Tanks and healers of Eorzea, it has sadly come to the attention of many archers that we have something of a bad reputation in the community. While certainly there will always be bad archers, you should know that we are not all the same! That there are those among us that won't pull aggro, die, and blame the tank. That there are those among us that do more than autoattack. That there are those among us that have played MMOs before, and have functioning braincells!
For you, I offer: The Oath of the Competent Archer
1. I WILL count to three before unloading on the tank's target.
2. I WILL use Quelling Strikes.
3. I WILL run towards the tank if I draw aggro, not away from him/her.
4. I WILL NOT just spam Quick Nock on everything.
5. I WILL use Quelling Strikes.
6. I WILL NOT pull for "slow" tanks.
7. I WILL monitor my aggro, and ease off if my threat gets too high.
8. I WILL use Quelling Strikes.
9. I WILL switch targets and kill adds, especially if they are attacking the healer.
10. And above all, I WILL NOT complain about Bard. We knew DPS-Support was what we were signing up for!
Thank you for putting up with our more embarrassing kin. The rest of us will do our best to make your pugs as painless as possible!

I have 6 buffs I cast on myself during level 50 content (with quelling strike being in there) so that gives the tank enough time to build hate while I'm buffing so my early damage burst won't steal hate.Quote:

I usually hold off on the DPS bomb for a few seconds while the tank gets a few hits in. I just got Quelling Strikes last night so I'll have to test the waters with it.
With the moments I do pull aggro, I stop attacking altogether. Thankfully that doesn't happen too often. I think the Tank has a responsibility of holding aggro as much as I do to not draw it. -

I usually do all of those you listed. Fantastic list too. :) Even with following those though it still seems that people are quick to blame the archer/ bard. I think maybe that mindset comes from other games. Though I haven't been in a group with another bard let alone an awful one.

I find it funny when healer guildie complains about bards all the time on TS...omg, 2 bards and not 1 MP regen at "insert primal" when she's pugging it.
Or when I, as melee DPS, have to chase around after an silly (silly as in nonlethal) add that the archer is kiting is also fun. -

My one and only(and also biggest) gripe with bard/archer is...Well, let's put it this way. You're a mobile dps class who can run, jump, dance, grab a tea and still deal damage. How in the hell are some of you getting caught by easy to dodge AoE attacks from bosses. You have advantage of mobility >_<.

I think what a lot of people fail to understand with threat and tanks (I am a PLD) Until i get a 3 weapon skill combo of Fast Blade -> Savage Blade -> Rage of H. off it is easy to steal aggro from me. That combo takes a long time to get off. Shield lob plus flash does not generate the level of hate needed to keep a fully buffed archer from jumping me.
Please try to understand everyone's role and not just i'm here to push Max DPS everyone else get out of the way. -

that being said I love this topic. yay archer! yay bard! (there's bads for every class and right now there seems to be a lot of 'elitism' to say it mildly in regards to how people have to be 'not a baddie' and that the entire responsiblity is apparently always on.. well... the other roles. lol)
to the top dmg deal: I have long since accepted that even as a dps class it's not always most important that you personally are the top dps. I have no problem spamming support skills. it's part of the reason why I hope (against better knowledge) that parsers will never make it to this game. a lot of dps focus waaaay too much on their numbers and are actually proud of stealing aggro... :mad: -

Quelling Strikes + starting out with the DoTs (Windstrike and the poison one) hasnt pulled from tank yet. Just make sure you hit the tanks target AFTER he initially pulls. Obviously attacking a mob that hasnt been hit yet will pull ...so dont.
Its really not that hard people. MMOs are just about the easiest video game genre out there. Quit being Huntards and play with a team mindset. Teamwork > than your stupid trinity role! That goes for all classes. It just boggles the mind how people can make such idiotic mistakes so frequently.
As for the oath ... yeah sure ill take it. Not the last line though ... we're not support anymore. Ill gladly use the Ballads when necessary but im there to pewpew.
I am however on Limit Break strike until SE gives us a proper Limit Break ... Healing Wind is for healers. It really sucks having two Archers/Bard in a team and having only Healing and Tank LBs. -

You may be able to do 'faster" dps with no casting time as opposed to my BLM, but when it comes down to it, you are another support character and my damage outranks you (but we all know casters are supposed to be kinda OP anyways, its in every mmo). The bard songs are meant to help the teammates and meant to be used if you know how to use your class correctly, which I'm guessing you're not. How you managed to make it to level 50 is beyond me. With the play style and attitude you give off, I'd be out of that instance in a heart beat. Shoutouts to Bards though who know how to use the songs and saved our asses on Garuda!Quote:

Oh please tell me oh great lvl 28 archer (who doesn't have quelling strikes, or even Bard) what you plan to do during the other 75 seconds between the cool downs of quelling strikes? Heals? Tankz? You haven't even entered high level play and most of the problems actually are eliminated when most of the bad tanks are weeded out. In fights where DPS is a determining factor (e.g. HM Titan, Demon Wall, etc.) You can't afford to be held back by tanks who can't hold aggro over 2 constantly healing healers and 4 constantly DPS(-ing) DDs. In case you didn't know, Bard actually does it's role (DPS) quite well and if it had no buffs, it still would be the same situation. E.g. I've over 480 crit so fights usually go something like this (more often when I use Internal release)
GCD1: Fires Straight Shot
Off GCD: Fires Bloodletter
GCD2: Fires Venomous shot
Off GCD: Venom crit, Fires Bloodletter
GCD3: Fires Fires Windbite
Off GCD: Venom crit, Fires Bloodletter
GCD4: Fires Heavy shot, straighter shot activated
GCD5: Fires Straight Shot, crits due to straighter shot
Off GCD: Venom crit, Fires Bloodletter
Off GCD (again...): Windbite crit, Fires Bloodletter
GCD6: Fires Heavy shot, Heavy shot crits
.
.
.
Not sure if that BLM guy was serious either when he looks at "faster DPS" or what. DPS is a rate (S stands for seconds) so... faster is higher. And this has practically no TP cost (total net -60TP for the 6 cooldowns example) so the damage is indefinite (no "spikes"). So yeah... Of course I didn't include any of the buffs either (two +20%, straight gives indefinite [practically] +10% crit, another +20% crit, triple auto attack, other moves off GCD (12 second CD)). Of course you can continue believing what you want but I've never cleared Demon Wall as fast as I can with 2 Bards. Yeah, no AOE limit break, no DD limit break, just attack the bees and they die quickly. -

Watching your enmity bars is CRUCIAL to playing an Archer/Bard well!!! We also have such a huge advantage being able to shoot while running, so I find that constant movement helps reduce the chances of getting hit xD It's a pretty easy class if you just learn how to PAY ATTENTION to what is going on around you.
