Name Change Item Request

I wasn't sure if this was the right section of the forums to post this in, but the main reason I posted it here was because I wanted it to get the most views and responses possible. If a Moderator feels it is in the wrong section, please feel free to move it to the correct section.

Anyways, I have recently come to the decision that this game needs a new item to go right along with the Fantasia's that are currently being sold in the Mog Station. This additional item is the "Name Change" Item that would allow you to alter the name of your character.

There are two primary reasons I suggest this. First is because some players when they first create their character choose a name associated with one gender, and then when they decide to use a Fantasia, are loathe to be willing to change genders because they would be stuck with a wrongly gendered name.

The second more prominent reason (at least for me) is when someone chooses a specific foreign name and they manage to spell it wrongly. For example my main characters name is Kikiyo Cledwin. However the correct way to spell the name I selected is Kikyo or more properly Kikyō. In otherwords I have been spelling it wrong all this time, and would be very appreciative of a means to change the name to the proper spelling.

Unfortunately the only way to do this at the current time is to either start with a name that is so vulgar that a G.M. has to come in and change the name for you because someone reported you (not an option for me, nor something I would recommend for anyone else). Or to switch servers to a server where someone else has the exact same name as your character (again a highly unlikely scenario in my case).

They can do a package deal as well for it with the Fantasia, I mean seeing all the guys running around with female names or vice versa these days is quite funny :P

But heck I wouldn't mind a name change ability as well, mainly because almost every other mmo has it as an option, plus I rolled my character and than was like oh snap I should just stick to using the same name from each game I have played through the years...oh well on my part.

I agree, a Fantasia + Name Change Package Deal would be awesome. It could also be done at a slight discount to either of their prices individually.

Just gonna head this off:

No, getting to change your character's name does not encourage irresponsible behavior. Jerks will be jerks. Name changes would have virtually no impact on the community. It never has, in the vast multitude of online games that allow this kind of thing (or are just more friendly to alt characters).


Anyway yeah. The prospect of a "Namingway Card" (to give it the FF-flavor) has come up here a few times. I'd kinda like to see it as well, even if it's just on behalf of the huge Roegadyn dudes and such I see with names that match like, the female lalafell naming conventions. On my main, here, I can only be a female seeker of the sun miqo'te, thanks to those. Not saying I actually want to change it, but to have the option would still be nice.

I'd also kinda like them to lift the purchasing limits on Phials of Fantasia, but that's only tangentially related to this.

And yes, as long as they can provide a means to see previously used names (not unlike Steam) there pretty much is no point in trying to hide behind a "new" screen name. Friend lists/blacklists already track by some hidden character ID, not name (someone could change to a different server, causing the name to show up as (Deleted), come back with a forced name change, and that same spot in your friends list will show that new name).

I started out as a Seeker and had spent a good month coming up with a name I felt was appropriate to naming conventions and that would also be nicely mispronounced when people inevitably didn't follow the conventions. After much consideration I decided to switch to Moon Keeper back in September and I've grown so attached to her now that I don't think I could ever change her. This name still haunts me though. I just want to remove my apostrophe Square-Enix. Please think of the racial names!

This is awesome to hear. Is there a dev quote regarding it? It's kinda plain to see that a lot of systems in this game are jury-rigged to cover limitations on the structure that came with 1.0 (or otherwise, weird quirks thanks to PS3/4 functionality) and for the most part it's not too big a deal, but unlimited quantities to character service purchases would be a most appreciated luxury -- plus, y'know, money in SE's pocket.

I hear this. I like my character's name, really, but say I wanted to experience life as a lalafell for a few weeks! Which could very well end up being permanent, or not. They made up a pretty neat in-universe explanation for naming conventions, and it's fun to stick to it; less so to change your mind about looks but wind up with a glaringly unfitting name.

You'll be happy to know that Yoshida came to that decision a long time ago already, back when it was decided to make Fantasia an unlimited supply for everyone. He said that he feels players who change race should be able to adjust their name, should they want to keep following the naming conventions of the new race they are choosing. The name change feature is currently in SE's To-Do list.
