At this point, just keep pushing forward. You're going to have people picking apart every little thing you do or don't do. Since the number of people playing already exceeds the anticipated amount, a few lost subs is going to mean nothing in the long run.
Besides these server issues, the rest of the game feels solid and it should be an understood fact that these things will be taken care of at some point very soon. Some who threaten to quit will, some won't and some just don't care and are waiting for the fix. Regardless, we have a good game on our hands.
If you feel the need to appeal to the upset vocal mass, feel free, but you also have a good portion of players that are patiently waiting and eagerly anticipating the time when I can log in again.

I haven't been able to log on all day sir. I am not angry but i would certainly enjoy playing. Just because they have full servers doesn't mean that they should just not worry about losing people. I don't want to play anything else. I want to play this game because i love it. There are many of us, not being vocal at all, who would like to play and aren't angry...we are sorely disappointed. This post makes it sound like you are playing right now, therefore you have no right to speak about those who haven't been able to, especially in regards to essentially telling us to push off.

White knights hope with patience it will work out, and the haters hope that with angry posts will get things done.
I am just sad myself, usually I am a white knight, but I feel lost now.
I don't believe anger can solve anything.
And I do believe they working hard on the issues. But since the errors keep returning I am afraid this issue can't be quick fixed.
I want ARR to succeed, because I do love it a lot, when I can play it.

I consider myself a White Knight also, however I am just as lost. Its like I have defended this game and played it proudly during 1.0 and even played when it didn't matter anymore.
I have been waiting on this release, looking at videos, and full excitement.
Defended the game to my friends enough to where they believed in square also.
Now that I got them on to play, its this crap.
I just don't know anymore. -

And surprise, surprise: he is Legacy. Just like ~98% of people deeming these problems as "just normal", "it's launch", "'it'll get fixed", "deal with it"... We have been hearing that old tale since the very beginning of this game's testing:
During Alpha: "It's alpha, it's obvious the game has lots of bugs, deal with it" (reasonable argument so far).
During Beta Phase 1: "It's closed beta, there's lots of testing to do, deal with it" (still reasonable up to this point).
During Beta Phase 2: "Still closed beta, they just addressed some bugs but game's not really playable yet, deal with it" (Since P2 was pretty much P1's extension, it also was reasonable).
During Beta Phase 3: "Beta is beta, PS3 users just got to test it so it's normal they get more issues, deal with it" (From here it is that it starts getting old and not very convincing... I mean, Alpha+ 2 Beta phases should not be enough to stop using it as an excuse...? Things already got tested many times. Regardless, P3 went smoothly, so we cannot really complain yet).
During Beta Phase 4: "Even if its Open beta its STILL BETA. Things like these happen, that's what beta does, deal with it" (At this point, the credibility of this argument is simply dead... It has been dragged through pretty much the beggining of the game's testing with the promise that "things will get better" and "such things won't happen at launch", yet little to no improvements are shown regarding the game's quality other than the content itself and, most importantly, things DO repeat afterwards. Some went as far as saying Beta phase 4 was "sucessful"... really...).
And now, on Early Access: "It's an MMO's launch, all MMO's go through this, deal with it".
I mean... come ON, FOR REAL...? The argument which has been used to death and NEVER applied or proved true is still the best answer to give...? People, EA is, technically, the game's actual launch date, and we are still with problems that should have been addressed since PHASE 4 (and they supposedly were, in fact). Do you think all of these things will magically disappear in 2 days after a few hours of maintenance between EA's end and launch...? Well, guess what: the same was said about EACH AND EVERY OTHER PROBLEM, including error 3102.
Enough is enough, really... Legacy or not, you guys really need to start seeing things the way they are. At this rate, all you will do is follow the same old pattern and say:
(On August 27th): "It's just launched, it's obvious they'll get server congestion and issues, all MMO's do, deal with it".
Basically, it all boils down to "deal with it" for all you lot, eh...? And the rest who do not "deal with it" simply get labeled as ~The Dreaded, Disposable Vocal Minority~ because, apparently, all it takes for some of you guys to think everything is fine is for SE to throw a few words and apologies and done; we now have to "deal with it"...
Do not get me wrong: I actually DO support SE's efforts on this, as the problem is, in the end, worse for them than for us. We only lose gameplay time; they, on the other hand, have money on stake.
My complaint is not towards the company since their approach was the best one possible given the context. It is about the position that people like the OP take. Not only most of them are old members dating back from 1.0 or even FFXI, but they also have the least to lose: they are at level 50 and end-game content is still not released, so no wonder they have no complaints... They cannot be in our shoes even if they also get affected by all these issues, yet they SOMEHOW believe they represent us and all player's voices better than the ones truly aggravated by these problems, simply because they have been here for longer. New game = new beginning, people. What happened before is irrelevant to the cause.
You need to take your Legacy googles, your "SE pwnz!" T-shirt and your Cloud Strife figurines out of your eyes and minds and finally say: "Man, I think there's an actual problem with this game and we should at the very least recognize it so SE doesn't act too late.". Right now, your positions are so overly optimistic that the developers literally recognize the issues in public before you do, and that is just ridiculous...
I could not care less about all MMO's having the same issues: this is 2013, this game was announced 2 and a half years ago and, if anything, all the MMO's that had a tough start since then should tell you that this game should NOT have had the same issues since the feedback was there and the mistakes could have been asimilated and learned about. Nonetheless, if I did not know, I would say this is the first MMO to experience these things at launch, since their procedures and reactions are saying pretty much that. And what else to blame but the lack of awareness and complaints from old-time players whose new motto is "Deal With It"...? They get neither feedback nor motivation to foresee problems in time if they get the illusion that most of their players will just settle down with it and wait without saying a word.
Wake up, people: your optimism is not paying off. I would not be writing here if that was the case. I would not be writing here if all those optimistic mantras told since the beta were actually justified through a better gaming experience. On the contrary: the closer the game gets to launch, the more errors and problems appear, and I do believe things should have been the other way around... But since the important lot of players, that is, the ones who communicate most often around the forums and may be heard more easlily, are the ones with almost nothing to lose even if the game gets delayed a month and therefore never complain, then "Keep Calm and Move On" is constantly said, while SE spams the words "error", "issues", "congestion", "emergency maintenance", "apologize", "support us", "stable environment" and "NA/EU servers" in your face and you are all, like, "Deal With It: A Motto Reborn". What does it take for you to recognize a problem so OBVIOUS when it arises...? Repetition does not constitute a valid argument.
Also, if you really think SE is on the position of not caring about the people cancelling their preorders and not playing the game: think twice. Do remember that this game's development costs actually left them on red numbers. That is no secret information, it was made public, go check it out. They need as many customers as they can get, and what is happening right now is not going to help them. First impressions are important. Always. But that is never going to happen of their most loyal player base keeps "dealing with" all the "it's" that keep happening over and over.
To be honest, it will all end up backfiring to you... By diminishing people aggravated by all the issues thinking their support and patronage is not important, not only you are not helping the game in becoming better (since you incentivate the same problems always happening and accept any quick-made hotfix they throw since nobody told SE that players DO NOT actually like that), but, worst of all, you are not living up to the reputation of "FFXIV: ARR has the best community of any MMO"... A good gaming community is one whose first and last priority is to make sure EVERYONE (including ~The Vocal Minority~) gets the best gaming experience possible, and accept all the good and all the bad accordingly. Right now, you are instead alienating anyone deemed a minority as "disposable money" or "a calculated loss", and converting all the bad into "normal, unavoidable knit-picks" whenever the bad happen.
Bottom line: "SE, just keep moving forward." is, paradoxically, the reason why this thread exists in the first place. Please think about it. -

I have been there, and done that, and frankly the fact that the servers haven't been down for 24 bloody hours is a massive shock to me.

The only small thing that irked me was that I have is that I feel they worry more about JP servers than ours. If you have played in their servers, there are NO problems at all. Character creation is smooth, game is smooth, log in is smooth...I just feel they treat us like second to JP instead of equal since we are all customers to them and not to mention Paying customers. But that's something that came to mind while playing in JP server.
Other than that, I just hope they fix it, don't care how long it takes. -

I've played lots of mmo's at launch, and they all go pretty much the same, I don't think its an excuse, but I think its just being realistic. I'm not putting down SE or defending them, I am just as annoyed as everyone else, but it's pretty much what I expected to happen. I paid an extra $40 dollars to pre-order a PS3 copy just so I could play during early access, and I pretty much feel like I flushed that down the toilet, but I pretty much saw that coming.
Also, last night someone shouted something about "FFXIV japonly", and everyone yelled at him ... but I don't know but I think Black_rose might be right. I know this isn't peak hours for jp servers now, but they have got to be flooded with na/eu folks now, and from what I have experienced, they are running much smoother then na/eu servers have been. I don't know ... this is about the time conspiracy theorys start up ... a bunch of annoyed nerds sitting around with nothing to do ... yelling at each other too much. -

The first week can make or break a mmo due to feedback and game reviews. Some bugs are expected with emergency maintenance once in awhile. Most understand that and its part of any new MMO. Gamers have come to expect updates and info on whats going on. Add in that only NA servers are having the issues while JPN servers are not makes many think the JPN are being treated differently.
Go to any MMO forums and you can probably find FF ARR in one of the threads being discussed. If the feedback would have been positive that would have attracted more players. Feedback being negative is causing many new potential players to not give it a try. Sorry but the bigger the player base the more SE can invest in the game to make it better.
It is frustrating. I have the pre-order from Game stop that I haven't bought yet. At this time I wont be buying it when it comes in and canceling my order. Come Friday ill come back and see if everything is fixed and running smoothly. If not Ill just write this off as a failed game.
I really hope the game turns out great. For that to happen though there needs a lot of people playing the game. Right now the game isn't going to attract players or keep the players they have. Once a game has failed in the eyes of the gaming community then its nigh impossible to do well. Yea the game may survive but not with the numbers needed to produce. -

I think most of us agree it's good of us to give other humans the benefit of the doubt, patience, and understanding. We've all been in situations where we've greatly benefited from other people displaying these qualities, and yet as soon as the humans we're dealing with are part of a company--we stop? This doesn't make sense to me. Square Enix is just a group of other human beings and sure they make mistakes, everyone does, but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop treating them like humans--which means giving them my patience.

I just pray they get these issue settled before Full release.
The issue I see here is that they did not prepare for this many players. Most likely they expect 50% less players than they are having now before Early Access.
With the NDA being lifted soon for reviews there is going a lot of bad reviews if this issue isn't fixed before that time hits.
Only way I see them fixing the damage done by excessive amount of players trying to enter and play on one server is to either increase the server cap by 1000 or higher
or
create Overflow servers like GW2 to handle the large amount of players trying to enter the main server. -
