[dev1002] No quest cutscenes no motivation to play.

So no cutscenes in this patch's quests either. I'll log off for another month to see if these quests can ever live up to the ones in XI. Let's be honest here most of XI quest cutscenes aren't that complicated to produce few emotes (these are already animated in the game) and dramatic camera pans, that's it. It also seems like the quest givers are nailed to the ground for all eternity and can't even walk around when they explain their business.

This is a side-note but the sub-par writing of these quests doesn't give us any insight to the story and people of Eorzea. Did XI quest writers die or get fired?

to be honest the quests with cs in ffxi wasn't that big of a list.

and honestly this is why I nicely put don't expect them. Not gloating ok. I think it stinks also. But give it time they are just scrap quests.

You make it sound like most FFXI's side quest had cut scenes... There are more quest with CS's in this game now then FFXI had until CoP released.

Quoted for truth, a majority of the quests in XI didn't have a CS unless it was part of the main storyline.

quests with cs SOB quests but they was linked to the windy rank missions like a side story.

rest were job quests or spell quests but most side quests didn't have CS. trust me i was a quest ho in ffxi.

I was hoping they did add some for ppl but it be better off not to expect them

off topic I am slowly getting tired of all the "nerd raging" after every patch...
but as i keep saying no one gonna be happy : / I just hope ps3 out soon. or at least a basic release date

Someone doesn't remember FFXI very well (or maybe didn't play FFXI at all).

A LOT of the quests in FFXI didn't have *any* cutscenes. Most of them had just text.

For your information, without even counting the main storyline, this game has *more* quests with cutscenes than FFXI had for the first couple years. 51 of them to be precise.

Don't dismiss them so easily. The new ones are really good. Great writing, great variety and unexpected. Some of them even allow 2 more players to join you in it.

As we expected, the previous ones were just to introduce the sidequest system. To build the groundwork. These are some nice quests. And let's be honest. Nearly any MMO has cutscenes in their quests.

There's one where you learn that a lalafell pushed an old lady to her death from the Coloseum stands XD
And a lalafell guard telling you that the monsters drop turds bigger than him XD

I've played XI enough to know most quests do have cutscenes. Many of them are really good ones too even though they're not missions. I see your argument about CoP but with all due respect wasn't that natural progression when they learned to make quest better and to be more interesting shouldn't that progress in quality carry over to XIV right away instead of warping back to the beginning when things were bland and uninteresting?

I've seen this XI didn't have cutscenes during quests argument before and it literally leaves me speechless because I've played the game I've seen the non-mission cutscenes are you trying to convince somebody else who hasn't played the game or is there something else I'm not getting here? They do have cutscenes I can't play a game for over 2 years and imagine things. And I'm not talking about storyline missions I've seen way more quest cutscenes than mission cutscenes during my time in XI.

Another thing, the new sidequest all point towards the empire attacking / prophecies that we heard from the grand companies page, of the umbral eras. I'm truly amazed with them.

@Seif: You obviously are imagining things, or are blinded by nostalgia. Most of the quests in FFXI did *not* have any cutscene.

job quests were not "side quests"

nor were the ones linked to the main story.

and the lore isn't the main story lore it is just goings on in town. like the lalafell one S.E.X said (sorry had to XD) the 1 where a lalafell killed someone.... that is local lore. not story lore which is what the side quests are about.

Maybe there is just a disagreement over what constitutes a cut scene?

Anyways, I'm glad to hear the new quests are more interesting. The few I did from the first round felt so so.

The cutscenes were more common AFTER the Chains of Promathia expansion as it was pointed out. This is FFXIV. Do we have an expansion yet? No.

CoP was the 2nd Expansion for XI. Don't expect cutscenes for sidequests anytime soon.

I remember quests like the Star Onion Brigade set in FFXI, that really stood out to me because of the cutscenes.
They were minor, but they were still cutscenes.

only thing though, those were not side quests either, but a side story.

see the joker they woke up is conntent to "the hero" aka the summoner who died to say windy. story is as a final plea K-b tried to tame fenrir and call on him for help in the process he coouldn't fully control fenny and pretty much fried his brain to death. The joker was connected to him. when kb died the joker deactivated, with ythe sob activating joker they sorta revive kb in a sence who was sum wat still linked to fenny. Which is why we can get and summon fenny. :3

Well that was just one example that came to my head. I'm not saying that every quest in XI was like that, of course not.
But XIV should definitely have this. Even if it's just a small cutscene of people talking.

This is what I mean. The cutscenes don't have to be big but the fact that they're there is a lot better than nothing.
The music in some cutscenes like "Candle Making" made them feel more emotional experiences and the small (sometimes tiny) camera pans focused on the situation at hand and made the NPCs stand out.

Yes XI has some quests that don't have cutscenes in them. Those were usually the most worthless, repeatable trash-quests that can be seen in any MMO. Frankly it seems like that is the standard for all XIV quests currently.

I know XIV story CSs are mind blowing and that's not at all by what I mean by this thread. I'm talking simple elegant camera pans and animations that don't require a lot of development time and give the story some "oomph" and make it possible for the sound team to compose music suitable to the mood for these events. (there's already a ton of music that could be used for these in XIV)

That is exactly what I want. That's it. There doesn't even have to be additional animations, the current ones will suffice. But having the camera change from time to time actually immerses you more into the conversation or topic of that quest.

Atleast it does for me.

Sounds like someone is on a nostalgia kick, XI didn't have many unique quest cutscenes. Most of them were a camera angle and basic NPC animations...then again I guess you can count that as a "Cutscene"

It's not "some" quests that don't have a cutscene. It's "most". And yes, most quests in XI that didn't have a cutscene were quite bad (but not repeatable for the most part, so yeah, your memories seem to be definitely blurry).

On the other hand, the companies-related quests i've seen today in FFXIV are great. It doesn't take a cutscene to make a great quest.

Aside from main story missions name me more than a handfull of well animated cutscenes in Windurst.

You have a handfull of Star Onion quests, anything involving Shantoto because they needed to get every use out of that laugh animation of hers, and maybe a few others. Mind you many of the other quests have been added over YEARS of expansions and content.

I stand by the fact that 9/10 cutscenes you seen in XI involved.

1. A different camera angle.
2. NPC walking/talking animation.

Not what I would call "Motivating"

Am I missing something? How dramatic does a cut-scene have to be when its just you talking to a guy who wants you to refuel some fires in the forest? Should they add camera pans and dramatic angles pointlessly? No, I say leave the extra effort for awesome cut-scenes to quests once they have an established amount of little side-quests and have the time to work on making big side-quests.

At the moment they're piling up on the quests since there were NONE before. you may have forgotten that one of the reasons this game flopped so hard at release was a lack of content; regardless of how beautiful the graphics are.

What they're doing now is right, they're adding more CONTENT. regardless of whether the package is in a shiny cutscene or not.

the quality of XIV's cutscenes are 10x better than any i remember in XI. the opening cutscene for gridania's story, to me, was amazing. so much technicality and different effects made it so much better than XI's. you said that they didn't learn anything from XI? they learned how to make a quality cutscene using different camera effects such as slow motion.

if you had any peek at the R46 cutscene; then to me that would be enough motivation to get to R46 and see it and experience it for myself. if you want to only do quests with cutscenes, i suggest actually getting to R46 to get all the cutscenes which isn't hard to do once you actually try. and i mean try to find a group, party and do levelinks. and then get each of your class to 20 which is also not hard to do and do the class quests for the cutscenes.

i hope ppl know there was a huge difference beyween a
"storyline" quest and a "side quest" each quest does have lore on differenr scales. like a side quest to get mary's mile to a woman who couldn't sleep. that is town lore as you are learning about the people who live in the town

all the side quest atm are just to learn more about the npcs who "live" in the game. It wasn't going to add to the main mission lines story.
Like Sir learning of a lalafell who murdered someone by pushing them down the on some stairs.

I don't think anyone has trouble seeing the difference between those 2 in XI or XIV and it's not what this thread is about.

storyline quests had cs.
side quests did not have cs

storyline quests are not just the main mission, but quests that are in a chain. like SOB or that 1 in sandy with the guy from the past who used a staff to someone get into the present, this weas b4 wings was out.


sidequest are just lil bit lore teasers w/o using cs.
