Regular Windows crashes to black screen when running FFXIV

I'm experiencing a regular complete system crash when running FFXIV.

This started occurring on either Sept 6, 2019 @3:50:41 pm PST or Sept 9, 2019 @ 9:28:26pm PST.
(I have 2 logs before this but they appear too far apart - this is when it became a regular event).

I'm not sure how to prep my system to get a useful log for you for this. Here is my specs:

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Eight-Core Processor 3.7 GHz
Asus Prime x470-Pro ATX AM4
32GB RAM DDR4-3000
Windows 10 Home
nVidia GeForce RTX 2080 (driver 9/5/2019 26.21.14.3630)

Windows Event View doesn't seem to have anything more useful than:

Critical 41:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Error 6008:
The previous system shutdown at 2:27:38 PM on ‎9/‎20/‎2019 was unexpected.

Which is kinda... yeah... I know that.

- and this pair of entries occurs at every error.

This time period might correlate with re-installing 'World of Warcraft'
- the dates on my folders for that app show

- WoW is NOT crashing for me.

But my first crash log appears in event viewer on 8/17, the second on 8/30, and by 9/9 they are occuring everytime I launch FFXIV, at some point during my play session, if not multiple times.

I installed Black Desert Online at or around 8/18/2019 2:22am if I am to believer folder datestamps - and launched it a total of 2-3 times.

- theory being that one of these game might be corrupting a file common to FFXIV?

To clarify, what do you mean by 'a complete system crash'? when this happens, does your entire PC shut down, or does only the game crash and the screen goes black?

Can you submit a Final Fantasy XIV system report? Simply go to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.'

Do you notice any patterns to this? Does it only happening certain areas or while doing certain actions?

What have you tried so far in order to alleviate the issue?

Entire PC shutdown but fans are still running. I have to hold my power button down for some seconds to restart.

I have 'presumed' I had a full crash. Are you saying it is possible my system is still running behind the black screen I see? Should I try something to see if I can access a system the next time this occurs?

It's hard to predict when. But it does seem to be more likely to happen in a crowd. It has gotten me in the middle of trial and eden-normal fights as well though.

Actions attempted thus far:
- removing the windows overlay
- removing all of nVidias overlays
- running in fullscreen only
- Setting PCI Express power options off (http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...ia-cards/page2)
- setting nVidia power management to max performance
- updating nVidia drivers to most current
- ensuring windows updates were all up to date
- scanning hard drives for bad sectors (none found).
- defragmenting drives (they were already good here anyway).
- checking CPU temp (never gets above 48)
- ensuring all fans running at turbo speed (over 700 rpm).
- examining case for blockages (it's a new system no dust in there anywhere).
- having nVidia GeForce Experience set my FFXIV graphics settings.
- turning off the FPS limit setting in FFXIV (it was at 144, once off I run at 150-153 when 'standing around').
- Trying to max performance settings and burden on GPU in every other 3D app I have to see if the problem was my system or just one game. Nothing crashes except FFXIV.
- ensuring my bios is NOT overclocked.

What I have NOT yet tried:
- reinstalling the game
- removing WoW and Black Desert (I plan to remove Black Desert anyway).
- removing the Twitch application, which I also added around the same time as WoW.

- These other games only come up in my mind because I put them on this new PC at a very close point in time to when this issue began. But I had all this and more on my old system.

The only other thing I can think of is my 'Blue Snowball' microphone was purchased at a point in time near to all of this as well.

- There is an overlay connected to 'ASUS Dual Intelligent Processors 5' - the app that tells me fan speed and CPU temp. I have as yet been unable to track down how to remove this overlay. It was present long before these errors began. Google searches told me the windows and nVidia overlays used to crash FFXIV for some people 4 or so years ago... which was why I removed them.

On the system report, it shows the game as being installed on the D drive. Could you try uninstalling and reinstalling the game on the C drive? I also advised to delete the locally saved content folder (My Documents > My Games > Final Fantasy XIV). Make sure to create a backup of this so you can replace it if it doesn't solve the issue.

Additionally, try doing a cleanboot. Open the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. . Restarting the PC with only what is used to run PC should get rid of the overlay you are unable to remove.

I can try moving it to the C, but it's always been on the D and this problem began only about a month ago.

Will try each of these suggestions though.

Of note: it is a full system crash. I got 2 of them tonight and noted that yes, my entire system goes down, not just a black screen covering my monitors.

Even when I reduce the graphics settings, FFXIV crashes.

Overwatch, WoW, ESO, BDO, GW2 - all on ultra settings, do fine.

Am noticing a number of threads which deal with issues like mine, facing people with nVidia RTX 2080 GPUs.

To change compatibility mode, right click on the exe file (Default location: C:\Program Files (x86)\SquareEnix\Final Fantasy XIV - A Realm Reborn\boot\ffxivboot.exe), right click it and select ‘Properties.’ Select the ‘Compatibility’ tab and select Windows 7.

Aside: opened case of PC to look at wiring today. Everything still good and clean. Moved GPU from PCI slot 2 to slot 1 on the theory that slot 2 was too close to bottom of case to get good ventilation.

Running 'zotac firestorm' on second monitor to try and live watch for what my temps and fans look like at the very moment of a crash. Last night CPU was at 77, looked away for a minute to game, and got a crash before I saw what it might show... (Maybe I should point a camera at it... oddly enough I have a Nest home camera so if this keeps up I will).

So that's an RTX 2080. NOT an RTX 2080 TI.
It wants 650 watts power, I have 750.

I notice my fans kick in for FFXIV much sooner than for other games. Last night I went into WoW and ESO and ran dungeons in both (which I fail at as I no longer play those regularly) with settings maxed out - while also keeping some graphics apps open on the second monitor.
- For WoW the fans kick in, but it doesn't crash and they don't run as hard. For ESO the fans didn't kick in until near the end of things and only lightly.

(Uninstalled BDO - was hoping that would be relevant, this all began a day or so after I first installed that game).

As I type this Zotac is telling me a CPU of 39, and GPU fans running at 29% speed... CPU clock 1515, mem clock 7000. I am not overclocking my system, to my knowledge, but will check that again as well).
- the CPU temp and GPU fan speeds go up when I load the game, to on average the 50-60 range for temp, and 40-60% for speed. Firestorm doesn't show the actual rotation-speed on those fans.

I note one of the other people with this issue mentions underclocking their GPU. Not sure how to do that but will look it up.

msi afterburner is the program i am using to underclock my card
