Granted, I'm tired of people referring to Arcanists as ARC and Pugilists as PUGs but the game does tell you the abbreviations via the default Gear Set naming scheme. -

The game's GUI also actually states your current class/Job's abbreviation above your EXP bar in the game by default anyway, so there is really no excuse to get the official abbreviations wrong, and some of the abbreviations originated for the same Jobs back in FFXI (like White Mage=WHM), so some at least should be familiar to many players. I think some people just get used to calling them a certain way and it's a tough habit to break.

I like abbreviations I can read out whenever possible, so ARC to me is better than ACN by a wide margin. Although I reference that so little that I think I just spell it out all the way rather than the abbreviation. Should be SMN or SCH at the point we are taking frequent repeats of use that justify needing an acronym, rather than ACN lol.

Arcanist gets mentioned because of the whole SCH / SMN split thing.
Maybe not the best example then but I still like ARC over ACN (yet clearly taken, by a relic of time :p), or maybe another example in that I like PUG instead of PGL. BOT instead of BTN.
Like if I was referring to Alchemist I'd be happy to use ALC but Carpenter never registers, at least in some natural way, as CRP. Crrrrppp. See.. Role play.. krr... paaah.. Honestly I'd probably prefer to call them CAR lol. -

In case it was appearing like I was suggesting SE needs to change job abbreviations I was mostly just describing a personal quirk preference that things have a sound over just letters.
Like you don't say L A N. You say Lan, like almost a mandarin name- lan kai or something. Often things that don't have a good sounding but potential to make a sound abbreviations / acronyms get shifted a little. Like Why-fy, or lol is often just thought as sounding akin to lul (not L O L, unless you're a valley girl "like oh my god that's so L O L" or trying to be "hip").
Or at least that's how my brain goes about it. Even if I'm not going to say it to someone at least there is a 'sound' for it in my brain. Not an important issue, at least to me, just one I think is fun to discuss and share.

I read ACN like A-sin (because it doesn't make a natural pronouncible 'word' unit I see each letter individually first, nothing comes from ACN in word format therefore I read the letters then). A-kun makes me think you're thinking Japanese-like lol. Iscah-kun, I don't read what you read :p. Neither of those do I feel are great for sound effect, in terms of memorable at least. However Arc is memorable, at least to myself. Arc reactor, arc like angles, the beginning of many words (architecture), etc. Is also the beginning sound for arcanist which would have made it perfect for that job (like SAM -> Samurai or NIN -> Ninja).
I've been fine with the mages just out of seeing them soooo much in FF games, WHM, BLM, RDM, this is childhood stuff at this point. Although RED would have been so blatant and perfect when you think of it on it's own (unfortunately it breaks the consistent naming scheme for the other jobs so.. that's not ideal).
Noting again none of this is terribly important (at all lol), and just I have a bias for quick and easy memorable sounds (like CAR instead of CRP, CON was preferable to me over CNJ). Although since I've played this game for so long I usually just type out the names of what I intend if I think the abbreviation isn't that helpful or don't care to remember it (plus they only get three letters to make these work so I'm sure they do the best they can lol). -
