    Ninjutsu :"Huton" - "Futon"

Not so much a "bug" as "error". And yes, it's one of those posts.

Starting the Ninja quests, I was excited that A) I'm a frackin' ninja and B) I could actually read the kanji and names used for the mudras and jutsus.

A quick explanation (not for the Square boffins, but other readers unfamiliar with this): The "~ton" jutsus are named for their respective element as well as the alternate reading of the Japanese kanji (and with respect, Chinese reading of said kanji). Eg. The "Ka" in "Katon" is "Fire", while the "Sui" in "Suiton" is "Water". I was relishing at "Doton" ("Earth") when I hit "Huton" and my jimmmies instantly rustled.

The kanji for "Wind" is 風 ("Kaze"), with the alternate reading being "Fu". The Japanese alphabet consists of... a lot... of characters, the majority of which are consonants followed by a, i, u, e, and o. "Fu" belongs to the H-family (ha, hi, fu, he, ho (there are a few little changes like that throughout the language). Things like using "Hu" instead of "Fu" (or cutting the u's out of Toukyou) are common when romanizing Japanese, but I die a little on the inside every time I use this crucial skill. And on top of that, I'm one of those crazy grammar people (which you can tell by the length of this post). My Japanese teacher actually laughed at it, but agreed that it's a common mistake.

It's not a game-breaking thing and I'm probably one of three people bothered by it, but it would bug me endlessly if I didn't point it out. Keep, change. It's your choice.

It just hurts my soul a bit...

This sounds like a localization issue, so it would probably be best to post it in the localization forum. Here.

They probably used Huton simply because calling your Skillspeed buff a combination of a bed and couch is a bit silly :P

    Futons for all!

That said, should be noted "Huton" was the name of the Wind Ninjutsu in XI, and remains so today... so either no one fluent in Japanese noticed or they aren't going to change this, because futons are something entirely different in NA/EU than it would appear to be in the JP language, and as someone who I hope can logically see Many > Few, they'll probably keep this Huton so people don't question why they're casting couchbed to speed up.

Yeah... As others have pointed out, I think the English-speaking player base would have managed to make "futon" even more soul-crushing with furniture jokes/macros/japery.

10 posts per page is only the default setting; it is bad, and you should feel bad if you haven't changed it.

As the above user mentioned, please re-submit this concern to our Localization Forum so that it can be properly addressed.

    Thank you!
