    how do YOU HQ items?

wanted to see how my method differs from others here in the forums. the general gist of it:

    inner quiet
steady hand -> hasty touch (to build up IQ)
    recover durability
    great strides + innovation + byregot's blessing.

although i usually am able to HQ high level items, im not happy with my method because it is not fool proof. too many times i get unlucky and hasty touch fails more than it succeeds and that messes up my numbers.

I run into that too. 70% predicted often comes back as an actual 30% success. I've seen some good rotations using Steady Hands II and Basic touch to build up Inner Quiet and end in your GS+Inn+BB finale.

From what i was reading you only need 7 or 8 touches with IQ to be able to 100% so if you have the cp you can use basic touch to get there and then followup with the GS INN BB combo. I'm not there yet so I am only regurgitating what i read.

Pretty much this. Use CP food, and just use basic. I can 100% 100% any item now with no worries of bad hasty luck.

Due to Byregot's Blessing being way overpowered, it's more like find the cheapest way to get 6-8 IQ stacks and then Byregot's Blessing will take care of the rest. Since on average, SH2 + 5 hasty touch = SH2 + 4 basic touch, but the former uses 72 less CP and you most certainly can get 10 durability back for 72 CP, so SH2 + Hasty is guaranteed to win out in the long run barring extremely bad luck. Of course since Byregot only need at most 8 stacks of IQ to finish the job, if you got enough CP you might as well use the Basic Touch which removes any uncertainty.

I steer clear of Astarica's method unless I absolutely cannot manage any other way. I HATE hasty touch with a bleeding passion and cannot tell you how often that 80% (Steady Hand II) feels like 0% with 5+ in a row all failing and the synth being botched. Eat the food and go with the basic touch method unless you cannot manage it at all. Even then, use as many basic's as you can with only the necessary "craps shoots" hasties.

Never encountered 5+ failures in a row for Hasty. Worst for me ever is 3/7.
But it is your best friend on star/2 star recipes. If I have some luck with +20 CP moves, there is some leeway to use the tier 1 quality move instead.

You basically have to fail 3 out of 5 combines with Hasty Touch to do worse than just using 4 Basic Touch. The chance of that happening is 5%, and it has to happen multiple times (one set of bad touches isn't going to cause you to fail). I hate the Hasty Touch method but it's by far the most reliable way to do any combine unless your stats are so good that you can simply finish the item at 100% using basic touch. The only problem with the Hasty Touch approach is that when you're on your #30 or so steps, sometimes you lose track of your CP/durability/etc and end up using a move that leaves you with not enough CP to do Great Stride + Byregot for whatever reason. Sometimes I get greedy thinking I can do a Comfort Zone + Master's Mend 2 and just didn't think about how much CP I have left and that really sucks, but even there Tricks of the Trade can usually bail you out.

This kind of question never has a set answer. Generally speaking if you have more than enough craftsmanship, control, and cp, just SH2 and 100 percent your touches with basic, standard, or advanced touches than finish with gear strides, ing (ing2 for 2 stars), innov, byregots and standard synthesis or careful synthesis 2 until finish.

Hasty touch is a fantastic skill and people are right that generally speaking hasty touch and sh2 will cost you significantly less cp in the long run. If I am using all normal quality mats for a 2 star item, then yea I will go hasty touch method. For 40 dur 2 stars it works 70 percent and more of the time. For 2 star 80 durabilities with all normal mats, I use everything and go with the final combo at the end and it hqs guaranteed.
