The main point of the optimal rank / class system is to make it easier to change class on the fly (IE, one of the selling points of XIV) and restraining this ability IS a bad thing.

The dev team should be striving to increase the usability of that system with things like saving gear and ability sets and implementing at least a few endgame items with "suits:all" property (of course not as good as the more specialized ones), instead of gimping that system with tons of restricted items that will require the player to lose even more inventory space to hold all his gear if he happens to play on more than one class (AKA, pretty much everyone).

I personally wouldn't mind having a main, class and rank restricted set for my Thaumaturge and a secondary, high level "suits:all" equipment for my other classes in case I need to change class for whatever reason, instead of having a completely different set for every class and rank I may be leveling. Preventing that kind of annoyance is another advantage of the optimal class / rank system.
Basically make it more SP type game, that you play for 60hrs and then sell it to gamestop.

Again, decent idea, badly thought out. It has no longevity and sustainability.
