I think they need to add one. It'll save themselves a lot of headaches in the future.
Why would they want to host off-topic material on an ffxiv related discussion forum?
Because a few people want to make Osama Bin Laden threads?
it has not been a problem since march 8, why would it become important at any point? If some people start constantly making off-topic posts, they will get closed / deleted and it will stop like it has been since the beginning.
(I'm not stalking you, I swear it lol)
(Also, it wouldn't make things any easier, as off topic posts have even more chances to devolve into all kinds of crap and therefore would be even harder / require more work to moderate. )
Yet here we are the next day dealing with more off topic threads that could all be taking place in an off topic forum where the mods could just let the run instead of having to delete and close and send emails and temp ban people. This isn't going to be the last time this situation comes up.
I don't think it's a good idea. It's one thing when an unofficial fansite does it to keep their boards flourishing, and another when it's hosted by the official company. Also, they'd be making their jobs less easy.
For instance, I noticed today there were a couple of locked threads about bin laden. Why would SE want to bring political opinions on their official Final Fantasy XIV forums?
Edit: Silly speed-posters :p
It's a forum for people to discuss FFXIV related information and ideas amongst one another. It was also made so we could discuss FFXIV related ideas and information with SE and help shape the game. That is why it is called the FFXIV Official Forums, not the FFXIV and Off Topic Official Forums.
If you wanna talk about Off Topic stuff there is Zam, Core and like a hundred other FFXIV forums that allow off topic.
Yeah, if you want to talk about off topic things, then go to a fan forum. I come here to talk about FFXIV, CNN to talk about the news, and Engadget to about technology. So you can open up another tab to another site if you want to talk about things other than FFXIV.
Seriously what? Seriously wanting to focus on FFXIV and fix the game so it can be better than it is instead of talking about stuff that can be talked about on almost every other forum that exists on the internet?
Sorry that I use this forum for what it is supposed to be used for, focusing on building the FFXIV community and game as a whole.

I just refreshed. ALL threads are on topic. This is true 99% of the time. The other 1% is quickly removed. Your point?
I think it would create more problems, because in an off topic board, most people think they should post whatever they want and that's gonna lead to offending someone. Seriously, how often do people make an off topic thread in the General Discussion boards? Not that often.
At least they're offending each other because of FFXIV and not because of last week's sport results.
Look, I'm not going to say that an off-topic forum is by itself a bad idea, but it would generate far too much work for something that's clearly not needed at all. Anyone who wants to discuss off-topic stuff with FFXIV players can go to any fansite.
Believe, it's much easier to delete off-topic threads in the general discussion forum then making a whole new area needing moderation.
So why can't the same people who play the game talk about off-topic stuff in these forums? They might not have, or can't get accounts on these fan forums. What's going to be the difference when the game (if ever) is fully fixed? people are still gonna post what they want, and that's it.
Especially when they admit they're trolls. :)
He may have some good points to you, but to each their own. BelgianRofl is not a man of his word, he said if SE didn't post anything substantial about the game by April 16th he would quit the game and these boards, but he didn't.
Edit: Also he never posts any constructive criticism, he never explains how to make whatever he's complaining about better.
The way I see it is this: These forums are not created to take away traffic from the fansites already established, they were created for feedback on the game and a way for the devs to communicate with us the fans, easily. You want to talk sport/other games/the lastest single from Rebecca Black - go to the off topic forums on the fansites. Im beginning to wonder if some people think before posting -_-
People have opinions, don't bash them because you don't like the idea

Discussing random stuff isn't improving the forums. A lot of developers have been moving away from off topic forums because they aren't really all that beneficial. Fan sites are actually incredibly beneficial to MMORPGs. The more fan sites get out there, the more exposure the game gets and really off topic things are best off elsewhere. If you're not interested in improving fan sites, then you have too narrow of a focus and it's not helping the game. That type of mindset drove it into the ground in the first place.
