"Fatal DirectX Error 11000002" or computer lock-up

    Hi,

In the last month, I have been increasingly hit with this problem to the point where I can hardly play the game anymore. I had these problems in the past but never that long with this many crashes - back then it always disappeared by itself

One of the following will happen every few minutes now:
    - "Fatal DirectX Error 11000002"
    - The screen turns a random colour, the sound loops and I have to hard-reset the computer
    - The screen turns black and I have to reset the computer

SE Support told me to post my details here for the developers to help - a bit strange but ... well, I really need someone to fix this as right now I am paying for a game I cannot play.

    Things I tried:
    - made sure no other applications (browsers, chat, music players) are running in the background.
    - changed from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Creator's Edition (fresh install, no update)
    - used Nvidia Geforce Experience to set to recommended settings and then lower and lower.
    - uninstalled Geforce Experience.
    - tested the last 5 or 6 Nvidia drivers
    - changed from "windowed borderless" to "fullscreen
    - tried the pre-set graphics settings 'desktop - high'and 'desktop - standard' as well as 'laptop - high' and 'laptop - standard'
    - changed to DirectX 9

    Cheers,
    Zos

This (and other crashes) happen for quite a lot of people recently. I'm suffering from them myself and haven't found any solution yet (I've tried basically everything, from hardware diagnosis to completely reinstalling Windows - see also my last post in http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...-CRASHES/page2).

From what I've gathered it seems to be GPU/driver related for most people.

AMD actually has fixed something in their latest drivers after getting user reports of this error: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-arti...ase-Notes.aspx

So I wrote to Nvidia using http://surveys.nvidia.com/index.jsp?...f07694a40f8ac6 - I suggest you do the same, the more reports they get about this, the likelier they will actually look into it.

Square Enix is unfortunately not providing feedback to the issues submitted in this forum (aside from randomly moving them to "resolved" even if they are not).

Is there anything on your Windows' event logs?
Is your card overclocked? I've heard of issues with FFXIV and overclocking.

    Hope it gets fixed!

I had to disable windows 'game mode', turn off all overlays, and (I'm on an AMD card so I don't know if this will help you) turn on gpu scaling.

It is still a thing for me also and I am on GTX780. Why Square-Enix can't take this and let Nvidia know is beyond me.

At least for myself I can say: if I run the card in debug mode (= without the factory overclocking from ZOTAC) I still get the same amount of crashes. Also when I swap out my 1080 Ti with my old 980 Ti.

I've disabled AA for now and enabled Occlusion Culling which seems to help against this specific crash (I'm getting "An unexpected error has occured…" far more often than the on described in this thread and nothing I've tried has helped for that – I'm sure they are related though).

I'd love to know what exactly AMD has fixed in their latest driver, might give those of us on Nvidia a clue.

The ridiculous thing is I've just gotten the Stormblood Collector's Edition and three months of play time (should've run the benchmark first so I'd known of these crashes, but I ran the game fine 1 1/2 years ago). Square Enix doesn't even seem to care about this even though quite a lot of people suffer from it. :/

I rather abruptly started getting "An expected error has occurred" with extreme frequency today, and I really don't understand why.

I've tried a ton of different suggestions to no avail, so I think I'm just going to stick with DX 9 until it gets resolved.

    Thank you for the suggestions.

The Windows event logs do not show anything unusual here and I decided against overclocking my system, it used to run nicely with full details until recently.

Will try the idea with disabling the game mode next, maybe it helps.

I seem to have fixed this issue for me. After checking the GPU statistics in Afterburner I noticed that my card has been voltage-bound quite a few times. So I unlocked the voltage slider and set it to 100% (if you have decent cooling this won't hurt but I'd still check the temperatures after doing that).

Two effects: One, my card boosts even higher (up to 2075MHz (2025MHz before), which is pretty high for a 1080 Ti). Second, it's actually cooler than with lower voltage. I can't really explain it myself, but there are posts on hardware forums describing why too low voltage will actually run the card hotter when it's overclocked.

I've run the Stormblood benchmark for 6 hours straight now at the highest settings and had zero crashes – I'd normally crash after 10 to 15 minutes in that.

I guess the issue here is that ZOTAC put such a high clock offset on my card that the voltage is too low when boosting – resulting in this crash. I haven't tested with my old 980 Ti yet, but I'm guessing it would have the same effect there. Maybe some kind of bug in the recent Nvidia drivers that cause the cards to try and go beyond the voltage limit causing a crash or something.

So if you want to, try that too. You have to unlock the voltage slider and the voltage monitoring in the Afterburner settings before you can change the value.

I don't yet know if this also fixes the other crash I've been experiencing (the one which lists the game's .exe over and over) but I'm crossing my fingers.

I'm currently on driver 382.53 which has been very stable for me in other games.
