How to Help Tanks in Dungeons 101.

Hey guys! I posted something over on the Lodestone because I wasn't able to make a thread here sooner, but essentially it contained a few basic tricks as to how to help tanks out. It was recommended that I post it here, and so without further ado, I hereby present to you basic tank-helping skills 101!

*Note: Please read the edit on the bottom. The summary of it is that this is only an effective and/or proper guide if you're under level 30. If you're above level 30, I strongly recommend looking into more in-depth guides regarding dungeon strategies and general rules.

Let's start with something that's essential: Do your best to attack the target the tank is currently attacking. Tanks have Flash to make sure that any slip-ups or occasional AoE attacks you throw out don't get you killed, but our MP is limited! If we start to use Flash too much, we have to stop using Savage Blade and switch to Riot Blade to regenerate our MP, which means we're generating less enmity (threat) than if we were to use Savage Blade. If there's a large group of MoBs, throwing DoTs on all six or seven of them and spamming AoEs is bound to cause trouble! If you're having trouble targeting the monster the tank is attacking, it's completely acceptable to ask him to mark the targets in order of which you should be killing them.

Secondly - and this is for Arcanists/Summoners - but please don't use your Topaz Carbuncle. When I'm tanking three-four (and more) MoBs, I'm not looking at each individual MoB to make sure they're all looking at me. I check my enemy list. If it shows one (or more) of the MoBs isn't attacking me, then I have to check to make sure it isn't attacking any of you guys, make sure the Carbuncle doesn't die and/or the enmity goes to another player in the dungeon, etc - long story short: As a tank, I want all the MoBs on me. I'll be using moves to increase my defense and enmity, and the healer can worry about the rest. If you're doing damage, focus on doing damage.

Lastly, and this relates back to my first point, but please follow the order in which the targets are marked. If I target the MoBs, it's to make the dungeon easier for everyone. You're not a hero because you killed a dungeon MoB by yourself. All you do is make it that much harder for me or any other tank to keep its aggro. And if I have to switch to a MoB marked #3 while the MoB marked #1 is getting hammered by everyone else, you bet I'm going to lose its aggro. Please, please, PLEASE follow the order in which targets are marked.

Other than that, have fun! Ask questions if you have to. But if you follow those three basic steps, you're already yalms ahead of what's considered a bad party member.

I've also started putting up videos of myself tanking - they're essentially videos of my first or second run in dungeons on ARR. I want to put up more, but with college and login restrictions, that's been a little difficult, so there's only two videos for now. Edit: It seems some people are misinterpreting my post as a sort of basic guide for any dungeon. Let me be abundantly clear that it's not. There are many, many, many tactics, tricks, tips, and other general rules that can apply to running dungeons. At the end of the day, most if not all of them will make a dungeon run more efficient by some degree. This is not a guide to learning those tips and tricks at a lower level. This is not a guide for dungeons at level 50 - in fact, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone over 25 (30 at most) simply because there is a lot more to dungeons that needs to be examined at that point in the game. This is a guide for people who are level 15 or 18 and looking to do a dungeon like Satasha Seagrot or Copperbell Mines; this is a guide to encourage people who don't want to do a dungeon because they're afraid they'll goof up the run.

Hey I know marking is important, but sometimes I find players need to stop focus marking over their actual role. I was in a dungeon and the Healer kept trying to call the shots by marking every monster, but I he lost focus on healing me and with the little HP pool GLDs I died.

Hm, odd. I personally don't think the healer should be marking the targets - the tank should be doing that, if anyone (DDs [DPS] would also work), but the healer should be worrying about the party, not the MoBs. The MoBs are the job of the tank/DDs. :)

Or as I tell every PT that I join, assist me by following the "alphabet" thats listed after every monsters' name. Usually you'll go through 3 sets of the alphabet before finishing the dungeon but as long as one knows the alphabet {honestly its rather sad how many don't seem too though...le sigh} then it shouldn't be an issue. The only exception to this rule is if there is a mage or 'other' mob that does more damage, and should be put down first, but again thats rare and not really needed, because if every mob is on the tank, then the healer only has to focus on keeping me alive and should have plenty of MP as long as said tank is using all their +def abilities...

You need to up your tanking skill then, cause you should be looking at thrice ~ the mobs, the mob list and the aggro meters on the party list. If everyone follows the tank by assisting us and going by letter, then there should very rarely be the need to pull mobs off other PT members. {At least I have no issue holding 4+ mobs without them ever leaving my side, if everyone else is doing what is needed}

I do concur that Topaz Carbuncle is never needed when I'm tanking, it just messes with the hate meter! Use Emerald for more DPS instead!

Thanks again Sheer San. Ok Khalus San, can you please explain the alphabet reference? Are you saying each enemy spawned is given a alpha numerical rating, from A-Z and can be targeted in turn based on that? When did my first Dungeon as a tank, the Live Help page started spamming in the middle of the screen and I had to talk to the team instead of reading it..i had to turn it off before reading all of its pages so it was NOT saved into the log of such help menus and I have not been able to find it anywhere online. So i missed some of the instructions. I did my best and we made it thru, but any tips such as your nice ones it would help a lot to detail what you are saying. thanks again.

As a DPS I'm shocked at how little anyone uses marks. I generally take it upon myself to mark the tanks current target for them. They have enough to worry about. I'm prerty sure you can go into the a signs tab and drag a hotkey to your bar for quicker marking too. Lets face it some people don't have a decade of mmo experience under their belt so explaining something or doing it yourself goes a long way.

After the name of every mob is a letter, starting with A and following through the entire alphabet til it repeats. In most dungeons you'll go through the alphabet 3 times. Just tell everyone to assist the tank by following the alphabet. Mob group one will be A, B & C, the next group of mobs are D, E, F, etc etc etc! Don't need additional marks when they already are, however, as I said earlier there are exceptions to the order killed based on type of mob.

Advanced marking could certainly be helpful in harder instances later in the game or to keep track of a tank during fates, or whatnot, but just standard trash in dungeons thus far its never needed!

I was using an arbitrary number - the underlying point was that it's easier to quickly check the MoBs in the UI elements (enemy list, aggro meters) than it is to actually see them all around me. :p

Again, this was more aimed at lower level dungeons. For example, using your alphabet rule may prove much more efficient in certain scenarios than going through and marking the targets, but for people who are new to dungeons, it's much easier to see a giant "1" over the MoBs head.

So I had thought this would be obvious, but I guess there are people who maybe don't notice it's a thing; but I played tank for the very first time in an MMO (minus minor WAR and NIN sub job leveling in XI) during one of the early Beta phases when they made GLA available. What I noticed as I got to around Toto-Rak, was that if I marked my current target and was good about switching targets as the mob was about to die, the runs became a lot smoother and most (but not all...) DPS figure it out and "attack the one with the big X above its head!".

For those that don't know, there are Marks that you can use to mark targets. The really cool thing, however, is that (like with the Emotes list) you can literally click the mark you want to use and drag it to your hotbar where you can then keybind it for fast and efficient mob targeting. I've found you really only need the one mark and using it to mark only your current target is enough. As a bonus, the big target itself can actually be clicked to allow easier manual targeting (at least for PC players) when you are trying target a mob inside a big pack of them. I'm sure an /assist command (which I don't know off the top of my head) would work similarly.

I now play with a friend who plays WAR and I play SCH. He marks targets as well. It's something all tanks (or at least SOMEONE in the group, but preferably the tank) should be doing.

From what I can find on the internet, you hit square with your target highlighted, and it'll bring up an option to mark the targets. From there, it'll give you a list of available marks. The marks can be put in a hotbar to quickly mark targets.

I was scared to try tanking on PS3 but maybe it won't be so bad now.

Actually I almost never have a problem with DPS taking my aggro... what's KILLING me is the friggen healers. FAR too much WoW mentality to be anything but aggro whores.

Im down 100 HP, so let's chain spam a 300+ HP heal... It's pretty much at this point Im bashing my face into the keyboard and crying myself to sleep.

Healers - Take it from an experienced tank... if your pulling aggro... it's NOT your tank's fault. It's yours. Your overhealing by such a ridiculous amount no amount of threat generation in the entire FFXIV universe is going to get it back.

If the poo hits the rotating blades.. then sure, go nuts on the healing, and hope for the best. But in FFXIV.. keeping the tank at 100% hp the entire fight is NOT needed. This isn't WoW where the tank can do it half asleep by pressing 1 button. It's work, and your making it harder on everyone by getting spam heal happy.

I agree it is hard at times when the healers keep us TOO healthy. But lets work with it and I try to give a little direction to the group when i start, not to tell others how to play but i suggest a few guidelines. Never hurts to communicate. That way everyone may have some good hints. It is hard to keep the attention of many of the enemies of this game, and that is by design I am sure to make us work harder, some run around and are hard to target, some just refuse to stay made at me,..but careful work can help a lot. Thanks again for the input by eveyone and do remember to explain slang terms that new players may not understand, we are not all veteran MMO players of this type and this is a great chance to help others learn.

As a Marauder/Gladiator (tank) I mark my targets before the pull even with trash. Almost every time at least one person is attacking some other mob, and a couple times now after I mark one, and even before I get off my opener (Tomohawk + Flash) every single party member starts attacking something else. This is after I explain the purpose of the mark.

Also, I second the topaz carbuncle caveat.

Let's just hope people read this. I'm kind of tired of explaining things and having people tell me to stfu instead of listening. A few basic guidlines make a tanks job so much easier, and the easier it is for us the easier it's ultimately going to be for everyone else.

Speaking from experience a successful Healer isn't just watching the HP bars. They need to be just as aware as the Tank to what's coming, perhaps more so. Frankly it's usually best to let the player with the most experience with a dungeon, regardless of their role, to do the marking.

Edit: I'm not an all-knowing tank, as much as I wish I was. I am not some e-celebrity jumping from MMO to MMO to master my tanking skills. What I am is just another player trying to pass off some general points that will get lower-level players through a dungeon without a problem. I'm aware many of you here are veteran MMO players and have refined dungeon strategies that would blow me right out of the water for all three roles (DD, Healer, Tank). I am more than happy to learn from you and discuss potential strategies - especially if I'm ever in a group with you, but for all intents and purposes, this topic is focused at getting extremely basic to-do's down for successful dungeon runs at lower levels.

At the end of the day, I'm just another guy on an MMO trying to help out people who are new to dungeons. I don't mean to disregard anyone's wisdom, but this topic isn't exactly the time or place - with that in mind, I'm always keeping an eye on the "Tank Roles" forum, so if anyone comes up with a brilliant strategy for higher-level dungeons (or even a sort of introduction to high-level dungeon runs), you can be sure that I'll be reading it. ;)

If you've taken aggro from a monster, run to the tank. The tank can't tank it off of you if you run it away from him. It sometimes is better to be a close range ranged class :P.

This may be one of the most useful threads on the New Player list ..thanks again...lots of good advice here. Sheer San your last post is very good, many of us are new to Tanking and want to do well and are afraid of messing up. This attitude of helping without trying to make us instant experts is just right. It is very nice when things go well. I died twice in my first dungeon as a tank but i kept coming back and the team were nice about it and we made it thru. I will keep trying hard and these tips have been invaluable. Like i said, i missed the in game live tips, because it started spamming right when i had to start the dungeon and i could not open all of the pages so i lost it, it never saved to my library of tips. I hope to find it somwhere online at some point but for now these tips have been a huge help.

Mark or have someone mark who knows what to mark - right click on the life bars of the foes that appear on the left side of the screen
Watch the colour key for Aggression from the foes...red for fully aiming at YOU, orange for getting there and green for Not at All
Realize that the Foes are ranked A-Z for each room of the dungeon and you can target them that way
Try to keep the Tank NOT fully healed so that they can pull aggression from the bosses and foes
Try to encourage people to target the marked foes
Bring Enemies TO the Tank - if you get attacked run TOWARD the Tank so they can grab the foe from you.

I only used to use 2 marking icons but a kind party from Diabolos that I met via DF suggested (not yelled) that I use 3 marks instead. I like to think I'm a pretty average tank, maybe even decent, but you can always learn something new.

My biggest gripe is when Arcanists/Summoners don't tell their pet to attack manually, very annoying in a dungeon in the 30s where killing Wesps quickly is of absolute utmost importance. You have a skill called "Sic", please put it on your hotbar if it makes it easier for you to hit, sometimes I need you to change target.

Another problem I come across is players who try to lead the dungeon who are not tanks. I can not express how much it irritates me when a player runs ahead while I am leading or am waiting for my resources to recover. As a PS3 player it is hard to type in chat to keep people from running ahead while I need to wait a minute.

thanks. during the short time i played i couldnt fulfill my role as a tank. Mostly due to the fact my party kept rushing the enemy.
When this happened we were scattered and ended up running around rescuing teammates as flash did not have much of an effect.
Ended up using shield bash to stun and party members were able to retreat and re-focus. Secondly i was able to regenerate TP fast enough to perform
my skills. i was so close to abandoning that party.

Another useful tip to look out for is you can see which mobs links by hovering your cursor/selecting a mob. You'll see a yellow line that shows which mobs link with what. Some mobs are stand-alone (Usually pathing mobs), so you can pull them without linking the other mobs. I usually pull the pathing mob first, so I don't have to worry about them link with another group of mobs later. You'll start seeing these mobs in Copperbell Mines, but it becomes so crucial to carefully pull pathing mobs starting in Haukke Manor. This link indicator is so useful and should be taken advantage of because even if a mob is 25 yalms away from the mob you're pulling and doesn't look like they'll link, there's a chance they're a part of the group you're pulling. Never hurts to take a few seconds to check.

They're going to get a dose of reality in Stone Vigil if they keep that up. I always tell my group when running that dungeon to NEVER run ahead of me, just because of spawn traps, environmental traps, and pathing mobs.

This a thousand times!! I have been in dungeons as a tank, keeping the mobs occupied when new mobs come along and party members take them on only to of course get the aggro. They then run around (probably screaming OMG OMG) and I'm like "come here I cant chase after you and keep these occupied".

There are situations where Topaz Carbuncle or Titan-Egi can be a great help to tanks and I would have them summoned for the purpose of assisting the tank

2 cases being

Last boss in the Sastasha dungeon and the first boss in Cutter's Cry

Both of these bosses at about 50% of HP will spawn lots of adds

In both these dungeons I have had the tank turn over the main boss over to me to hold for the remainder of the fight while the tank holds adds

A note to any ACN or SNM reading, this a few tips

1) This only works with Topaz Carbuncle or Titan-Egi and having a Clued up tank

2) At the start of the fight send it pet using SIC command at the same time as the tank DON'T use a spell to send the pet in

3) Keep an eye on your pets hate and heath meters as well as the bosses health bar

4) At the point that the tank turns the boss over to you then STOP DPS'ing on the boss as you will needed to save MP and only focus on healing you pet

If the tank is okay with it, then it's fine (if a tank doesn't want a Topaz carbuncle out, it's usually best to keep it away), but there are alternatives - for example, in Satasha, it may be easier to have a ranged DD keep an eye on the grates and interact with them whenever the water starts to bubble. I was in a group where both DDs were ranged, so those two and the healer spread out to three of the four grates while I held the boss in the middle. One DD had to keep an eye on two grates, but otherwise, the run was phenomenal.

However, that situation depends on the preference of the party members as well as the classes involved. Obviously if the DDs that were in my party were melee DDs, it would have been much harder to have them keep an eye on the grates. At the end of it all, I suppose it comes down to the situation - there's more than one "right" way to do it. :)

Thank you for this. I want to emphasize the "PLEASE DO NOT USE TOPAZ CARBUNCLES" part. Seriously, they completely mess up my tanking because I can never seem to divert the mob back to me to manage the group properly. It messes up enmity so that when someone starts using AoEs the mob that's attacking the carbuncle strays towards the party which makes me have to bring the entire group of mobs toward them to retrieve it. :/ Cue more AoEs and the fact that I now have to spam Flash decreasing my MP, and as a result I have to use Riot Blade to get it back, screwing up the enmity of the mob group entirely, which creates a huge mess.
This is just the experience I've had with Topaz Carbuncles and dungeons so far as a tank.

Not to sound like a dick but i dont get all the tanking issues. Ive played my fair share of mmos and this is one of the easier to tank IMO. Be in a dungeon tanking groups of mobs while checkin something on my phone and puffin some trees...and still not lose aggro on even one mob. Seeing like 4+ pages on this nearly made my brain explode

My tank friends would want me to mention not to follow this blindly. They've had to deal with way too many people who ignore their target marks because of similar advice. If a tank has numbered the targets you should kill them in that order.

Yes, please don't make us this game's version of huntards. You queued as DPS so use your DPS pet. The tank and healer don't need you interfering with agro and nobody wants you gimping your DPS. The yellow pikachu is for soloing only.

Don't expect that to work past low levels. Starting at the last boss in Brayflox a pet can't tank a dungeon. It'll stand in stuff and it'll die almost immediately.

General use of Topaz Carbuncle or Titan-Egi can mess things up and for the main part of the dungeon the ACN should really use either Emerald Carbuncle, Ifrit-Egi or Garuda-Egi. I'm just saying that on a few of the dungeon bosses Topaz Carbuncle and Titan-Egi can be a great help. it does how ever require the tank, ACN and healer to work together.

I have managed to help tank the 1st boss in Cutter's Cry which is no mean feet. Cutter's Cry being well outside of low levels. ACN pet tanking is not suitable for all boss encounters.

I've resorting to explaining how I run the dungeon before we get started: {gotta love it when a dps runs ahead and dies during the explanation too...}

#1 always assist me
#2 stay behind me, never run ahead and aggro/pull mobs
#3 if you pull aggro and run away I won't help, you will die!

Best part about #3, most healers concur and we let them die until they learn not to do it...rofl! And if they leave, big deal, there are a plethora of other DPS waiting to get in on the action!

Absolutely, do not use Topaz or Titan, ever, they are for solo and more dps is better!

And as long as everyone follows the #1 rule "assist the tank" I have no problems holding the boss and 4+ mobs. Also don't ever engage new adds to boss fights until I have them under control, it just causes havoc!
