Thoughts on Siren?

I've heard some people say that Sirens were just regular monsters. What's your take on it? We've seen that Primals can split into multiple forms and take control of people's mind. I don't know to me it seems very likely that Siren could be a primal. Granted even then aren't some monsters formed from Aether?

References to the siren in-game seem to identify a singular entity from a larger group - implying that there are many sirens and we've encountered only this one.

How we'd classify them... dunno! Siren isn't very consistent in her FF appearances, but it seems that sirens are a species and not a primal in XIV, at first glance. She may even be a fresh incarnation entirely, aimed at staying close to classical tradition, as Eorzea is based on Ancient Greece (birthplace of the siren myth).

I could see her being ashkin (undead) as a spirit of the sea... perhaps a soulkin (cursed) attached to a shipwreck or the ocean itself...

I think she is a Ashkin, you get to fight her for a mission, you v Siren+minions. I think in most of the games she's been a Boss type mob but in some she was actual summon but I dont know atm she is just a boss type mob.

I think Siren is a Mission or Quest (althought can't remember the name or the like). I've had to fight her, she wasn't hard. I thought it was Garuda for a moment and before my state of confusion was over the fight finished.

Well, I know that Good King Moogle is a Moogle story come to life. Siren might be a case of the same thing. Enough sailors believing in the tale, bring it to life. The world is flooded with aether right now just begging to be shaped.

I think she'll be the boss of the pharos when it comes out next patch.

You didn't get to directly fight her in the story, it was more of a teaser battle. You fight her minions while she hangs out in the background. That just screams 'future content' to me, especially with how much effort they put in her design.

In the original FFXIV CE box art, there was some debate as to whether it was Siren or Garuda on the cover (if Siren, it would point to her being rather important). There was also some speculation then that she may have been the source of the Echo. Since we don't know what the original 1.0 plot was fully supposed to be, who knows if she once had a more important role in the story. The fact she has such a nice model seems to hint at such.

Third option is, of course, a physical manifestation of Hydaelyn. I'm still not sure which is most likely; she's not 100% conforming with any of the three, but that's Amano's thing. His artwork is always classical, timeless, and not 100% game-render-accurate.

A lot of the "Siren is our primal! She gave us the echo!" was just me making tenuous connections and going full Ancient Ascians Guy on it (ruffles his hair up). There could still be more to it, but I know better than to get my hopes up at this point. A boss for the pharos, though, that's just downright plausible.

If it is Siren, though, that means she must've been significant enough to put on the cover of the game, plot-wise.

Someday it'd be cool to know what the original plot for the game was going to be, just for curiosity's sake. ;)

Nah, that was definitely Garuda, my friend. The physical design of her feet and wing positioning gives it away, especially now that we've seen both Siren and Garuda in-game.

Was Garuda a major part of the plot in 1.0, that she deserved prominent CE cover space, then?

Possibly.

We know they originally had primal-related plans. And we know that in the realm reborn main scenario, Garuda was considered the most dangerous of the primals.

But we'll never know for sure.

Garuda was implemented in 1.0, defeating her was a major milestone in the White Raven saga.

According to the info provided for the new dungeon Pharos Sirius, the final boss will be "a siren" (like Gethyn said), certainly the same as the quest. There's no indication that she is an unique creature but just one of many.

I guess we will know for sure in patch 2.1 while we run that dungeon.

Dropping some 1.0 knowledge on you. Sirens are indeed a species of monsters not Primals. She is not unique there are many sirens they are just typically seen alone, assuming you live to tell the tale. The siren you encounter in main story grew bolder after the calamity but has been in the area for quite sometime. Intact she is aluded to in 1.0 although you don't directly meet her. The final armorer quest in 1.0 is about sirens and freeing a group of people from her. Mimidoa the Lalafell you meet in 2.0 to combat the siren is formerly the armorer guildmaster in 1.0. In the final armorer quest of 1.0 you have to craft him a pair of ear plugs so you can visit the siren's island(they are sdoesn'tame pair he used in 2.0). On the island you and mimidoa are deafened , all sound is turned off and you can not actually talk to npcs your there to save. Needless to say quest ends with getting everyone off the island before you draw the sirens attention, Mimidoa thanks you for the help but is uneasy that the siren will return again as she does in 2.0.

EDIT: Forgot at the end it turns out it was a group of girls pretending to be sirens. Thanks catapult.

You are however correct to say that it is one Siren among many. But each Siren is deadly and mighty in its own right, capable of bringing a mortal to their knees by the power of its enchanting voice.

All I know is you do a story quest which has a siren cast adds - although you do not engage in direct battle with Siren herself. This is a few quests before your battle with Garuda.

Apart from that Siren was a GF/Primal/Esper/Eidolon/Summon in FF8.

Interesting info here, if it's complete. Siren has only been a summoned being in 2 games from the main FF series. Siren was also a Boss in FFV, which would make her "powerful but not uber" status in FFXIV not without precedent.

Amusingly, Garuda has only ever appeared as a summoned being in FFXI and FFXIV. All previous appearances were as a boss or a common enemy.

It was kind of expected. Wind is the one element that has never had a consistent summon/monster association in the FF series. I don't actually think any 2 FF games have the same "Wind Lord" (so to speak). It has been Tiamat, Fenrir, Pandemonium, Barbaricca... compared to, say, Ifrit who has had a pretty consistent manifestation as Fire. Wind element rarely got much love since it was outside the holy trinity (fire, ice, lightning).

I think Siren would be a primal; after all isn't a primal just the aetheric manifestation of its worshipers? It is a neat concept that the sailors manifested her by believing the myth. Perhaps controlling undead to further serve her is the closest she can come to Tempering. A Pseudo-Primal, perhaps?

Also in many FF games summons were you just calling a monster to aid you in battle, 4,6,10,11, and 13(never played tactics) are the only ones that have a summoner in this manifestation. In 8 you get tonberrys, to deathtrain. They say in the smn description if its special or not but in the end its still just a special monster and not like in the case of 4,10,11,13,14. Even in 4 summons were living beings and exist in the summon world and you can summon monsters to her aid(chocobo).

Siren would only be a primal if she wasn't real and still in existence. It's stated in the quest times that she is in fact real and controls the souls of dead sailors and that Sirens(plural) have been around for quite a while. Saying Siren should be a primal is like saying every dragon should be a primal. She doesn't have worshipers just souls shes controls more like a necromancer meets bard and technically we don't know the real rules for primals yet we should get a big chunk of info since they said good king moogle is not a primal, in 2.0 at least thats what they have said so far as I believe he was one in 1.0, either but hes summoned it seems.

However with the property of Aeorzea I find it hard for beings to die because technically if you killed off all the sirens you could summon one back as a primal since its information is stored in the aether. However we still don't actually know how the Allag went about summoning and not being tempered, and we really don't know how(we know who) summoning/primals really came to be. They had to exist at one point in a physical form correct? or is it like a thought form where basically the Ascians told the beast men this is what Ifrit looks like(repeat), he will save you, worship him. How are primals able to temper from within the void?
With our current knowledge of primals its very possible that we ourselves are primals of the light and that's why we are called warriors of light, we exist because Aeorzea needs us and the reason they can't recall our faces is why all the warriors are different, they just thought of and worship warriors for their actions and their prayers caused us to come forth out of the void with no definitive features.

We spoke with the Lore team who mentioned that more story-related information behind the infamous Siren will be available in patch 2.1, but just to clarify, she's not a primal. :)

This, Siren is not a primal, she's just like Carbuncle, a summon.

Dirty mages. Pfft!

It simply means she is a summon/eidolon/GF. Her background story is not that strong to make her a primal, even if she has the potential to be one. Take it as a secondary "primal" (wanderer/lone wolf archetype) whose purpose is to fulfill a minor role in the series.

Just because she was a Guardian Force in FFVIII does not mean she must be a summon or a primal in this game. Numerous game-specific summons exist which appeared before and after as monsters or characters. Look at Cait Sith who appears as a summon in FFVI and a character in FFVII. Just because golem was a summon in FFVI did you assume when you first saw a golem that he would be a primal?

Anyone who played the smith story in 1.0 can tell you that sirens already have a back story in Eorzea, but there's no indication that they are not simply creatures in their own right.

IIRC, Siren s only an Esper in FFVI and a GF in FFVIII, a Boss in FFV and a normal monster in a few really old FF and FFD. I don't see her and will never see her as a normal summon (Well.. Fenrir too and he was a summon in FFXI...) Well just to say that...I wish she'll never be a primal in FFXIV XD

How do you classify Siren? Bird? Primate?

Pharos sirus im so excited! Seeing the siren in that video made me so excited to see different bosses in the game. I am more curious about her abilities during the dungeon as well will they be similar to the story mode it didn't show much of her but it was enough. She isn't a primal unfortunately she isn't big enough of a character to be compared to let's say ifrit in FF history.

But... Why is it called Pharos Sirus? What's the etymology here?

What if Siren is an ancient/primordial Ixali? She survived so lind due to stealing the life of sailors/magic It'll explain her appearance for one.

Most likely, as the bright-blue lighthouse seen from Limsa Lominsa is Pharos Polaris (a simple nod to the most famous star in our non-Eorzean night sky :P)

You know, this would be a very interesting theory - and I always like having more Ixali stuff - but wouldn't it go against some other things abotu her said in this thread?
EDIT: after all she looks so similar to Garuda and that would make sense...

The Tower of Pharos is the name we give to the lighthouse in Alexandria, of ancient Egypt. It was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. No wonder then that it is so tempting to use the term Pharos with respect to a significant lighthouse.

I haven't done pharos sirius yet, but does it talk about her origin at all?
