Maybe I'm misunderstanding this comment but, if it's only you, that's not a community. That's just you. Alone. Solo. Not a community. And if you're implying that its the player themselves who "make the community", that's true for the entire community. If you're a great personable person and the rest of the community is antisocial, being you isn't going to matter. Point is, the exclusion of the rest of the world, like what we had in XI and playing with people from EVERYWHERE is not in this iteration of the FF MMO. And in my honest opinion THAT is what also keeps this game from feeling like a whole community.

with a lack of gameplay content that can involve many members of the community and the way battle content gets invalidated, fc activities often split apart into cliques and getting communication among people is difficult unless you have voice chat, which this game doesn't have on its own.

My ffxiv story began when CoP release I started out as a red mage cuz at that point I've never seen one before. This was back in 2006 I think. Took about 2 1/2 months to get to lvl22, didn't get very far, then my pc just burned out and my adventure in Xi stopped there until the year 14 was re released. I thought it would be a good idea to become more aquanted with mmo's before immersing myself in another. With all the new updates and expidited progression I reached lvl35 in a weekend. My thought at the time was man things have changed. My time with Xi was limited while my time with 14 is on going. I'll never forget those frustrating times trying to lvl up how painful it was and how awesome it was.

    This is my story-Tides

If you sit around waiting for "community" to suddenly happen, guess what? You're going to be sorely disappointed. You have a right to complain about lack of "community" only to the extent you, yourself, are willing to contribute.

That first "community" in that Other Game didn't arrive full blown from the mind of Cid. It required dedicated people to put it into place. If you, yourself, are not willing to do that, why would anyone else?

tldr; Work towards the community you'd like to see rather than complaining about the community you don't see.

I had a similar experience to our friend here where someone eventually helped me out, but I would admit it was around the time I hit level 8 when I joined another newer player, however knowing where to go and what to do at least to the extent of getting us to the dunes. I still remember playing with this monk and following him around, getting to my first 6 man party (omg there was a paladin in it, it looked so cool)...and eventually making my way to the dunes to die horrifically over and over. So I didn't have a white knight but I did meet another sort of like me. I'm sure if you made it to the dunes though things would have been different, I'm sorry you didn't :/

My biggest anger towards FFXI though was finding out thief didn't get two daggers. You had to ninja sub. That made me so sad because I wanted to be like Jaffar from FE and other assassins like him.

How do you think FCs and LSs are made? People make them so there can be a social aspect. That's the way a community is made. It has nothing to do with the game.

I'd rather join in on a community at my own whim rather than be FORCED.. or else.

This in my opinion at least, is unture to a fair extent. Yes a community within itself is an abstract concept but a video game can greatly influence the ability and stability of building a community or not. The whole argument with FFXI in general, is due to its difficulty and need for others, helped create a large community, both as a whole and with LS/FC.

It's difficult to build something that isn't needed in the game, and that the game itself actually discourages with it's current mechanics. FFXIV as it stands encentivises groups of 8 any more and your leaving people out, your punished for completing content and wanting to go back and help others due to constant lock-outs.

People build communities, but they need to have something to build around.

Not from Savage, from Normal. The idea being those who want story get only that, while raiders don't have to farm an easier difficulty they would otherwise avoid. I know plenty of raiders who prefer being surprised by mechanics, which having to do a normal mode first somewhat negates.

Actually, you do that in many games outside the Final Fantasy franchise X)

The context of my point, however, was that it could take days or weeks before reaching the next story beat. I'm not disparaging that quality in FFXI, I was merely offering my view on the topic of discussion. I do like to make people laugh/scratch their heads though, so I'm glad you found it funny.
