Summoner rodent sized pet??

Ive been playing Final Fantasy games since I was very young and I remember the "epicness" of the summons in FF8 where Ifrit would drop down from the sky and your playstation controller would vibrate, really gave you a sense of how powerful summons were. In FFX Yuna and Seymour summoned huge creatures practically 10 times their size, on Yuna's Ifrit aeon she could sit on his shoulder, really gave you a feel for how big and how powerful your character had to be to tame such a creature. In FFXI I remember summoning titan and other summons and they were at least 3-4 times bigger than your character which was great, I felt like a summoner. Here we are in FFXIV and I feel as if my character went out in the backyard and put a leash and collar on a squirrel.

I don't care if my pet doesn't do a huge burst of damage, but for the love of god make it look menacing. I hate walking around with Jiminy Cricket (Garuda), a piece of buttered up popcorn (Titan), and Impfrit.

Thanks for the laught. I do have to agree with you. I might not be a summoner but they do look like weaklings.

Yeah..... but in final fantasy XI you were using a piece of their essence yet they were full sized. Personally I don't want the egi's to be uber huge but I mean they could of done better on the size and design the garuda egi looks NOTHING like garuda.

lmao man you are completely right. That was the main reason I did not roll a summoner.

Ya i am thinking about switching from SMN for now into something else till they change it.

My main class to play was going to be Summoner.. but now it's like wtf were they thinking?? And I love how people are defending SE's decisions so fiercely in the other related forums, "SMN is fine, it's a good DPS and class works well" well hell, so what if it works well, why did they name it summoner if the whole point of a summoner is missing in FFXIV!? lol.. I would have been more happy if they just made this a new class altogether and named it something else and later announced they were making a REAL summoner somewhere along the future instead.

I'm a main SMN in FFXI.. and here I thought I could finally cancel my FFXI accounnt after so many years but NOPE! Clever SE.. keep me paying for FFXI since the jobs there actually feel like what are intended to be and what they're friggin named after. Case in point: Ranger now is a Bard lolwut. Miss the old days of a class being a standalone thing, now it's all mixed up and confused IMO and that's how we end up with this big ol mess of a "summoner"

Those people are the WoW fanboys that have never played any of the FF games what i was thinking summoner was going to be was a class that you have some skills but you would be mostly backed up by the primals or at the very least Summon them out to use a 1 attack skill then leave Diamond Dust,Hellfire, Doomtrain ext not this whole lets make a DoT class and add pets that dont deal that much damage and call it Summoner and lets see how long it will take people to get mad.

Seriously! Why as a Summoner am I casting diseases like a freaking WoW warlock? That doesn't even make sense!

This is why I play a black mage. I would of played a summoner if I felt like one. I'm not asking for full sized primals but maybe something, at least, as big as my character or mount.

This isn't FFXI. Different game, different lore.

Also, expectations of how something should play/act just because of previous iterations is what results in the huge disappointment that's seen. Nothing has ever said that Summoner has to be designed in the way it maybe always has been. Again, different game, different lore. It's the same reason as to why Dragoon doesn't have a pet wyvern. Just because XI did it, doesn't mean XIV has to.

Also, I've never played WoW, and I'm a long time FF fanatic, and I'm happy to defend this version of summoner. It's different. And I like different.

Oh yeah it is a different game but I was trying to say using the oh its just their essence excuse to excuse the kinda rubbish design (IMO) is something I don't like. Considering the design (not talking about size) was better in XI.

As I said titan is just a bunch of floating rocks and garuda egi looks nothing like garuda. The egi's are the avatar of a god I think square could of done more.

The only decent designed summon is ifrit. Well nothing I say will convince you not to like something but fundamentally the design of the egi's could of been better in my opinion

The posts on this forum about summoner are hilarious. People come to the forums to cry about something they know next to nothing about. So much QQ about models and the design for summoner with no regard for game design and balance.

So you don't like the looks of the egis but with the inception of fates and high player volume in a smaller area you simply cannot have what players are asking. Look at guild wars 2 and you will see why too much affects/screen clutter can be terrible. It's not a matter of what you may have thought the summoner was going be at release it's a matter of smart game design. Also, it's a character model. Whether you like it or not it's not game breaking and not worth all the QQ on the forums. You always have to be thinking how would this change affect every aspect of the game. Right now with the volume of players I applaud the developers for their bold choice in models

The point you mentioned about Fates is probably why SE will never fix the summoner's avatars. It's sad, really. It sounds like you're not an FF fan, but as an FF fan that loves the summoner and black mage classes, let me tell you, what they have done to the summoner class is nothing short of heresy to fans. Yeah I am absolutely a FF fan. Ive been with FF for a long time in my gaming career. The nostalgic feeling I get from playing this is great but it takes a really close minded person to acknowledge that the game mechanics and MMO setting dont allow for anything other than what is already implemented and still QQ on the forums about it.

It just goes to show the people who cry about this are inexperienced MMO players, or are just blinded by the QQ tears they cant see obvious facts.
Dont give me the argument that FFXI had big summons because that was a game that came out almost 10 years ago (not sure the exact time) and the system requirements, gameplay, graphics engine, and so much more has changed dramatically. Remember when gas prices were so low? QQ why cant we just make everything like the olden days. Stop living in some world where a FFwiki tells you how a class should play. Reroll you make the rest of us look like babies.

You are a wow warlock, it's very clearly the template SE used when designing the Summoner class. They did there own thing with it, but they were obviously eyeballing the Warlock Party Role.

I think Ifrit should at least be the size of Roegadyn... and titan a little bit bigger.

This is the reason I do not play summoner. I mainly played summoner in FFXI. But the summons in FFXIV just look pathetic.

im curious if they did it this way so that they could add another 'form' to the egi later, maybe in an expansion

Amazing how many people are not even willing to give the concept a chance.

I was skeptical, sure... that is, until I earned Ifrit Egi, but now that I have Titan Egi too? I applaud SE for how they were implemented in the class quests.

Summoner in this game plays exactly like a Affliction warlock from WoW. I was expecting more emphasis on the summon not the summoner
Oh and when you do the last quest for summoner you can see the diference between the size of your pet and what it suppose to be :)

I don't even care about being a DoT caster. But come on, these egis are just kindergarten stuff. I wanted a freaking avatar of destruction, not a impish red thing, or whatever that floating popcorn is. Come on guys. You can't be serious about liking these designs... Their dps and AI/Management should definetly get an overhaul, and their sizes, freaking scaled, at the very least.
Perhaps making enkindle make then take their real primal form for an amazing flashy attack. That's is the least I expect in future patches.

I 100% completely agree with the OP. I never got far into ff11 to see summoners as I was young back then and did not have time to grind and play too long. But now that i have my own rig and mmo experience i was excited to play a summoner. When i heard i could summon ifrit, titan, and garuda I had high hopes. But then i saw what we were really summoning... I am now very let down. When carbuncle is bigger than ifrit and titan i believe we have a problem. These summons are not flattering at all nor impressive. I don't want to be a dot casting warlock i just want my summons, my REAL summons. If i wanted floating fairies i would role a scholar, which is probably what I'm going to end up doing

Yeah, as SMN is currently at the bottom of the DPS barrel, let's give up completely on the DPS wild goose chase and let us have a giganormously huge avatar.
And to prevent screen being overridden by the avatar moving, let just have them stay on the side doing nothing but cheer at us sometimes.
That would help our enjoyment greatly.

I could unlock a 50 SMN but in all honesty I'm so disappointed with the size of the avatar I wont even bother. The avatars IMO should atleast be of equal size as large Roegadyn. Anything else and no thanks. As pety as that may be I'll just chose to not play it. To tell you the truth I just ignore the fact its even in game.

Thanks for giving me a good laugh and remember that this version of Final Fantasy is WoWified. You are not really playing a summoner, you are playing a WoW Warlock class.

All these WoW kiddies.... you know before Affliction Warlocks there were these things called Necromancers..... They were in games and had these game mechanics before WoW.


Yes, Summoner plays like a necromancer from the older days more than a summoner from FFXI, but I still find it fun. I do wish that the avatars for the "egi" were better, but if that was a sacrifice they had to make to reduce lag then I'm ok with that. Too many games lag to hell in the type of events this game handles almost flawlessly. I miss my summons from FFXI... especially Fenrir, but I will probably just have to make due with these.

Also... unless I just don't remember. In FFXI I seem to remember SMNs healing the majority of the time and rarely using their summons except for a few key abilities and then you would un-summon them. At least in FFXIV we can keep them out without worrying about mana drain.

This was the whole reason my summons-obsessed friend decided not to get the game with me. He played in the beta and, after having come from Guild Wars 2, was disappointed by his "rat" summon and how pathetic they look. Titan looks like a floating pile of ant-gravity vomit floating around the summoner's head. Garuda looks like a green kite. Personally I don't mind the size if not just for the comic relief of seeing summoners. I guess if I played as a summoner, sure I'd probably be disappointed though.

But I love dungeon-diving with floating vomit. Always lightens the mood.
