Not everyone that needs help is a friendly newbie. You get taken advantage left and right. Helping at times, requires hours of your time depending on content and the persons learn rate.
And that might be where I would draw the line. I think it's important to make the effort, but the helping hand need only extend so far and at some point it's up to them to try and meet you half way.

We've all been there, banging your head against the wall because the person isn't getting it or better yet isn't receptive to your help or thinks they don't need it when they clearly do. That's when you turn around and head out the door.
