Need, Greed, Pass....what?

Can someone please explain how the loot system in dungeons works?

Is there only one item per chest? If I take it am I taking it from everyone? Can more than one person use greed? Can everyone pass? If so then what? What if more than one person chooses need?

I did my first dungeon last night and was so confused.

Need is class-specific, when you press need that means you basically REALLY REALLY NEED it ,so no other class can get it but you unless someone else is the same class as you in the party. As for greed you roll against everyone else in you party and pass is self-explanatory.

For MMOs I have only ever played the Phantasy Star and Monster Hunter Frontier games, which have a very different loot systems. I also did not have time to read the tutorial when it popped up as the rest of my party was moving on.

Yeah essentially need the item if you can use it as better gear, greedy if you plan to sell it for money or trade it, and pass if you don't want it.

Well this is in alot of mmo's better get used to it ^^

1. In the Loot notification box you see how many items is there - usually one.
2. Yes

5. Don't know - but that most likely never happens, the items most likely remains unclaimed.
6. The one with better roll will get it.

Thanks guys, I was just concerned I might be pissing people off with "Need" or "Greed." :)

I like that it is a roll system. Makes me feel less greedy!

Need - You can only Need something if it's for your class.

Greed- You only want it, but don't necessarily need it. Need comes before Greed, so if you roll Greed and someone rolls Need, then your roll for Greed will mean nothing, even if you rolled higher than the Need. Of course, if no one rolls Need, then those with the higher Greed roll will take the item.

Pass - You pass on the item.

If everyone passes or the winning person already has that Unique item in their inventory, it poofs, ie disappears. disappointingly.

Actually you can't even roll on a Unique item, need or greed, if you already have it in your inventory, though it doesn't check to see if your Retainer's have it in theirs, so you can technically have three copies of the same unique item by having one in your main inventory and both retainers.

That is a real problem in the game. I really get annoyed when people run off without giving me any time to read anything. Sometimes you just have to skip the tutorial or the other players loose patience, go ape-sheit and quit the dungeon after 5 seconds. Hence threads like this, where people need to fill out the blanks.

Wow.. This the New Player Help section, not the bash on people for asking for help section.
Alas, not every MMORPG uses the exact same lootsystem.. Stop being rude.

My Biggest Issue is that it doesn't let LNC/DRG 'Need' on the Aetherial Scale (iron-scale, Steel-scale, etc) (TNK-DEF) Armors despite listing them as equipment for LNC/DRG.

Hahahahaha so true! Carve and carry! Monster Hunter Frontier G was announced for the Vita last night! WOOHOO! Only in Japan for now, but the Vita is not region locked so import, import, import. (As long as the servers are not NA locked and the subscription is payable with USD) It also will have cross-play with the PS3 version! That, my friend, is the sound of a million Vitas selling in Japan! I swear I have seen the name GeistXIII somewhere, do you frequent Capcom Unity or have a MH related youtube? The Unity Hunters are all on Coeurl if you ever consider a different server!

Thats because it isnt completely based off class, its also based on needed stats. When you join a party, it fills the top bar with the stats that class typically needs. If an item is usable by that class and provides those stats can be Needed by the character.

Like a Shield that gives Int/Mnd can be Needed by a THM, but not a GLD, even though a GLD can use it.

Right, and these give STR & VIT in equal proportions. DRG/LNC Register under STR in the Stat. When I ran Sunken City, I encountered my first ever Tank and Healer that Greeded everything instead of 'Needing' their stuff.

Hm, then Im not really sure. Havent done the melee classes much, so I havent ever looked at when Need could be done for them (mostly since I have sets of armor from doing Greed on the other classes)

I'm not sure if you know this or not, so forgive me if I'm wasting your time. I noticed you said that you hadn't had time to read the loot tutorial when it popped up bc your party was running headlong over to the next mob. You can read those tutorials at your leisure whenever you want to. They're part of the Active Help system. Once a tutorial topic has been shown, it'll be listed in Active Help and you can go back and re-read anything you missed when it first popped up.

It's worth noting that not every item that drops in a dungeon is automatically bound to you. Greens can generally be sold. If you greed roll a green and win it, it will not be bound and can be sold. However, rolling NEED on that same item will instantly bind it to you, to prevent people from rolling need just to sell it.
