Even if they don't want to set a lockout for undergeared players, a *recommended* ilevel would be helpful, and/or perhaps a reminder similar to the one you get when your gear needs mending.

Certainly in ARR, the vendors seem badly arranged to me. You can't see at a glance if there is new gear that is worth buying for your character - you have to scroll through the list, look for ones that have better stats, see whether you are actually able to equip them (eg. level restrictions, DPS and tank gear mixed in together)....

Just grouping the gear by class-type would be better than the actual system of grouping by level - have categories for tank armour, medium armour (tanks + lancer), DPS, mages, and separate crafting and gathering. Then you'd just need to go to the correct category for the class you're equipping, and everything you could ever buy for that class would be there in the one list and sequenced by level, not split up across multiple menus and mixed with things you can't use.

(Also: the Recommended Gear button in the Character menu needs to stop suggesting non-tank armour for tanks. Usually it's slightly-higher-level-but-much-lower-defence DPS gear, but it actually recommended mage equipment for me the other day.... a sign that I need to buy new tank armour, sure, but still something is amiss with their system of judging what is actually the best equipment.)

Even that test seems to be not working as intended. I was still wearing my level-1 blouse and they let me through that check. Possibly had Lv8 gear in other slots and they just check an average number, but still. (And I continued wearing it right up until I got the Novice gear at Lv15 because I liked it and didn't seem to be having trouble beating enemies....)
