Public Transport?

I was a bit disappointed all the airship and ferry travel was reduced to a cut-scene(if even that) so I propose Public transport as a means to get people together in small groups for a couple minutes away from the regular gameplay.

Instead of everyone jumping on a chocobo porter for all locations maybe have a couple locations only available by chocobo cart etc. and bundle half a dozen people together. Put some time in to check the numbers etc. and make sure it is still worth doing rather then just teleporting and all the alternatives.

I know some people want to just run through as quick as possible but I think this game needs to put a bit more into building the community then it does at the moment

As much fun as this sounds (being an XI player), the vocal minority will just question why there was even such a time-sink in the game. They will moan and groan, even though chances are they'll never use it, until something happens. I remember in 1.0 that the ferry was, indeed, a ride. I rode it a couple times just to watch the world go by. Pretty big boat on the inside, too. But clearly, some people didn't really care for it and now the ferry's a cutscene.

I miss the boat. From what i remember, you could fish on it, and get special fish you couldn't get everywhere, and if you got tired of it taking a while, you could basically just exit it and be there. So it didn't really take that long. It wasn't perfect, but i actually miss it.

Just curious, were airship and boat rides in FFXI instanced? Or did we really fly/sail across the world? Because while playing the game, I often saw airships fly in the distance. Wondering if there were actual players on board.

They really sailed across the sky, stuck to exact timetables and the like. If you missed it well, go make a snack because it's gonna be another 15min :p

They were instanced, but they also made an airship/ferry in the zones at the same time. So essentially, there weren't real people on them, but it was synchronised perfectly with the zones.

I miss them too, I'd like them to bring them back. I hope if we go to another continent with an expansion, we actually have to travel. That first boat ride from Mhaura to Whitegate made Whitegate feel really far away.

If they made the time to balance the travel time with the cost of the alternatives it would keep everyone happy, being able to craft and fish etc. would also keep some people feeling productive. Mayhaps the odd Ice burg to crash into and mine for rare crafts?

Small group travel would give it a bit of a party feel without the pressure of running a dungeon or meeting the groups expectations of performance allowing people to have a bit of camaraderie with out the sometimes harsh judgement you get from a DF group

Man, 1.0 looks a lot better than this version does.

There's been talk of bringing back slow-travel, but only if the dev team can think of a good FATE to implement on it (to incentivize using slow travel). If they can't think of a FATE to implement there, they won't bring back slow-travel.

Looked much better, ran much worse. :(

We'll get a decent upgrade on graphics with the release of the DX11 client next year.

Make airships take 5 minutes, free.
Make ferries take 10 minutes, free.

Charge for instant ones.

This will help with the current economy problems.

I think it would work best if it gave you access to some fishing areas or some special merchants while on the ship, it'd give people a reason to get on and keep them from whining.

Honestly, riding the ferry and watching the sea was one of my favorite things in FFXI. I loved socializing with people there.

Yeah there is Teleport for the power players who cant spare a minute to smell the roses

The 1.0 travel was interesting but it got old fast. You would have to talk to the ticketer, then wait for the airship or boat to arrive, wait for everyone to dock, then wait for the entire trip. Then get off, then talk to the ticketer yet again to give you permission to exit the boarding area(why?). If I remembered correctly I would take the ship to LL then go afk, and if I didn't come back in time to get off the ship it would head back to uldah WITH ME STILL ON IT. Would have been quicker to walk. Its redundant waiting time that serves no purpose.

Throwing a bonus for 1.0 ferry: Did you know that during summer event it was decorated? That was really pretty and fun to watch... Maybe someone can find a video of summer event ferry... (it also had the event music)
