Farming Ettiquette

Etiquette for Farming:

As you know may or may not know at this point, farming is a key part of all MMOs, especially in FFXIV between levels 20-30 for a craft. With that said, it might be nice to lay out some unregulated rules are farming for the community at large. Albeit, they do not need to be followed, but at this point I have experienced many rude players in several areas which can make the farming even more unenjoyable and frustrating then it already is. Yet if people followed an unspoken set of guidelines when farming, it could make for a better environment.

Starting Your Farming:

1) Assess the area- If someone is already there, declare your intention to start farming.
2) Create a System- Try and delegate certain areas as "yours" and "mine." Or you can rotate kills. Come to some understanding as to not fight over mobs.
3) Change to Lower Class- Changing to a lower class will enable you to focus on one mob at a time, level up your lower class, and share mobs with other players.

Introduction of New Players:

1) If a new player enters the farming area, declares his intentions; try to make room for said player by following the previous steps.
2) If there is no more room for farming in the area, kind inform the player that the area is camped out. *Though it stinks, the new player should accept this and find a new area to move to.*

Friendly Rules:

1) When I am farming, I try to only grab one mob at a time, unless other players are claiming all the mobs in the area before killing their initial claim.
2) If a player is in a group of mobs, and is only fighting one of them at a time, I do not steal from their group, unless they have shown themselves to be an unfriendly player.
3) I inform other players who are farming nearby (when it is determined that that is what they are doing) of free mobs in my area in which they can grab to farm as well.
4) I lower my level to ensure that my kill time does not take less than 20 seconds per mob (if I am able.) Giving ample time for other players to claim targets.

Level 50 Players:

1) Level 50 players should go to the highest area in which they can farm the given materials and farm there, or follow the above mentioned rules. Most level 50 players I see run around in the low areas killing mobs 25-35 levels lower than their level, when they could go to another area where their is a higher mob that drops the same materials.

These are just some ideas to follow. I believe that they would make the game more enjoyable for all if more players followed them. Please take it as a suggestion.

Essentially, what people want is an F-you mentality. I'm fine with that. I can tag mobs just fine and 9 times out of 10, I'm not the one leaving the area. I'm just trying to make a better environment for all. Yet, the feedback is really... "Ah, screw it. You're in my way."

It reminds me of the "Thin Veil" mentality theory after an apocalypse hits. We are so doomed. LoL

Sounds like someone started tagging mobs you were grinding and got butthurt. Grow a pair and start tagging back.

Erm, claiming a monster will give you full exp. Anyone else that does 30%(I think) or more damage, no matter who claimed it, will get full exp as well.
It benefits both parties, so it's not a big deal in this game if someone attacks your target or if you attack someone else's target.

the problem is not the exp but the items you are farming for crafts. only the one who tag gets the items.

Farming is something that, even in XI (Which had one of the best, most co-operative MMO communities out there - see the BST code of conduct etc) followed the same rules as NM camping: May the best man win.

This does not mean be a dick to each other, but it does mean be competitive and not take it personally.

If I need 50 Raptor Skins, I won't fight level 49 mobs and be there for hours if I can one-shot level 25 mobs and get it done in minutes. I'm not there to level my job, there are far more efficient ways to do that, I'm there for mats.

I found a similar problem with Quests that need you to weaken a monster before using an item on it. There were about 5-6 people going for the same monster, which was a Bursting Balloon and Fallgourd Falls, and no one could really complete it easily because everyone would mob each monster. And the key items are pretty hard to have stick if the monster is being attacked my multiple people.

1) find XP camp... is lonely and nice. today i shall level

2) a wild party appears!

5) retry step 3 with no result..

6) charm big nasty Scorpion 10 levels above party

Good luck getting anyone to follow these rules. Not saying I'm against them yet at the same time with low drop rates and limited farming areas for said drops odds are I'm not going to be willing to take a few hours to a couple days of farming when I could potentially do it in an hour, two tops. That's why I'm not even bothering with crafting since I'm leveling Conjurer first. I'll wait till I have done a class with more (any) AoE.

What I hate the most is when people are in farming groups next to quest monsters I need to kill, and when they finally spawn the grind group kills it in seconds flat leaving me without any quest mobs to kill.

In reality one person will strip an area bare of a single mob type when farming. There isn't really a "your area" and "my area".

I tend to follow first come, first serve and generally try and find a completely different area if my ideal spot is already taken but sometimes there aren't other locations.

Also, if I'm on BRD, for example, I really hope people don't actually expect me to single target mobs down if they are within shooting distance of each other.

While we're on the subject of farming.. Is it possible to put non-usable objects (say iron ore, or raptor skins) on your hotbar? If you have an empty slot there it would be a good way of checking how many you have when you farm (the number next to the icon will increase) rather than periodically checking your inventory.

BST was there first? BST camp. PT there first? PT camp.

If not for the sake of manners then for the sake of survival. BSTs used to MPK when they were pissed off. There weren't that many camp overlaps anyway. Only BST (and some SMN) exp'd on bombs or slimes.

Of course you did check the /seacoms in the area before heading out there, didn't you?

You being rude aside it's virtually impossible for someone level 30 to get credit/full exp/drops from mobs when a 50 rolls through and starts farming over them, this is partially why the OP made said post I'm assuming, I've mostly seen it on legacy worlds though for obvious reasons, not because there's more fully capped people, but because most are rude.

The mobs respawn pretty damn fast in this game anyway, theres plenty of places you can farm. If someone annoys you in 1 place, find a new place.

A level 4 Bio lands just as quickly as a level 50 one. The 50 doesn't have an advantage in tagging a mob. They can hold a group of them longer and kill them faster, sure, but they have no advantage in claiming. You want full credit/exp/drops from a mob? Claim it.

then ask SE to change the game mechanic from "first come, first served" to "everyone that tags gets items" like other new MMOs use, along with lvl syncing everyone down to the lvl of the area

OR

ask SE to make drop rates for lvl 50 classes LOWER on mobs that are LOWER lvl then they are

if you dont want ppl to play the game the way the game IS, ask SE to change the game to how you WANT it to be

crying about random players is not going to make random players stop playing the game the way it IS

There's only two rules I follow when it comes to farming anything...
1. If it has what i need and i can kill it, i tag it.
2. I don't snipe (taking a mob just as another is getting to it)

There's not going to be any discussion, or areas to be decided on. Those wolves have the skins i want, and i'll not be sitting on my hands just because someone else thinks they're more entitled to the mobs than i am; In an MMO, you're entitled to what you can tag and kill.
