Summoner rodent sized pet??

Ive been playing Final Fantasy games since I was very young and I remember the "epicness" of the summons in FF8 where Ifrit would drop down from the sky and your playstation controller would vibrate, really gave you a sense of how powerful summons were. In FFX Yuna and Seymour summoned huge creatures practically 10 times their size, on Yuna's Ifrit aeon she could sit on his shoulder, really gave you a feel for how big and how powerful your character had to be to tame such a creature. In FFXI I remember summoning titan and other summons and they were at least 3-4 times bigger than your character which was great, I felt like a summoner. Here we are in FFXIV and I feel as if my character went out in the backyard and put a leash and collar on a squirrel.

I don't care if my pet doesn't do a huge burst of damage, but for the love of god make it look menacing. I hate walking around with Jiminy Cricket (Garuda), a piece of buttered up popcorn (Titan), and Impfrit.

Thanks for the laught. I do have to agree with you. I might not be a summoner but they do look like weaklings.

Yeah..... but in final fantasy XI you were using a piece of their essence yet they were full sized. Personally I don't want the egi's to be uber huge but I mean they could of done better on the size and design the garuda egi looks NOTHING like garuda.

This isn't FFXI. Different game, different lore.

Also, expectations of how something should play/act just because of previous iterations is what results in the huge disappointment that's seen. Nothing has ever said that Summoner has to be designed in the way it maybe always has been. Again, different game, different lore. It's the same reason as to why Dragoon doesn't have a pet wyvern. Just because XI did it, doesn't mean XIV has to.

Also, I've never played WoW, and I'm a long time FF fanatic, and I'm happy to defend this version of summoner. It's different. And I like different.

Oh yeah it is a different game but I was trying to say using the oh its just their essence excuse to excuse the kinda rubbish design (IMO) is something I don't like. Considering the design (not talking about size) was better in XI.

As I said titan is just a bunch of floating rocks and garuda egi looks nothing like garuda. The egi's are the avatar of a god I think square could of done more.

The only decent designed summon is ifrit. Well nothing I say will convince you not to like something but fundamentally the design of the egi's could of been better in my opinion

im curious if they did it this way so that they could add another 'form' to the egi later, maybe in an expansion

My main class to play was going to be Summoner.. but now it's like wtf were they thinking?? And I love how people are defending SE's decisions so fiercely in the other related forums, "SMN is fine, it's a good DPS and class works well" well hell, so what if it works well, why did they name it summoner if the whole point of a summoner is missing in FFXIV!? lol.. I would have been more happy if they just made this a new class altogether and named it something else and later announced they were making a REAL summoner somewhere along the future instead.

I'm a main SMN in FFXI.. and here I thought I could finally cancel my FFXI accounnt after so many years but NOPE! Clever SE.. keep me paying for FFXI since the jobs there actually feel like what are intended to be and what they're friggin named after. Case in point: Ranger now is a Bard lolwut. Miss the old days of a class being a standalone thing, now it's all mixed up and confused IMO and that's how we end up with this big ol mess of a "summoner"
