Unfortunately, the kinds of people who do this aren't the ones who are going to read this thread and go "you're right, I've been doing it wrong this whole time! Thanks!"
Edit: Though while we're at it, a big hearty thank you to tanks who don't just let the whole group die because of this. The other Damage Dealer in your group who might be doing it right and waited 40 minutes for the group appreciates it!
It is quite annoying, but usually shield lob *AND* provoke/flash before starting single target rotation thru rage of halone will allow me to grab and keep the first add, and then i throw a couple more flashes before the healer pulls the other mobs
Id rather establish stable aggro but with groups lately who rage at the tank when they pull threat after thier first attack... its just not fun
I've noticed this with healers, usually casting a last SS or something like that just as I voke a boss and they get hate first. Kinda messes with me, but its easy to get hate back, usually.
absolutely. i'm a Bard - and yeah, it can be a royal pain when the party does not work as a team. i'd like to add however, it'd be great if the tank could, a. mark their first target, b. not run into a dungeon room and start hacking away at the first creature and finally c. not assume either everyone in the light or full party has run the dungeon before. it's such a wonderful game full of mostly cool people from all around the world, and i only speak for myself here, but i learn something new every time i log into the game. cheers.
I've dealt with many tanks that even if I wait 10 seconds, the tank will barely have hate on the enemy and as soon as I start attacking, it shifts to me. That's 10 seconds of the tank hitting it. Not counting time running over towards it.
I would have to agree. people need to think before they leap. went into sunken temple this after and the tanked died 2 times within the first 2 pulls before we figured out what once 1 shooting him. then I get into a level 44 trail and everyone kept running in and not trying to figure stuff out.
Yes sir! XD
I notice that Tanks sometimes have 2 options - either keep full aggro on 1 mob so that DPS doesn't pull aggro, or spread it out a bit so that healer doesn't pull aggro. Some tanks can do both (but not without concentration it seems, as they slip up from time to time). Hey if we pull it, we tank it right?
I only pull mobs because I know my healer/tank is bored and needs some excitement. Never, ever do it on bosses =X
there's also tanks that aren't aware that when they pull a group of mobs and they are only attacking one of multiple mobs the first cure, stone skin, or attack gets the hate on the rest of the mobs automatically. there's just as many horrible tanks as any other class in the game.
i do agree with what you are saying in wait until there's hate established as that should the norm, but it does work both ways and tanks need to play their role properly as well.
its a Deal tank.. only if you start marking your targets make cc control so much simpler hate cc a target just so the so the tank can run over and attack the one sleeping in the back
Tanking in this game takes real work, with no forced taunt and no threat leeches, but it's all the more fun because of it. At my level, I find marking mobs, pulling with a shield toss, running in and flashing, and all is pretty much good to go as I then start a single target aggro rotation and flashing again for good measure. All this takes just a few seconds. Except for a few oddballs from the Duty Finder most dps I've run with are pretty good at giving me that time. Of course, that's just for your standard 2-4 trash mob groups. Dealing with adds and special mechanics often requires fancy footwork and improvisation.
And oh yes, always trying to switch to the next mob in the list before the first mob is dead so that when dps switches targets you already have a strong aggro head of steam and they can continue hitting all out, which I like because the faster the mobs die the less time they're around to pound on me.
Agree with the OP, as a WHM if the DPS keep doing such a thing, i just let them die until they have understood they're not a Tank.
It sometimes takes 2 or 3 times before they get it. I don't care if they rage at me in the process, learn your place and everything should be fine, Tank and Healer always run the group not the DPS.
My priority is ( in order ):
1. To keep the Tank alive.
2. To keep myself alive so i can obviously keep the Tank alive.
3. DPS, when they are legitimately needing heals.
4. Pets, if i want to. Even tho it should be the SMN/ACN/SCH responsibility to take care of this.
My job is not to keep some impatient DPS who think they can Tank, alive.
Sometimes it's not the DPS at all. E.g.
*Tanks attack Ifrit*
*Spends 10 seconds waiting for them to get to a stable position to put down flaming arrow*
*Fires DoT*
*Ifrit sprints towards me*
Tank: OMG LRN2 AGGROZ
Pardon?
And for you... I quoted both the boss and the moves I used. DoTs don't generate aggro aside from the initial hit, of which one of my moves didn't have. I think you're just being a fool right now.
It is only an issue with those who do it on purpose or to be "Elite"
II do my best to grab main shift halone to secondary to hold them back to main, toss in a flash and usually it is good to go. Then you get the clueless that shift to what ever you are not focused on to try to be a bad ass, and my motto is "Oh sorry you want to tank? OK go ahead.."
Tank is going to do his best to keep the party alive, but primarily the healer first. IF the DPS cause an influx and it shifts to the healer. Ill drop back cover the healer first.
To the above person, it is hard to take someone who majored in ebonics seriously. You do realize which abilities cause that type of agro and why? Why you begin a base line attack before the builds? That some bosses actually pick targets based on multiple aspects?
As a DPS I try my best to manage my aggro while dealing optimum damage. If I see that I go to 2nd place on the hate meter from nothing, then I'll stop right away until the tank gets complete control of it.
Same goes to bosses when I'm almost close to catching hate.
pop fight or flight before your shield lob.
or if you're a manly man - unchained + berserk before your tomahawk
seriously
the enmity lead early on is a big deal, easier to get in the habit if you start early
Tank marking target helps obviously...but it is not compulsory. It's not hard to see which target the tank is hitting, or which target is being CC-ed.
Keeping enmity on a single mob is simple. Halone combo and flashes does the job.
Multiple mobs is a different story. I normally Savage blade one > Halone the next and voke the third. (obviously weaving flashes between)
The problem is when there's 3-4 mobs and the healer starts going batshit insane before I've managed to get threat on all of the mobs. You don't need to cast cure on me when I've lost less than 2% of my HP, I'll be ok. >.>
I'm always watching the enmity meter but sometimes it'll jump from yellow to red. At orange, I pretty much stop attacking (aside from auto). Sometimes even auto attack will pull enmity ahead of the tank. -_-
I get this with the dreaded Carbuncle. :(
There is a full blown aggro meter, which is better than the color chart
Look at the party window, under the class symbol, A = agro, # = place in line, Bar shows how close to pulling
Arcanist here, I always wait for the tank to make first move and attract the aggro before attacking, but may I add my two cents for other fellow DPS: don't start running around if you get aggro on yourself, try to stay near the healer and behind the tank so you won't attract more aggro to you, I've had one party in which the other dps started running in circles to try to escape and he ended up attracting more enemies to himself. Healer was foccused on tank so I had to act as secondary healer for that dps :/
I always wait 5secs before attacking.
Dear tanks, mark please.
The way I'm picturing this makes me cringe and I would say no times 1000 to this. If a dps pulls hate the last place i want him to be is near the healer. Idealy, I want him right to my side or in front of me. Obviously we're talking ranged and magic users because the other dps will be right there. As a tank I don't want to be chasing after mobs so stay near your tank or run to your tank! If you're tank is smart he'll pull hate off of you right away.Quote:

As a warrior I just usually overpower everything so things stick on me and then i like to have some fun with bloodbath and overpower and berserk and internal release and get a nice return on my hp. lol I usually can handle not having dps not attacking the same target as I am (though might be a bitch on my healer) but I often keep hate on mobs. Im tempted to try paladin because I want to know how much different it is, I though paladin was the easier of the tank jobs (to keep hate and have crowd control) but most people tell me I do better. Anyway, correct me if I'm wrong but there is an /assist command isnt there? I would assume dps could use this to focus on what the tank has, which is a lot easier/faster than having the tank mark everything. For me marking is a problem sadly because im on ps3 and i havent found a way to mark efficiently and as quickly as possible and I have found that even if I wait 2 seconds to engage a mob or properly mark them people are in such a rush they get tired of waiting and engage. Seriously wheres the fire?
Sorry, I think I wasn't clear, when I said near the healer I meant keep your distance from him so you don't pull the aggro on him, but don't run to the complete opposite side of the room and far from the tank as well. I also play on PS3 and as I said before had to run as healer instead of dps sometimes and it was very hard to target the other dps for healing when they were runnig off my screen view all the time >.<
