the only problem with optimal vs required is that there isn't enough gear that uses the required system.

Aside from class uniqueness issues, optimal rank is probably my biggest complaint currently still in game. Everything has been said in this thread already from both sides. But, as an example, take a look at every crafter wearing the exact same gear. I wear the same set on my r48 ARM as I do on my r30 ALC (because the stats are better than rank-appropriate gear). No progression, development, or any goals to speak of.
I hope it's removed or at least DRASTICALLY changed so the thought of wearing gear 20 levels above your rank is not only frowned upon, it's actually absurd because the penalties will be so rough. Right now, it's practically frowned upon if you DO use rank-appropriate gear because you're wasting tons of inventory slots for practically no gain.

To be honest, even thought I do not agree with you in terms of "removing the optimal rank system" I do agree in making it more noticeable and increasing the penalty. Also it would be nice to add that information in the UI. Because in the end, this game needs to be more "self explanatory". A good increase in the penalty and some UI changes to actually let us know how much we are loosing by equiping something that we shouldnt be wearing is good enough.
I think one of the core aspects of the game is FREEDOM. Removing the optimal rank , is cut off of that system. I am all for making a gear "worth" enough of ur level and get that feeling of acomplishment.. but at the same time I do not think the removal of the optimal rank system is the answer.

Let's have both! Oh, right we do.
Both optimal rank / crafted items and required rank items have their pros and cons.
Having both is the way to go. That is currently how the game is.
Really, why did you guys even decide to play FFXIV in the first place if what you so obviously wanted was completely different from what was on the box?
All you FFXI-wannabes that need "clearly defined goals" and can't think for yourself should just go back and play either FFXI or WoW or any other myriad of old-gen games where lack of options was the status quo and free-will was a luxury the Thought Police wouldn't allow you to afford.
Honestly, this is one of many self-destructive decisions SE has made ever since Yoshi took the helm and does nothing but make me want to leave even more. Why would I play a game exactly like WoW/TERA but with FFXIV's slow combat system? FFXIV had a good idea that could help them maintain a foot in the market.
Too bad they don't realise that.
Self-destructive game-design. That's all this is.

I have asked myself that same question since I began playing and reading the forums. But at every little thing that people want to change, they'll throw things like "2011! Standards!" and stuff.Really, why did you guys even decide to play FFXIV in the first place if what you so obviously wanted was completely different from what was on the box?

My personal opinion is that both systems can co-exist. But I would prefer to see a limit on how many required rank gears are out there. The whole optimal rank could be better with just the simple UI addition of telling us how does it affect us if we are outside the optimal rank. Simple as that.
As you pointed out, if they really abolish the Optimal Rank system, the value of one of it's main selling points (change classes on the fly) will be greatly diminished.
Couldn't have said it better myself.Really, why did you guys even decide to play FFXIV in the first place if what you so obviously wanted was completely different from what was on the box?
