Are you guys not logging out or something?

I know the 1017 error is the new idea that SE came up with to keep the servers stable but I'm worried it's being catastrophically exploited by the selfish because ARR doesn't have an logout on afk feature built into it.

I understand everyone wants to play, that's kind of a moot point -- but at what point do the rest of us who wait hours clicking out character's names and get trolled for a few moment by the loading screen before the error box shows up get our play time?

Is there an ETA on when this system is going to be updated or policy changed to where we can all get some levelling in? I'd hate to be left behind by my guild because I few people park their characters in Ul'dah and go shopping for their groceries, et al.

People are logging out. There are some bots, but I think for the most part.....SE just didn't have enough servers to handle the capacity.
And I don't think that auto logout for AFK will fix it. I think the only thing that can help this is simply more servers and transfers of characters to spread the population more around.

I think once I finally get to log in this time, I'm going to stay in. Seriously SE, you have your head up your ass. Fix this. It's not hard. This is how I'd handle it with my dev's:

1) Create a meeting
2) State the issues, the complaints and the requirements
3) come up with strategies.
4) Implement said strategies ASAP.
5) Make customers happy.

if i could get logged in i wouldn't log back out after this...

I'm not logging out. Last time I was disconnected by the server, it took me 8 hours to get back in. <_<;

I consider myself as having a pretty strong moral compass, but I'm beginning to really favour staying in myself...I'm a college student, what little time I have to play the game I'd like to actually play it, rather than stare at an error box...

How in the hell do they have bots already!! I really do hope that is not the case. Server problems I can handle, cheating is a whole other ball game and the single reason why I quit WoW.

Honestly. I don't blame people for not wanting to lgo out. After hours of 1017 would you wanna get hit by that too? The only time I get to play is at like, 4 - 6 am.

But think about it, if there were AFK timers and people actually logged out, then there would be less stress,more space and generally a much happier community

Implying you understand anything at all how server maintenance works. I'm annoyed just like everyone else, but it's not as cut-and-dry as "have a meeting and suddenly server hardware is processing more data."

My boyfriend logged in this morning and in the past 8 hours has played a grand total of 1 hour. He went to the Gym, made lunch, ran for the kids... he's been busy.

I have spent the past 4 hours trying to log in and stopping myself from signing him out on the hopes that if he logged off I could get in. Frankly, at least he gets to play. And I get to watch him, standing still, surrounded by now 60 characters than have not moved from their spot in over 4 hours...

So much for my day off...

From what i understand, All the servers are still running at max capacity as intended, but they have made login procedure tunnel incredibly small, filtering a limited number of login request at any given time. The Data Center is having trouble with a server side error so limiting the incoming traffic helps them pinpoint the issue.

I dunno where people are getting this "the servers are incapable of housing us blah blah blah" no, the servers are not even running at full capacity right now, when the tunnel has reached its request limit it sends the user a "server full" error when the server capactiy is really not full at all.

Iv temped at a Ruby Rails Data Centers before and when we want to find errors that cause instability we limit the incoming traffic rather than downsize the user database.

Even so, server side fixes shouldn't be taking this long unless there is an issue with the FFXIV client itself producing errors that populate into the server database, in which causes server instability tandemly. If that is the case, its going to take much longer than a day to find the issue because SE and the Data center have to work together. Finding a single syntax or logic error in a mountain of code isn't simple regardless of how much money or man power you have.

At the same time, SE or the Data Center shouldn't be having members of the coding staff be incompetent enough to even make mistakes that cause syntax/logic errors to begin with.

Yeah, see, that's the kind of behaviour that is just maddening. The last time I actually saw a "queue" window pop up, I was in spot 42 before it popped up with the 1017 error. I don't know if this is an accurate representation of how many people are legitimately trying to log in during these hours but if it is; those 60 spots could allow everyone access whilst those people did their daily routines in the real world. I've got another 2 hours to try to get in before I have to finish up my homeowrk and get some kip before school in the morning...it's an outrage...lol.

Don't get me wrong. I'm ALL for an afk timer logout. I have absolutely ZERO arguments against it.

I'm just saying as the game stands right now, with no afk timer for logout, I don't blame all the AFKers because, honestly, who wants to get smashed with 1017 all day and be unable to play. Lets not forget servers are not made out of nothing. There is more than a meeting to be done. Hardware to be ordered, and received. Space to put the hardware acquired if they do not have enough in their current location. Make sure the cooling system is sufficient as well as power use. Then there is also the man hours involved in uploading the data to the server, making sure it is stable (so people don't froth at the mouth). Finally, if all goes according to plan they then have to decide how, if at all, they will implement server transfers. I am sure there are a ton of other quality related issues as well. Myself, I would prefer that they take the time to do it right, rather than slapping something together that fails or constantly has to be down for maintenance.

Everyone acts like it is super easy to do what they are doing. It isn't! Given a choice, I am sure the devs would prefer to see the forums filled with PRAISE for their products, not a lynch mob. Personally, I am taking the patience route. Do I want to log in and play? HECK YEAH! However I am not going to sit here obsessively trolling the forum, or spamming the log in.

Meh, if i get to log in, i'll be playing forever.

I think it boils down more to people being utterly shocked and appalled at the fact that this wasn't sorted during the beta phase...when it realistically SHOULD have been sorted.

For what it's worth, I log out after every gaming session. I know others that do as well, but we are in the extreme minority.

Go into any capitol city and you'll see hundreds of players just standing around, and they'll be in those same positions everytime you come back to town.

We really need AFK timers.

Take a walk a round the cities/sanctuarys/towns you can see MANY people afk, and walk by them an hour later and still in that exact place. People are abusing the fact they don't get logged out, and staying logged in.
I knew I'd be out of the game for 3 hours, but for this very reason I didn't stay logged in. It's unfair to people trying to play. Not to mention if a lot of people can't get in, they may give up soon, and that means less people to play with down the line.

EDIT: Not to mention people in INN's for rested.

There aren't many bots, this game isn't economy based like XI or even as influenced by it as other games like WoW/Rift etc.. Been specifically designed that way, less demand means less need for supply, means less bots.
Just ignore them, and hope to god not too many people start complaining, or SE might do something stupid with how much they hate RMT, and have that huge collateral dmg issue XI had a while back where a whole bunch of innocent people got banned for a long time.

What would make me happy is a Properly Working Queue System. I think you would have less Squatters if people knew they didn't have to worry about pressing a button over and over to play.

I saw a transparent character in the horizon area earlier yesturday. I logged out earlier in the inn for the sleep XP bonus tho an now I can't sign back in :(

Precisely, I'd like to know exactly WHY they removed the queue system they had in place already. If there was a bit more communication it would set a lot of peoples' minds at ease...especially mine. If they said something to the effect of, "Every time we implement the queue system, we are forced to watch our grandmothers do a burlesque routine" or something to this effect; I would cease with my queries...and probably never sleep again.

That system is still in place, the only time I'm getting hit with 1017 and I get in, there is a queue...
During non peak hours, I get in right away with no queue or 1017.
I'd happily watch my grandmother do a burlesque routine just for a proper queue again, that way I could plan my nightmares of that event to end by the time my queue pops.

If they are trying to find instabilities in the server why would they want more people inside the server? All it does is cause more problems. Limiting traffic and getting rid of the que is what i would do if i was at the Data Center and wanted to keep it open. Otherwise i would have just shut down all the servers outright for a week and do a code overhaul on the database.

Did you forget that SE is debugging server issues right now, which is why some features are temporarily going to be disabled. and lag is more prominent as the guys at the datacenter are going through the racks.

That solves the problem only for one group of people, though: those fortunate enough to get logged into the game. It also promotes those players to STAY in the game donking it up for those of us who log out. Take down the servers for a week and fix the problem...it's not like the entire player base is getting a chance to play the game anyway. Does it seem fair that one group gets to level up and experience content whilst the other group gets to wait it out and be told by those people to "like it"? That's ignorant to the point of being offensive.

No one is forgetting but everyone thinks they should have been better prepared. This is not the first MMO to exist on top of this being 2013. Not to mention they ran into these issues prior to the grand launching, the meeting should have gone down soon as EA was having this issue. Actually from what I heard, some of these issues were in Beta.. so yeah, I could be wrong though but still, they fuggin up right now. I also don't believe this is trolling, this is venting and people come here to do it with people going through the same situation and feeling the same way about it because apparently there is no one in customer support for which the vent can be directed to. However, you don't seem to have the need to vent about the topic of this thread nor do you feel the same as those venting, yet you are on this thread. That would be classified as trolling. But hey, I get it.. you're tired of reading threads with people bitchin about their issues. Don't click em.

I agree, turn it off for everyone and fix the issue. They won't do that though because they don't want to look bad (too late) or should I say, worse for not being able to deliver (too late) on the promised launching. Everyone would be on equal ground, sure people would qq about not being able to play but thats already going on anyway.

Keeping the server open helps them find the error, and its likely a database logic error otherwise the servers would have shut down. The only way to find these errors is to see them actually occur in real time. Had SE shut down the servers to fix a database logic error, they could have simply just reloaded the database client and hoped for the best, and that could have not fixed anything at all. Iv done my share of Server Side IT programming and I can only guess whats happening at the Data Center based on my experience, and its not greener on the otherside. Its Hot and sweaty work that gets no recognition when things actually work properly, and cursed for being incompetent when errors pop up that is nowhere near your fault or had anything to do with.

I don't like the fact that some players were unwillingly selected to be opped out of the game because of this debugging session, i don't like that those paid members have been victimized. But there is simply no other solution to finding issues in code when it comes to servers and databases. Had this been a client issue, or critical error a simple patch from SE would have been good. But sadly this is not the case and we could see days and weeks before a real solution is found.

Adding more servers is not a solution, it makes more problems as it just multiplies errors.

Is making a test server with the same codebase and populating it with dummy accounts so they can see it happen in real time not in the realm of possibilities? It just seems to me like this is something that should have been fixed by now, that's all I'm saying. Given the problems that have been going on for days now; I find it hard to believe they are no closer to finding the answer and continue to be deliberately vague with their communications to us. A good portion of their player base is unable to play the game and we get promotions for the devs blog and 4 new commercials? Priorities....priorities.

this is how I feel, They will fix it eventually and we will all get to play. But for the time being they are limiting the servers to stabilize them so we can have an enjoyable play time soon (hopefully). There is no point in complaining that, ultimately, most of us have no idea about the problems they are facing. Many people act like they are leisurely strolling through these problems without having their PAYING customers in mind. Do not jump the gun and just give up on something that seems to have a lot of potential, and maybe with an added bonus for those that were affected, just saying, especially if you already paid for it. Why not just wait for the end of the 30 day subscription and get your money's worth.

and hey guess what I just got into the game by waiting for thirty mins spamming, then my controller died and and I stopped spamming, then I try again after ten minutes of a dead controller, then it signed me in a queue as place 535, then try again for a 2nd time, I get in.

Everyone I know is staying logged in, all day/night, simply because of the hassle we have trying to get back in with the login limitations. Heck I'd be doing it myself if it wasn't so hot and my computer turns the room into a cooker...

I was "lucky" in that I was able to get in this evening after only 15 minutes of 1017, but I know other people who still can't get in.

We need an idle AFK kick, 30 minutes would be more than enough, but at the very least, a bigger queue so we don't have to keep clicking start, character, okay, repeat etc. I wouldn't mind seeing queue 10,000+ if I'm actually in the queue at least.

I completely agree, i find it hard to swallow that they aren't closer to finding a solution, and if they were, they should have at-least put out a DEV blog article about it and communicating with us rather than giving us commercials n shit.

A test server running a dummy account database would be the best senario if it was just a server side issue. I agree, fucking shut us down. However if its a client error that populates an error into the server database, then theres no getting around that, but then that should have been delt with at beta testing, unless something drastically changed in the core executives of the client between beta and official release versions.

Guys this not logging out problem will sort itself out in a few days. Depending on the offenders graphics card, it will eventually overheat and cause their system to either blue screen or catch on fire. Enjoy that thought :D.
