An Idea For The Future (Chocobos)

With riding Chobos hastily on the horizon I've come up with an idea for a possible gathering/crafting class and job involving our favorite fluffy yellow friends:

Please click 'like' on this thread if you like the ideas.

I apologise for the very long posts I've made in this thread, but in order to truly explain the scope of the ideas I'd come up with I needed to add a lot of explaination to them so people could get an idea of what it would look like and how it would operate.

Chocobo Breeder

A chocobo breeder would be a special 'crafting' class that operates more on a real-time basis. They would specialise in the raising and training of different kinds of chocobo to suit their needs, or the needs of a friend from their linkshell, or to sell the chocobo at the market wards or upcoming auction house to someone who wants a certain kind of chocobo.

Chocobos could be raised in a variety of different ways. the crafter could concentrate on increasing the chocobos speed and stamina, making it a specialised riding chocobo, or work on it's ability to fight, which in turn could be used as a pet for future pet-based battle classes and jobs.

Each chocobo breeder would be given stables, these would operate in an instance seperate from the gaming world as having enough stables for each player all in one or three cities would be impossible. Inside the stables would be an incubator for hatching any chocobo eggs you manage to aquire, a feeding machine to put in chocobo food such as gysahl greens and the stables themselves which each chocobo would stand in.
When interacting with a chocobo in the stables you'd be given multiple options. One would simply be to interact with it in a friendly way such as patting it on the head or perhaps combing it's feathers. Another would be to transport you and that particular chocobo to a specific training ground. These training grounds would also be instanced so as not to clog up certain areas of the world.

Different training grounds could include a racetrack, which you could use to ride your chocobo around, or let it run around itself, to increase certain stats such as speed, vitality or endurance. This would in turn make the chocobo faster at running and allow it to sprint for longer periods of time, as well as increase it's health pool, making it very good as a riding chocobo.

Another traiing ground could be for mock battles. The chocobo would proceed in attacking training dummies or weak monsters to increase it's strength, defence and dexterity, making it more specialised as a fighting chocobo, which could then be used as a pet for any kind of 'beast master' class/job the game may add.

However as certain stats increase, other stats may decrease, so it would be impossible to make a chocobo that is both excellent at riding and excellent at fighting, as that would cause players to only ever want to purchase those kinds of chocobos and make it more difficult for people just starting in chocobo breeding from making a sale.

Your classes XP would be earned for pretty much anything you do during your time in the chocobo stables and it's training grounds, and as your level in the class increases, so does the stat gain for your chocobos as you train them, allowing you to train new chocobos faster.

Also as your level increases you'd be able to breed special kinds of chocobo, such as one of varying colour, size, shape or appearance, perhaps even eventually allowing a special skill when reaching a certain level that could be used at the incubator when inserting an egg that let's you customise the chocobos appearance for when it hatches, allowing your chocobo to be more personalised.

You could also summon one of your retainers into the chocobo stable so that they could look after them whilst you're out in the world doing leve's, dungeons, gathering or whatever it is you want to do. This way you wouldn't be forced to log on every day just to make sure your chocobos are ok.

Another little thing that could be added is that chocobos could become ill, at this point when you interact with the chocobo you'd be given the option to attempt to cure it of it's illness.
This would initialise what we all currently know as the 'crafting system' but instead of standard synthesis, rapid synthesis and carefull synthesis we'd get something like 'standard dosage, heavy dosage and light dosage' as you give your chocobo medicine. Each time you make an attempt the progress bar would fill a certain percentage dependant on how successfull you were, and instead of durability you would have 'health'. If the health numbers drop to 0 before progress reaches 100% your chocobo remains ill, and you would have to use more medicine to try and cure it, if you hit 100% the chocobo is cured of it's illness, also giving the possibility that it may gain a small amount of a certain stat as a reward if the quality of doctoring is high, much like creating a high quality synthesis.

Another addition would be the ability for other crafts such as armourer, blacksmith, leatherworker and weaver to create armour, harnesses and other usefull items for your chocobo, each giving certain stats to compliment what the chocobo already has. For instance armour would obviously increase it's defence for use in fighting, as well as strength to increase the damage of it's attacks. A harness would give it bonus stats in speed or endurance, making it better at riding. Or you could just dress it up in funny/awesome/cute clothes to make it look good. Perhaps blacksmith could make a beak-guard, a metal shield to cover the chocobos beak with maybe small spikes or things attached which would essentially be used as the chocobos weapon when battling monsters, also increasing it's attack power.

To go with this, harvesting, botany and perhaps fishing would need to have chocobo food included into it's list of possible gathered materials, such as different types of greens. Culinary could then maybe turn those into a specialised chocobo meal that could have certain special traits to them, like increasing the chocobos happiness or drastically decreasing it's level of hunger.
This would also mean chocobos could be given special personality traits, such as obediant, rebellious, carefree etc. that would make it act differently. A rebellious battle chocobo may ignore the players commands when told to attack or use a battle skill, a carefree could perhaps wander off for a little bit whilst it's following you around, and obviously an obediant one would be your faithfull pet, doing everything you say.
Personality traits would be decided by what food you feed a chocobo whilst raising it, as well as how much attention you give it or how well you look after it. If it becomes ill and you ignore it for too long it would become rebellious, likewise if you fawned over it too much it would become carefree.

Another instanced area the chocobo stables could include would be a small farming area, like a greenhouse, where you would be able to grow specific chocobo food for your chocobos, so you aren't forced to go out and find harvesting spots in the hope of getting food. At the same time this could be considered a food storage area so that when you leave your stable on automated with the retainer, that's an ample supply of food for the retainer to feed them should you be away from the game for certain periods of time.

Also including a 'holiday' mode would probably help many players, as if you were on holiday and unable to attend to your chocobos there'd be nothing that could be done about it. In that case you'd set your stable on holiday mode before you leave, which would but your stable into a suspended state. The chocobos inside wouldn't age or become ill, nor use up food, and you can de-activate holiday mode when you come back to the game.

You would also gain a chocobo stable NPC linkpearl when becoming a chocobo breeder, this would be used in conjunction with your retainer so that when you click on it (the same way as you use other linkpearls) your retainer would give you information regarding the current state of your chocobos, such as "Everything is fine" or "[insert chocobo name] has become ill", "We're running low on [insert food]" and other such things, which wil allow you to know if you need to spend time at your stables without having to go to a city and look for yourself.

Also you'd be able to invite friends, linkshell members or possible purchasers into your stable simply by them following you into the transition area whilst in a party with you, so they could look at your chocobos first-hand and see what stats they have or which one they'd be interesting in having/buying.

As your level increases also you could perhaps purchase bigger stables or better equipment to better care for, raise and train your chocobos. Items in the stables could perhaps be given ranks like other classes that may lose durability when used and require repair from the relevant crafting class that makes them, as well as reducing the stats they give to the breeder if it is not of a relevant rank (E.G/ Level 30 Feeding Trough with +10 reduction to hunger, being used by a Level 10 Breeder, would not give the full +10 reduction) this allows for a multitude of different chocobo items of varying levels and appearances, so that you feel you are progressing as a breeder each time you upgrade your stables equipment, as well as your own DoH/DoL clothing.
-----------------------------

That is all I'm able to think up of so far, post your opinions, comments and ideas

To compliment the Chocobo Breeder class, here is an idea for a job to go with it:

Chocobo Hunter

A Chocobo hunter would operate much like a gathering class. Your main-hand would be a baiting glove, and the off-hand a small incubator. Whilst running around in the world you could come acrossa chocobo wandering around/pecking at the ground/hiding in a bush. When choosing the 'capture' option it would enter into the hot & cold system other gathering class have. Your character would hold out it's hand with possibly some bait in it such as greens. Then you would choose a point on the rotating bar/circle/whatever as you attempt to bait the chocobo to you. This would result in "The chocobo is uncertain" meaning you're far from convincing it, "The chocobo is curious" meaning you're getting closer, and "The chocobo wants to follow you" meaning you're succesfull in capturing it. When this happens you are then given a choice whether to take the chocobo back to your stable manually, in which point you climb on it and ride it like any other riding chocobo, or you can summon your retainer to teleport it back to the stable for you, or you can release it back into the wild if you were only trying to capture it to gain XP and increase your hunters level. Dismounting from a wild chocobo before getting it back to the stable would cause it to run away however. (Just like in Final Fantasy VII )

Capturing wild chocobos could have a multitude of advantages to it. A wild chocobo may have developed special abilities you cannot train it with using chocobo breeder, or it may have enhanced stats that would take a lot of time to aquire as a breeder. The higher the level of area, the better the chocobo will be, but the harder it will be to bait, thus keeping with the Grade 1, 2, 3 & 4 operation the game currently uses. So a chocobo found in Central Black Shroud would only be slightly better if not at all from a regular chocobo you can breed in the stables, where as capturing one in Coerthas could reward you with quite an amazing chocobo with a multitude of special fighting/battling/social abilities.

The secondary gathering for this would be to harvest chocobo eggs from any nests you may come across. Simply click the 'gather' option and your character attempts to gather eggs from the nest. You also have the chance of gaining other items such as food, feathers, straw, branches etc. Gathered eggs would have noticebly different appearances in their icons. A yellow egg will probably hatch a normal yellow chocobo, and would be more common to aquire in grade 1 areas, a black egg could hatch into a black chocobo, but would be only be able to harvest in high grade areas such as Southern Black Shroud, and so on. Each zone in the game (Thanalan, Black Shroud, La Noscea, Coerthas etc.) could more commonly be associated with certain colours or types of chocobos, much the same as botany has with dye at the moment, so if you wanted a red or white chocobo egg you'd try grade 2 or 3 Thanalan, black and green eggs would be more common to Black shroud, and so on. Also it'd be possible to aquire High Quality chocobo eggs that may hatch into a more advanced chocobo with already aquired skills or stats.

As you level up you'd gain abilities to sense nearby chocobos just like other gathering classes, gaining the II's and III's versions of these as your hunter level increases, as well as have more attempts to capture higher grade chocobos.

Adaption to Chocobo Breeder

Another possible thing to add to chocobos would be a 'social' training ground. In this area your chocobo would have to navigate mazes or such and find moogles within the maze that would give it hints as to how to get out. This would increase the chocobos intellect and social stats.
Chocobos high in these stats would have a special use. You would be able to walk around cities/areas with it and use it as a sort of 'bargaining friend' allowing you to haggle with vendors using the 'synthesis window' in an attempt to buy something at a cheaper price, or perhaps use it on any NPC of your choice which could result in the NPC giving you items or quests. When using it on a normal NPC your 'synthesis window' would pop up with the options "Funny" "Cute" and "Intimidate", when you make a choice your chocobo would do an action to go with the option which would result in increasing your progress bar by a percentage, depending on success. At 100% the NPC would offer something to you, but if your Social percentage drops to 0 you fail the negotiation and cannot haggle with that NPC for another 12 hours (To go with the leve's reset timer after 1.19). you could also aquire a High Quality result if your 'Haggle' counter is high enough, resulting in better items or a better quest.

Incubating eggs could also operate on a similar method, using options such as "Warm", "Hot" and "Very hot" to increase your progress bar. Failure would result in the egg going to waste, where as if your Incubation Quality is high enough, could result in a High Quality Chocobo with better stats or abilities.

Leve

A Chocobo Breeder leve would be something pretty simple like hatching leve aquired eggs at your stables. Rewards would range from food and eggs to possibly tools and equipment.

A Chocobo Hunter leve would be to go out and capture chocobos, much like how mining leves are to go and mine mining spots, botany leves have you logging trees etc.

Extra Adaption To Chocobo Breeder

Obviously to go along with simply incubating eggs a breeder would be able to breed together two of their stabled chocobos. This would be done in very much the same way as Final Fantasy VII, where you give the female chocobo a nut, choose the male chocobo to breed with, and then come back 24 hours to see the result.
Results would differ depending on which chocobos you breed together, their colours, and their likes and dislikes of each other. In each chocobos attributes window you would be provided with information as to it's stats, skills, favorite food, and which of the other chocobos in your stable they like and dislike.
Breeding two chocobos together that dislike each other could wield little or no reward at all, where as breeding two that do like each other could give better results or even extremely special results if you're lucky.

The likes and dislikes for each chocobo could be altered by moving them closer together in the stable, the longer they're pens are next to each other, the more they begin to like each other, which you would use as a means to get better results if you were to breed them together.

Breeding two chocobos of different types together could result in bad results, for instance a riding chocobo bred with a battle chocobo could result in just a basic yellow chocobo egg with nothing special to it. However breeding two riding chocobos together could result in a specialised riding chocobo egg that when hatched, gave you a new chocobo that already had stats in speed and endurance.

Also to go with this breeding two chocobos of the same colour together would result in an egg of the same colour, however mixing colours could result in an egg of a different colour (E.g White & red chocobo results in pink chocobo egg), possibly even allowing you to obtain special coloured chocobos that are unobtainable by any other means.

This system would allow players a whole range of customisability with their breeding, letting them decide what colour and type they want from their chocobo, possibly spending days, weeks or even months mixing and matching chocobos together to get the one super special chocobo with the colour, stats and abilities they always wanted. (Golden riding chocobo with infinite sprint? )

It would also benefit them in other ways. Spending a lot of time breeding the right chocobos together would allow them to create specialised high level chocobos that are of high demand in the market/auction house and sell for a high price, so a Level 50 Beast-Master would want to spend his hard earned gil on a chocobo pet that was made with tender loving care and excells in combat, rather than one that was made five minutes ago and has nothing special about it at all.

Ultimately this would result in Square Enix not needing to think about adding in the 'next level of mounts' that run faster than the last ones, as the running speed of each riding chocobo would be determined by the stats it obtained from it's breeder as well as the armour/harnesses it was wearing.

This in turn would allow Square Enix to put in fun special events such as chocobo races that players could take part in and win trophies and rewards for. Many player would dedicate a lot of time trying to breed the best racing chocobo they could to take part in the races that could be held as a special monthly/6 monthly/yearly event.

If it rewarded in trophies these could maybe be kept in a special light-up cabinet in your stable so you could show it off to your friends

Chocobo Clothing Ideas

To add to the customisability of the colour and type of your chocobo, special armour, harnesses and clothes could be incorporated into it that you can equip to make your chocobo look more unique.

Armour would be composed of plating and straps much like we saw in pictures in FFXI and what the upcoming chocobos would appear to possess in 1.19. To add to this it would be good to be able to colour that armour simply for cosmetic and style.

Harnesses also could run on the same system, letting you have your own funky looking seat to sit on whilst you dash across Eorzea on your feathery friend.

Clothing could be added perhaps just for cosmetic or comedy, such as putting a silly pointy wizard hat on your chocobos head or dressing it in a suit, or perhaps drapes to give it a more elegant look.

Other ideas to this could be elemental based armour. With the induction of materia into our crafting, we could add elemental traits to a chocobos armour that would cause a certain percentage of it's attack to be of a particular element, such as fire or wind, allowing the battle chocobos to excell at fighting particular enemies. These types of armour could even include special effects such as flames, lights, glows, sparks or other elemental shinyness, making your chocobo look quite bad-ass.

Another cosmetic option would be the ability to attach a flag to your chocobos harness that has your linkshells logo on it. When riding in a group with other linkshell members this would give your party that extra-awesome appaearance, as to onlookers you'll look like a battalion of soldiers riding valiantly into battle.

This would also mean that future events could reward players with chocobo clothing and equipment, as well as ones for your character, which would add to the fun. Imagine at christmas riding around in the 'dream' outfit whilst your chocobo has a funny santa hat on, a white beard tied to his beak, red clothes with white fluff across his wings, and bells, tinsel and mistletoe hanging from the storage bags and harness, jingling along merrily at christmas.

Chocobo Stable Size/Functionality

Balancing the amount of pens a stable has could be difficult. In Final Fantasy VII I often found myself juggling the pens to finally make a golden chocobo. So I thought of this:

Initially when starting as a breeder your stable has 6 pens. I thought 6 would be conveniant to start with as it'd give you 4 spaces to use to house chocobos you wish to breed and 2 to house the ones you've aquired through breeding.

As you get better and want to move on to more advanced breeding you could pay a set fee to add 2 extra pens to your stable, up to a maximum of 12. This gives an ample supply of pens so that people who want to breed a variety of chocobos have plenty of room, and people who want to specialise in particular kinds of chocobos have plenty of space to house the ones they need to breed together in order to get that one exceptional chocobo.

Along with space, the stable would possess various tools that could alter the personality, stat gain or other aspects of your chocobo, such as a feeding trough that can be upgraded through crafting (used when feeding chocobos), an incubator (to hatch chocobo eggs), a hay/straw stack to replace bedding in the pens (which would alter the personality or mood of the chocobo), a heater (a warm chocobo is a happy chocobo), and possibly a music box to play music of your choice as you may spend a lot of time in the stables and may not want to keep listening to the same tune over and over again (this could also serve a comedy purpose as putting on a tune one of your chocobos likes could cause it to start dancing (wark wark! ))

Along with these usable functions the stable could possess cosmetic items too, such as a cabinet to store trophies and awards aquired through competing in chocobo-related events, as well as desks, chairs, lights, a giant moogle plushie, and other fun stuff that makes your stable look less generic and more personalised. Some usable and cosmetic items could be created through various crafts such as blacksmithing, carpentry, weaving etc. where as some special ones could also be earned as rewards for taking part in events, which would more than convince more players to take part in the events to gain the rewards and make their stable look awesome.
