Because no one wants to get to rank 50 GLA with their cool looking GLA armour just to see some stupid little taru rank 1 CON walk past wearing it too. It's stupid.

Well maybe you love rules, but some people like to just enjoy wearing what they want.
If the accomplishment of getting to R50 wasn't enough for you, and nor was obtaining those pieces of equipment (which the R1 lalafell would need to obtain as well), then maybe there's something more wrong with the game than the Optimal Rank system.
1 - What others wears have no effect on your actual gameplay. Really, I can't see a problem in the fact that someone out there is *gasp* using a Vintage Haubergeon on their lower level classes. What a crime against humanity.
2 - if he has that gear it most likely means that he worked for it, so even that kind of argument is void.
Not really. A little coin or hand me down, and it's yours, and it ruins the economy as well, as you have no reusability.1 - What others wears have no effect on your actual gameplay. It's a decently bad system in the long run. Nice idea, badly thought out. It needs to feel so bad , there is no way a lvl 1 would ever want to wear that lvl 50 for example.
There will always be people handing out itens / giving to their subs / etc and the effect of that practice on the economy is the same regardless of the player receiving actually being able to use the item or not.Not really. The main point of the optimal rank / class system is to make it easier to change class on the fly (IE, one of the selling points of XIV) and restraining this ability IS a bad thing.
The dev team should be striving to increase the usability of that system with things like saving gear and ability sets and implementing at least a few endgame items with "suits:all" property (of course not as good as the more specialized ones), instead of gimping that system with tons of restricted items that will require the player to lose even more inventory space to hold all his gear if he happens to play on more than one class (AKA, pretty much everyone).
I personally wouldn't mind having a main, class and rank restricted set for my Thaumaturge and a secondary, high level "suits:all" equipment for my other classes in case I need to change class for whatever reason, instead of having a completely different set for every class and rank I may be leveling. Preventing that kind of annoyance is another advantage of the optimal class / rank system.
Basically make it more SP type game, that you play for 60hrs and then sell it to gamestop. There will always be people handing out itens / giving to their subs / etc and the effect of that practice on the economy is the same regardless of the player receiving actually being able to use the item or not.

Again, decent idea, badly thought out. It has no longevity and sustainability.
No, what's stupid is what you just posted. Why do you care what some level one LALAFELL is wearing when it's optimal rank 50. If the character isn't rank 50 it's not functioning properly.
Between people unable to wear optimal rank gear, build a character to fulfill a role on their own without choosing a class from a list, and the whole progression/battle issues you'd think that most of the people playing this game are mentally retarded.
You missed my point. I'm not trying to tell people how to play, or what to wear. But the whole idea that you worked towards the goal of being able to wear awesome looking gear, just to find that everyone else can wear it regardless of rank or class, kinda takes the unique feel from the armour and also make the goal of getting to the point where you can wear that cool armour is void. No, what's stupid is what you just posted. I do like the optimal rank system as well as the required system, but if anything, you shouldn't be able to wear it 5 ranks above or below the optimal, maybe? Something should be changed about it, because no armour/gear is unique if any random person can wear it.
Also any moron can buy gil from the start of the game(illegally) and take a trip to the market and buy that gear. It's not like the current system makes you work for the equipment.
