DRK ability name request/question. (for mod)

I would really appreciated if Plunge would be renamed Plunge Cut, I have this argument all the time with FC members where in Japanese the skill is named Plunge Cut and in English it is only named Plunge.

It annoys me because of this reason ingame your character leaps (plunges) into the monster, however a secondary animation takes place where he cuts the monster downward, Plunge Cut makes more sense to me then Plunge for the purpose of this skill thoughts?.

I know this may seem stupid for a lore post but it bothers me enough to warrant posting.

You might have a better chance at a response if you posted this in Localization, although I think the mods between the two forums are mostly shared.

i find plunge rolls of the tongue easier. the "cut" part is somewhat redundant, as your using a greatsword...what else are you going to do with it?

Agreed, the "cut" is definitely redundant. When you're plunging your sword into someone/something, you're not just poking them.

I think a lot of the awkwardness comes from the connotations usually attached to plunge.

The Japanese attack name is just Plunging Cut in English. There, "plunging" is an adjective describing the cut - the cut is the subject. In English, we just have Plunge which itself becomes the verb. As others have said, if you plunge you plunge. But in Japanese, you cut - plunging...ly... I agree that shift is a little weird. When not used as a figurative adjective, plunges themselves usually involve water (plunger; plumbing, etc. - coming from the French "to dive" by way of the Latin "to cast a leaded line") unless the plunge is what's being done to something like a blade (to PLUNGE a sword INTO someone; whereby the blade is acting like a person jumping into water). Plunge seems inadequate to some, Plunging Cut seems redundant to some.

I have no opinion, I can just see where this can be awkward in several ways (or none) depending on who's analyzing it.

Plunge cuts are a woodworking term for cutting slots into the material without drilling any holes. It's not inaccurate to call what happens a "plunge cut", but it's pretty awkward and obscure to use that phrasing instead of something snappier.

edit: Definitely a localization thing that should be completely different from the JP version.

I believe Anonymoose has the right of this. I don't speak Japanese, but it's quite likely that the Japanese name for the ability is an adverb plus verb phrase. Meanwhile, the English localization uses a word that is already a verb with certain connotations. In our case, plunge can mean diving into something (I plunge headlong into battle), and it can also mean stabbing something (I plunge my sword into his torso). The English translation saves on space by using a single word whose dual meaning is appropriate in context where the Japanese language doesn't have a word with that precise dual meaning.

This seems like an extremely petty complaint.

Yes, you jump and cut. But the cut is downward, so you and your sword are plunging down on your enemy.

Technically, cut is even a misnomer, since that implies lacerating flesh by movement of a blade across the skin. What you're actually doing is trying to cleave your enemy in two, so if you want an absolutely perfect literal description of what the move does it should be "Plunge Cleave." (Naturally you can't actually cleave anything in twain because MMO mechanics, but if you're going to be pedantic like this there you have it.)

Even more problematic, "cleave" already has an established definition in MMO (and tabletop) circles. Try calling it Plunge Cleave and people will expect it to be AOE.

And yet, we have that oh so glorious skill called "Fell Cleave"...
