Not forgetting that a lot of crafters also do gathering, and it'd be a pain in the rear-end to have to run from a city to a grade 4 area, then run between one node and another for ages. Chocobos shortens the gathering process significantly, in fact it'd be fair to say gatherers will benefit the most from chocobos.
