I personally I've gotten into the habit of checking a start date for posts that have sound like they might be of interest to me. 19 out of 20 times I'm right in guessing when it's a troll necro as opposed to someone having a legitimate comment/question to add.

I'm against an autolock. But people would create tons of new threads with the same topic anyways, as they do it already.

It would give the official moderators and SE even less to do. I expect this feature to be implemented very soon once enough moderators suggest it to the web team.

The issue with this is its almost the exact opposite of what they do on the jp side. They try to consolidate everything into one thread. So what here is generally considered a necro. There is generally considered good forum practice.

Here necros wouldn't be so bad if they were done constructively and properly. Not just some guy digging up a 4 year old thread and adding 3 words to it..

If I had feedback to offer on the gold saucer for example or triple triad in particular and there was a 2 year old thread on the subject I would be better to add my feedback there than just start a whole new thread.. unless of course triple triad had changed significantly since the earlier posts in that thread. Thus making them obsolete.

People should just stop replying to the necro-ed threads. Let the necromancers' efforts be in vain.
Don't forget to report as well.

For an auto lock the timer would have to be shorter to solve anything and generally if it is short we will have people bumping their own threads more frequently to stay relevant. Just trading one annoyance or another.

It would not be bad if threads were consolidated but the reality is people will feel their thread in a unique and wonderful idea / topic that it needs it is own space.

It's easy to see who the offenders are so it shouldn't have been difficult for them to get banned...

IMO it would be easier to remove the ability for them to necro than try to have the mods clean it up. I mean, if it can be automated, why have humans waste their time on it?

I don't think it'll do as much good as one thinks it will, the people who are doing this in a way that might seem trolly are going to be able to continue to operate as long as they are allowed to operate as an individual themselves (which would require a crack down on us all to much stricter standards than which people already complain about).

Mostly is, imo, just going to be annoying - if you had some large thread you put together or enjoyed, then getting locked so you just have to remake the thread, it demotes a general sense of history as well. Naturally sometimes the history is incorrect, but that's true for threads kept alive as well.

Seems like the desire is well meaning, sick of seeing stuff brought back for the sake of getting people's goats, but it misses by the fact that they are trying to get your goat- do you think they're going to suddenly stop because of some arbitrary timer? More chains on us all while not effectively abating the hazard in the first place, I think.

I would be more for just the GMs taking individual situations into account, and locking threads that should be locked on that individual basis.
