Got the quest stuff, all the pieces. Is that all that they are? Graphics and slightly better stats? Where are the ability/skill boosts? I've found pink stuff better than the blues my scholar gained. I read online I can BUY the af2 gear. I go to look, expecting better, and run around looking for them until I notice on this one vendor selling, what couldn't possibly be them, this darklight stuff with the icons for the af set I have. Just stats. Not even the stats I'm using.
What the hell is this junk? Are the AF weapons the same?
What happened to the AF gear?

ummm junk? For starters this is not 1.0 or FFXI, so different system. The stats were simplified, and AF2 is the best gear in 2.0, more will come in 2.1. If you are expecting like 15 different stats with slow resistance look for materia to specialize. Those stats are not as heavily needed atm. They are best for what is offered right now statwise and all. I don't understand what you were expecting? are you wanting ability enhancers? Skill Speed is a buff for those already, what are you looking for really?
And if they are not stats you are not using then you are not using the stats that are for your class... AF stats promote stats that your job relies on. -

I miss the job-specific boosts AF used to give, enhanced fists of wind, enhanced heals, enhanced defiance etc. The simplicity of the stats in this version makes every gear choice not even a choice. Piece B is better than Piece A in all situations. Can't we see things like reductions in specfic ability cooldowns again? Or enfire procs? Or lower damage but with a chance to proc double-attack? Or critical hp-triggered regens?
It may very well be that they will come with level cap increases, but even if that were the case, there should still be some at this level. -

I play scholar. I use heals. Since 400 is the best heal I have for constant spam. There are some bosses that can out do it. I had tanks go down because my pixie was saving other players. So I focus on Crit. With my current gear, mix of AF and pink, I have 405 crit. That gives me 1 in 6 chance to hit with a 1k-1.1k heal. Since my pixie shares the crit I have her heals have a 1 in 6 chance to crit. This also gives me a 20% chance to get a 20% boost in casting speed. Btw. From what I can tell that esteemed 20% boost only boosts actual casting speed by, around, 5%.

The AF gear is the basic armor to being end game / hard mode ready. They reward you this armor just for leveling and completing your job quests, and it's EASY for everyone to get. Do you think the best armor in game should just be given to everyone this easily? The stats on this gear are better than anything else I'd worn before it, and I'm pretty sure they give you this armor so you look like a BAMF (Bad Ass Mother Fucker) during cut scenes as you power through the final 8-man duties for the main story line.
Better gear will come from running actual endgame content, and I strongly feel that's the way it should be. Otherwise every Joe can get the best gear, and that ruins an MMO IMHO.
On a side note, I've noticed that after getting through Garuda, the groups I was put in for the final two 8-man instances were much better players. At the current time, I feel that Garuda is a gear check and sort of a gate keeper for the rest of end game... I like it. -

She basically test every player to see if they know their stuff about their roles and if they're properly geared to move on. I wasn't actually focused on the AF gear you're given free ot charge. I was talking about the darklight stuff mainly. The ones you can just buy right from the special merchant. I've been checking the higher end guys who stand around but have yet to see any gear with 'special' additions.
Simple can be good in a great many things but most of the time simpler means lower quality. Beans in water is boiled beans. Beans water and spices is Chili! Which would you prefer? -

What we mean is for AF (and other gear) to have it's job specific (or additional) special effects. Like for example, in 1.0 Bard hands (I think it was the hands) had a "increases ballad" effect on them which would increase the mana regenerated by ballad by a small amount.Quote:

AF wasn't the only armor to have effects like this too, the moogle weapons used to have some sort of hp regen per hit I believe as well.
All of this simply creates interesting variety in the gear. You still had gear tiers (you wouldn't use AF over darklight) but things were more interesting than simply x has higher stats than y. It also allowed you to gear according to your playstyle or a fight.
Like to support more as Bard than DPS? Use the AF hands.
Going as Dragoon against a boss you won't be able to melee as often as normal? Use Dragoon AF feet for the extra ranged jump damage.
Currently there's no variety like that. It's simply boring. -

They won't put special effects, at least not now, because it will get to the point where you only keep a piece of gear around for an ability, and in order to replace it the next piece of gear would have to have the same boost or offer more of a boost which is essentially what we have now.
Look at FF11 where stuff on the basic AF outclassed higher level gear, Level 51 Elemental staves were much better than any other mage weapon even when the level cap raised to 99, and everyone's inventories suffered and content was DoA because raw stats weren't as good as boosting abiliites.
Besides most abilities are boosted by stats so increasing your stats is increasing your ability effectiveness. -

I am hoping the approach they are going is "simplify to make it work" then Amp it up as new patches come.
Hopefully 2.1 will add special effects, as simple stats allowed them probably to balance the game easier to start.

I know this isn't XI, and of course there are no gear swaps mid combat in this game, and that the 2 combat systems are completely different however... I really do miss how one piece could be useful even if it was 10-20 levels lower than cap because of the stats on the gear. Things just seem way too simplified now and it takes the fun out of it, and like people say we all look the same. Tiered gear is not the way forward imo, it's just an easy portrayal of a gear treadmill simplified to help people understand what's next to do.
Take FFXI - you would see people at the level cap (75) using a Haubergeon (level 59 iirc) because the stats on it worked with certain setups. Now this was all user defined, nobody told you this was better you just worked it out. There were a lot of other sets that worked for the same job and with all different level gear, for example you could swap out hauby with a scorpion harness (level 55) if you needed the acc and evasion, or the level 70 piece if you needed more a job specific boost. There was always the most efficient set that would be used and a lot of people would look the same but it was nowhere near at this level. Please SE, bring back variety and choice. -

It isn't variety and choice if one piece of gear clearly outclasses anything that comes after it, it's just bad design. It was a huge problem where FF11 got new content that was harder or more involving than old content, and 95% of the drops in said event were useless right out of the gate at best. Not to mention the even worse situation of stuff like Leaping Boots and Emperor Hairpin which literally had no equals for 50 levels or so.
There should be more variety in what to equip, yes, but it should be due to having a variety of content to get gear from rather than making low level gear overpowered which not only screws up game balance but invalidates doing content later on. -

I picked up all Wyvern Hp+ gear. I took a bit harder hits but to make up for it my wyvern tossed cures that gave 150+ more hp. I kept wondering what my books on my summoner would look like from Garuda, Ifrite and Titan hard modes. How would it boost my summons. Then I did a little digging... The complexity of Xi kept me for years. In this dungeon drops are tops, special npc gear the elite, crafted stuff.. trash. Gear made simple. Stats made easy.
This game isn't as buggy as it's preincarnation but the sameness I have found in dozens of other games is infecting it as well and I keep wondering when boredom will set in. -

Of course Emperor hairpin and Leaping boots were better for 50 levels because the rest of the gear in that level range was incredibly easy to obtain - the equivalent of white classed items in this game. I believe personally this is because everything is incredibly generalised into simple stats. There are no actual bonuses. There is nothing class specific, only that you want to be using VIT as a tank, DEX as ranged, MND as a healer etc. If they added effects back that enhance certain abilities it would give a lot more meaning to other sets and not just the highest level set which would give you a lot more variety and to make a set that works for you and your intentions. Obviously XI is not a great example because you had gear swaps in combat and they are different games however it is the only example I can think of and seeing as it was SE's creation it is possible they can replicate it slightly, like they did in 1.0.
TL: DR - When SE expand this game with upcoming expansions and set a definitive cap they should focus on keeping everything the same sort of level but with different stat choices and different bonuses to allow us the choice of which set is more appropriately placed where, like they did in XI and instead of following the typical modern MMO stereotype of outclassing every gear set with new updates. This way you would get more choice with what to wear and will result in a lot less people looking identical.
