Anywhere between 45 days and six months I think would be fine. I think I'd probably land at like 3 months or 90 day spesronally.

I think 90 days without new posts would be a good length for autolock just as general practice.
Sadly, it's not going to stop thread necromancy. The necromancers will simply hunt for topics about to get locked. Better for SE to establish more specific rules about bumping posts that have had no recent discussion then enforce that.
I wonder if there's a way to create a "softlock" on posts so posters could only reply to one post a day that has had no current discussion in more than 30 days. Someone with a legitimate need to revive an old topic could do so without trolls flooding the front page with old topics.
lock the entire general discussion forums now and don't look back
Could we maybe get a warning that our thread is about to get locked?
I've got that "What's the story behind your name?" thread and it only gets attention in spurts and I'd really like it to stay open so I can keep reading about the thought everyone puts into their name.
Though, if I had to keep bumping it to keep it open that wouldn't be too good though, because this thread is the kind of thing where people only post in it once, so I'd have to keep bumping it during periods where the forums aren't getting new members (or members interested in this thread) just to try and keep it live.
I think there are a few other threads in unique positions like mine, so hopefully if there are any changes made they can take threads like this into considerations.
BTW here is that thread~

I agree. I've noticed a lot of old threads on the top pages. Just make new threads for old topics.
Why? Unless the thread is asking a technical question, it's less likely than not to have been resolved.
People wouldn't return to necro'ed threads beyond the initial bump post alone if there was nothing of relevance or openings for ongoing discussion in the original topic (or its tangents as the thread evolved).
Should we instead just be sure to open up new threads for each otherwise ongoing discussion just because another LL's silence or obfuscation left its posters disheartened for the time being? That would seem to go against the suggested practices for these forums...
I'll keep bumping up my own suggestion thread just to make sure that it doesn't get perma-locked. I NEED those Chocobo boots.
Please show support for chocobo boots to be added -> http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/323512-Suggestion-for-an-item-to-be-added-to-gold-saucer-Chocobo-Boots
Unhappy with how they implemented Mahjong? -> http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/381358-Mahjong-is-the-most-depressing-mini-game-you-ve-added-to-XIV
I'm torn, personally. I've posted on a lot of forums that have such a feature baked in. On the other hand, those forums don't have daily post limits.
Unfortunately these people necro threads that are less then a month old too...
