LOTRO does not have instanced housing, it has a neighbourhood system like XIV does. The only difference is that when a neighbourhood fills up, a new one is generated, at the cost of less ability to decorate the way that you can in XIV (I have screenshots from my own house and guild house here). FFXI's housing is instanced, everyone gets one from the start, and mog houses outside your home city just act like an inn room that you can't decorate, as is SWTOR's.

Not to say I wouldn't like a system where a new neighbourhood is auto-generated, but I imagine the same thing would have to happen re: not having as many outdoor hooks to place items or as many houses in each ward to keep sizes down, as well as the fact that the devs would have to go back and revamp the entire system... which takes manpower to do. Everyone's already saying there's less and less to do, taking dev resources and time away from playable content would just make people more upset. They could work on it slowly but then it's "well it's taking too long" lmao.

And re: housing demos, Yoshida didn't want to do that or paying upkeep at all, but the players asked for auto-demos when demand for housing was starting to overtake the supply back in 2.x. He caved because the players asked, just like they did for lottos to ease not having to try to beat botters to placard click and the demand for it only grew. Maybe it will work for instanced housing eventually too.

demand took over because no one was wanting to spend 10 million gil for a small because if you recall, house pricing was based off server popularity. I remember when they allowed private housing, and it still didn't fill up because of how ridonkilous the pricing system was at time for a game being released and barely even a year old when they finally brought it out XD

Smalls weren't 10mil, even on populated servers like Balmung; the highest they went for a first class is 5mil. The larges were close to 100mil before any devaluation (god, remember that? That wouldn't do much now lol). The old housing price list is here. By then at least the legacy servers had that kind of money, and they were all mixed anyway with the FCs. Heck, my current house is in a FC-designated ward and it was only designated that in 6.1. But more FCs were able to raise gil and they were running into problems with dead and inactive FCs in houses where they hadn't been on long enough and it really was messing with the housing market.

I just remember the first demo going off on Christmas lol. There were houses saved by the person or someone in the FC walking in, but a lot just never came back after they quit. It sucks now, and I wish they'd allocate more wards for the more populous areas that are actively saying they want houses over the ones that just don't care (my understanding is JP is not as wanting of houses as we are in NA and EU on most servers?) but I figure it's not feasible to consolidate without pushing people into other wards where their preferred plot is already taken up. Doing that when they can't figure out people are loopholing to own multiple plots and stopping that from happening? How silly.

Yeah, I have heard people are willing to pay upwards of 350 million privately to others to purchase their house.

Here's the thread I was talking about. It's about how Yoshi said that FFXVI will not affect development of FFXIV, but well, here we are, with people calling this worst expansion so far, sometimes even worse than ARR.
Narrator's voice: People on this forum have called every single new expansion in existence the "worst one so far" since the game started. This place has been a negative echo chamber for the game's entire lifespan. The couple dozen or so bitter residents are meaningless compared to the hundreds of thousands of players enjoying the game.

Imagine implying everyone playing the game actually enjoys every single part of it

Never said that, but thanks for putting words in my mouth - great way to show you don't have an argument.

I don't think that it's true at all and it's really interesting that posters with 'recent' join dates who, by their own admission, only started playing the game fairly recently as well are the ones trying to rewrite the history of the forum to suit whatever point they're making at the time.
I've only seen a few point out they only started playing recently, and none of them are commenting about the past. Also remember that "Join Date" isn't the same as when you started playing, but rather when you chose to start using the forums. For example, my join date shows as Jan. 2022, but I actually started this account back sometime in the summer of 2015. People can "lurk" around the forums and read them for years without choosing to post. And it gets sad when you try to re-write history yourself by claiming other people are doing that just because you don't like the reality of it.

There is no reason to lose belongings. Apartments are essentially perpetual dumping grounds - whether you use it or not. The grace period is to make you pay money to do something about it.

I've lost my house to auto-demo. I wasn't playing the game. I lost my house. However, for me, it was a choice. I chose to stop playing during HW and while I was gone, they instituted house demolition.
