LEVELING guide: Get to 50 within a week guaranteed:

1. Move to a location that suits your level. (I've put map links at the bottom)
2. Press M to bring up your map. You will be a blue arrow icon on your screen.
3. Move your icon to a blue/purple circle called FATE.
4. Put an AOE ability on your hotkey 1 on hotbar 1.
5. Press said hotkey button numerous times while locked onto an enemy.
6. Repeat this simple process (steps 1-5) for a week or so and you will be 50. (remember you have to move to higher level locations as you progress).
7. *Most FATE players will wait in town next to a port stone waiting for FATEs to pop. I advise you do the same and run with the zerg/herd.

FATEs are the fastest, easiest, and cheapest form of exp. The majority are not multi stage but involve running from circle to circle whomping any and every mob you see (mind you, the mob must have a purple circle next to its icon. Make sure you whomp them with an AOE to maximize credit.

Why would developers put in this lame mechanic that allows you to mindlessly play whack-a-mole and zerg all day in PvE I don't know.

FATE exp should be nerfed. It is hands down the fastest form of exp available and by far the most mindless feeding frenzy in the history of MMORPGs. Prior games have had at least multi stages or weren't as much exp.

In the end:

FATEs = whack-a-mole EZ mode. Please nerf

Sidenote: Yes I like the game, but this is the one major aspect of the game that clearly needs to be adjusted. Graphics, story, and music are all great.

OP is spot on. This FATE system is one of the worst ideas for leveling imaginable.

It's simple- you spam AoE and hope you tag as many targets as possible.

Rinse and repeat until 50.

I totally agree. When I qeue up for a dungeon on my CNJ, about half the time I get people who, at level 20+, still don't know not to stand in AOEs. Also, with people levelling so quickly on FATES, what is the point of class quests anymore? People are just levelling their characters on low level equipment and then running back to their guild at a higher level and completing all of their class quests at once.

ARR is a lot better than 1.0, for sure, but I think that this is something that detracts from the original intent of the creators. Alone how many people are already running around on their magiteck mount is discerning.

I think there is quite the imballance with EXP now between FATEs, dungeons, and levequests. Especially levequests, the exp is so bad from them compared to FATE grinding and even dungeon grinding, especially if you already have a job at 50. This provides an exp boost to FATEs and dungeon mobs, but not to Leve quest rewards. And once you clear the main storyline on one class, you lose the ability to quest grind. This leaves you with 3 choices, and FATE is so much better with such higher exp rewards, unless you are rolling through dungeons in a premade, its much better to just join a group and form a Death Ball to roll through zones.

You dont know what Square meant to happen when they added in FATEs. You can keep pretending to speak for them though if you would like.

the OPs posts are so sensationalized that it's not even funny. Keep talking like pugs are NEVER undergeared in other MMOs right? RIGHT?

All I see here is people complaining that tanks are smart and wont carry them through dungeons when they can get their XP elsewhere and not have to depend on you derping up a group of mobs

I agree with this thread. FATEs give too much experience for what they are. They either need to give less experience or scale differently so they are harder for large groups.

One of the problems I think is that most fates happen in too small of an area. Too many players are crowding in an area the size of the head of a pin. In most active time events in GW2 or Rift you have more room to spread out in. For example in GW2 if mobs are attacking a town there will be attacking at 2 to 3 points, so the mass of players can spread between them.

They also need to spawn more mobs which have more health and do larger aoe attacks when the amount of players participating in the fate gets higher. I think this should be the preferred route instead of nerfing the experience that fates give. Just make them more difficult.

Right now, once a really large zerg forms, fates aren't fun at all. There is no chance of failure and everyone is just trying to tag mobs instead of kill them.

I lvl slower because I can't get in the game more then half the time lol I my self enjoy the instances and doing my quests if people want to mindlessly grind have at it to each there own, fallow the sheepeople if you want .. Bhaaa

bah lost interest in this game when i saw a level 23 fate grind Svara flight a couple times and became level 30 in less than 3 hours. keep this easy crap for the herbs

Fate is a great feature for when your catching up on a level or 2 between missions. I rather enjoy it. I only participate in Fate if its on my way to some quest of if I need to level up for the next mission. Who cares if XP is high let people enjoy it however they feel comfortable. :) Lets not get Avatar envy cause someones level is high. :/

Meh. I'm 42, would probably be 50 already in my main (with several others at 15 or 20) if i hadn't had to take a couple days off and fight the log in error. I mostly did quests and dungeons once. Rarely did any fate grinding, only really did them if i was in the area for something else. You can hit 50 in a week doing quests.

Fate grinding parties are the biggest annoyance imo. There is a group on my server near the 38 area, has been the same people complaining if someone not in their party starts it and they throw insults at them. I've seen the same names for a few days now. The only people not gold selling that i've blacklisted.

I think the fairest method would be to add diminishing returns to FATEs. Make them great if you run into one while leveling or traveling, but not something you'd just wander between doing for hours on end. I'd hate for FATEs to be nerfed entirely, though, as they're a rare chance to see complete strangers pitch together to beat something hard.

The instant spawn abuse needs to get fixed, though. That one is clearly unintentional.

And better dungeon rewards/xp too, yeah. It makes no sense to do most dungeons for anything other than the first required run, now.

Its not my opinion you can be 50 in 4-5 days if you do FATEs, its a fact. You get 12000 experience every 3 minutes a FATE spawns, and the FATE zergs take them down in less than a minute. That's not an opinion. I've been seeing it since beta. Dungeon exp is around 25K for a 25-40 minute run. You can make 12K every 3-5 minutes with FATEs. Those are facts.

FACT: FATEs are by far the fastest method of getting the largest amount of exp.

If there was a button to ding you 1 level everytime you pressed it would you care if other people had access to it and everyone was insta level 50 within 49 key presses? I can't agree with this more. Although I'd love to level to 50 easily, I can't because I can't even see fates. Sometimes I've been 20k or 10k shy of a level and unable to do a fate that just spawned next to me or I get absurdly low exp since everyone thrashes it so quickly.

Also I was playing in Brayflox and a dps on my party had 3 pieces of level 15 gear. And had at least 5 equip slots empty. None of his gear was close to his level and he hardly knew what he was doing. He was attacking sleeping enemies straying To far and taking aggro and causing the goblins to die and lose chests for the team.

They need to reduce the frequency, increase HP of monsters, allow an option to render people invisible during fates or at all times if they aren't in your party and change the awards for fates, not based on only your dmg contribution but suited for your class. Tanks could be enmity generated and dmg, healers could be healing and dmg, and dps just dmg they've done.

As someone who has used FATEs to grind to level 50, I have to agree with OP. The amount of experience points gained is just over the top. It's just ridiculous how players grind to 50 by spamming level 40 events. Of course at level 45, there are better and faster areas to farm, but most players just tag along the zerg train, getting free exp. Having to rely on the duty finder to find groups, because my friends haven't caught up with level yet, I've often encountered players that don't understand simple mechanics in dungeon runs. Of course they don't. Many of them have never played an MMORPG that requires more than autoattacking according to my experience. That's where the storyline dungeons come in to prepare those players, yet those are getting skipped due to FATEs just being so advantageous for fast leveling.

Um. All of you saying FATEs need nerfed. Two problems.

1. There aren't enough quests to get you from 1-50 without grinding -something- especially in the high 30s and then the total 0 quests from 47-49. (I just did it, I would know.) edit: yeah there's exploring and your hunting log but again. That'll barely be a level, maybe 2.

2. Similar to problem 1, how do you go about leveling an ENTIRE other class without the main story and side quests? Do 6 leves once a day? For what, a year?! Instances are only decent really if you have rest xp and that goes bye bye quick. And normal mobs don't give squat for the amount it takes to level even in the teens.

Now I'm no fan of grinding FATEs all day, I hated it, but ATM there is no alternative so...

I do agree though that you should get nothing if the FATE is way above your level(like more than 5) That's just stupid. Also if you're having problems getting golds, join a party. As a cnj/whm who's first aoe was 45, this is how you do it. I could heal. Never had to touch the monsters, and I'd still get gold.

Why don't they just nerf it and go back to skill chains... i leveled extremely fast in 1.0 before and after yoshi made his changes. Also leves gave more experience in 1.0... don't know why he nerfed them.

I think I've already explained this, that just because you need a mode of gaining exp to level alt jobs you don't have to have a superfast 4 day method of doing it.

To make leveling of an alt possible WITHOUT uber FATE exp or storyline quests, as already stated you can:

1. Increase dungeon exp
2. Increase grind/chain exp/mob exp
3. Lower Fate exp & frequency
4. Higher leve daily quota or more rewarding.
5. Make FATEs mult-staged (for fun and depth) and requiring more than AOE whompings

This would slow down the 4-5 day level cap FATE zerging period needed to ding a alt 50. So there, there's your method of dinging 50 without super maxed uber fast uber high FATE exp.

Remember gamers will always flock to the fastest mode of exp delivery, especially if its this big of a discrepancy. So just flatten out the discrepancy, I'm not saying eliminate it completely. So I guess people would be able to ding 50 in I dunno, 2 weeks instead of 1? haha, even that is ridiculously short.

You don't need to think that OH MY!! there's no other way I can ding 50 unless I have FATES!!!!! The game would be a lot different if FATE exp was half or a quarter of what it was. More people would do dungeons, grind, form groups, leve's etc. Honestly, what ever form became minimally advantageous they would take it, but there wouldnt be a huge zerg in town running from point to point nonstop 24 hours a day. Yes I know they are grouped in their FATE, but again, read my OP about the mindlessness of FATEs.

I leveled my toon in GW2 1-80 in less than a week, by joining a 100 man zerg in WvW every day. When I hit 80, I already have enough karma to buy 10 slots of exotic gear for my toon. So yeah, Fate is one of the fastest way to level your toon, but not the most mindless feeding frenzy in the history of MMORPGs.

I like FATEs.. they add atmosphere, and are nice to jump into while you are travelling and notice them around. Occasionally, when in town I might notice an attack, and run to help. All pleasant, and the rewards quite nice.

However, it does seem odd that if someone chooses to focus on just this, that they can gain levels so very quickly. To the point, that it diminishes the value of other aspects of XP gaining. Getting XP from Hunting Logs, Quests, Dungeons now becomes a 'token' gesture for the effort, rather than a reasonable means of leveling. And as the logs empty and the quests disappear, the choices become fewer.

I think the issue is not that FATEs give too much XP. I think the issue is that by focusing on FATEs one can ignore all other means of XP gaining. And the question then really is, was this intentional or is it an error in design?

To me, it matters not one whit if someone wishes to focus on FATEs. It does matter to me that when it becomes my turn to level up a 3rd/4th job, I will have to repeat Dungeons a lot for small XP, or FATEs a lot for massive XP, rather than a happy medium.

I miss 'old school' XP camps ^.^;

Fates are just destroying the game. There are people who did nothing else than fates and have no clue how to play in a real party. I must admit I also leveled from 47 to 50 with fates but only because there was nothing else left. I did all the quests there were and I finished my hunting log. Later there are fates that can give you 150k per fate if you have a great party with a lot of AOE damage.

SE is so anti-change its not even funny. I'm all for them fixing the -other- xp methods believe me, those 2 days of FATEs only made me wanna just quit but stop telling them to nerf one without providing meaningful alternatives. I don't wanna have to grind more than I already did... Yeah yeah it's an mmo deal with it, well they chose to change it to a quest based xp system so it's their fault they didn't make every quest repeatable or have thousands of them to level just one job let alone 5-6. If I'm supposed to play a new character for each job, get rid of the damn job system, or fix the stupid obvious gameplay problem. And instance grinding is just as bad if not worse, I don't care if it makes better players, that's what FCs are for. PUGs always have and always will suck. Just the nature of the randomness. I'm sorry you're getting total clueless players but instance grinding would screw over anyone wanting to level a DD class... So what's left? Unlimited leves or the ff11 method? First is super tedious but it would work if you wanna bore everyone to death, and the second I'd love to see comeback but those days seem long gone in MMOs and the world of instant gratification.

Rather than giving copious amounts of experience for people zerg rushing FATE events, how about they swap the XP gained for some kind of special FATE Tokens... those tokens could then be exchanged in a major town for special items.

Get rid of all xp from fate and deliver only Grand Company tokens and that's it.

When I bought the CE of that lovely game, after playing it since beta 3, I never thought I was going to search how to cancel my sub just a few days after the release because of that FATE disaster.

I have no problem with people doing what they like but the problem here is it influences my pleasure and gaming.
Dungeons queues are empty, a tank and a healer, naturally more oriented on team play can't find any dps.

So for the moment, I decide to go back to my ex MMORPG till a solution is found.
I'm sad to see all my hopes in FF XIV ruined by the FATE problem.
I can bear non being able to connect, ALT+TAB crashes, the lack of quests, many usual features, net code problem on AoE, lag, et cetera, but this is the ruin of team play and the shrine of all other aspects of the game that received so many efforts, like dungeons, hunt log, ... what ever.

The problem is that, even if you take away EXP from FATE, the majority of the players will look for the next best way to get exp quickly and go for that (or they'll just stop playing completely because it's too hard/slow to level up now).

I do think the exp reward from FATEs are overboard. Giving a boost to exp in dungeons is one way to encourage players to use those too. They take longer to do, and as such should have an exp rate similar to the same number of FATE that can be completed in that time. Leves definitely need a boost as well, because they are almost a waste of time in their current form.

At the very least, the main ways of gaining exp need to balanced with respect to each other, thus allowing players to choose how they want to level rather than be forced to grind away at the best one.

Whatever does happen in the end, one thing needs to be kept in mind by the developers of the content: [the majority of] players will always find the easiest/quickest route (i.e. path of least resistance mentality) if one exists. It's human nature to (ab)use any kind of exploit they can, especially if it makes their task easier. It's always about the end result, and whilst I'm sure Yoshida means for people to get to the end game in a decent amount of time, I'm not sure a day or two was the intended rate.

The FATE system should be more difficult. I've been in a few larger boss-type fights (granted only in the lvl 20s) where virtually no one took any damage. They need to increase the difficulty/damage/vitality of the MOB according to the number of players joined in the FATE or something to that effect.

the problem with fate is that mobs are too low of a lvl sure they kept in mind making mobs 1 mybe 2 lvls below what the lvl of the fate is but they then went on to give 5 lvls synch meaning on lvl 20 fate with lvl 18 mobs you have lvl 25 people hammering down on them, as they are normal hp mobs they go down quick so its easier exp for people to spam them, what they need to do is either raise the mob lvl so that they are about 2 or so lvls higher then require lvl for fate or give the mobs about 50% or so HP/Def boost that way they last longer and people who are playing those fate get to work for them.

right now fates around Quarrymill give 20k+ xp each for lvl 28-30 fates in those all you have to do is claim a mob cast few heals and possibly raise one player if needed to get your full 20k xp, the only thing that can come close to this is higher lvl dungeon runs with xp/chain boots where you are getting about 500+xp a pop on mobs, but since that is only 4 player dungeon run most people avoid it since it means they have to do alot more work and learn to play their class properly else they keep getting killed.

as for the megitek mount thing yes people have those because its alot easier to go through the storyline as lvl 50 then it is to lvl a class with the mainstoryline, in ffxi you could tell who was a good player and who knew how to play the game all you had to do was look at their rank in those early years when you saw a rank 10 you know you were getting someone who put the effort in their jobs, but here you can pretty much get power lvled to lvl 50 not cos there are power lvlers in game but its so easy to get max xp in the fate.

as for the NM fates they are really easy as well as I have tanked them on SCH being able to negate the damage and side stepping on special attacks makes it quite easy to tank, they really need to make the NM tougher as the current NMs have same stats as base mobs in fate only they have higher hp and dmg on special attacks but since they are quite easy to avoid it all boils down to how long you can poke the mob till it dies.

today i started leveling a 2nd class , while LFP on my main....after hunting log....what ? FATES ....because dungeons arent worth the wait on low lvls ,and im already LFP with my 50. so no way i will put lfp on my low lvl char

so its hunting log and FATES and thats it...because leves are "ok" but way better used on crafting (or bored)

The problem is when people scramble to level 50 through FATEs and never learn how to play their jobs. There's no point being level 50 if you don't know how to play.

I think I'm going to use this method to get my mage jobs up to 50 so I can stop caring about it. :p

I work in the medical profession, my hours are 18 hour shifts and very little down time, if I were to get on 1-2 times a week and not be able to get a few levels then I would grow tired of the game and never see the light at the end of the tunnel, it took me 3 years to get 1 lvl 50 in 1.0 with the hours I have available to me. a lot of the comments in this feed are all based on their personal experience of the game and how they should see it work, but have any of you stopped to think about the people who want to enjoy this game for small 1-2 hours windows a week without having to spend their life trying to achieve level 50?

Yoshi said in his mission statement that he wants people to have fun. Nerf fates to a point where they don't give much exp then you may as well just stay in the city and queue for dungeons all day, or run out do a days worth of fates and cap your seals... sounds like a great game, i'm glad you guys didn't design it.

While what you said is true, you're committing the same crime you're accusing people of doing. You're only looking at how it affects you. Sure, it's nice that you get to level 50 fairly quickly but then what? You quit the game? You join an endgame group and compete against others that used other methods to get there? And what about the people that have more time to play? Do they have to suffer the people that would abuse this system just so you and the few that play in a similar schedule like you can get level 50 quickly?
Don't bother rushing to endgame because you need more than 1 to 2 hours a week to do anything after level 50. Enjoy the journey there instead because chances are, you'll just quit after 50 when you have nothing to do there anyway. If it's not something you want to do, maybe you shouldn't be devoting your spare time to this and instead enjoy other things in life? After all, this is just one game out of many out there.

Edit: The only point to doing fates right now is the exp gain. They don't seem all that entertaining.

Sometimes... getting to 50 (or top of the server) is all people live for.

I must be doing something seriously wrong (please let me know what I need to do to get crazy exp in Fates). I've never seen a 20k exp from any fate. I'm lvl33 at the moment. I've done full FATE parties and I'm an archer so I've sat there and just spammed my DoT on every single mob (trying to tag them first), do my AoE... The only time I've come close was on a couple ones that just give a lot out, like 13-15k. Those give out that much regardless though...

If they nerf the exp on FATES, I hope they retune exp on other activities. If not, come your 3rd+ class it's going to be really painful to level.
