Free PvP and/or PK server

I couldn't find a thread dealing directly with this, so i thought i'd make one.

I know many people won't even want to hear about this, but my only aim is to start a healthy discussion about a topic i consider interesting.

1) PK Server(s)

(PK = Player Killing, aka the ability to engage any other player in game in direct combat, eventually killing them)

Even though the initial official stance was that FFXIV was to be mostly a PvE game, how would you feel about having one or more PK servers, added to the current ones, where you can make an extra character (or even your main) and live in a truly dangerous environment, where you can survive only by having either power or friends?

Exp rates could even be lowered so to make it harder to reach high levels, thus creating a broader difference in power between players. Going a bit farther with this idea, periodic character wipes or rare extremely powerful items could further play with the power balance and create even more excitement...

Powerful equipment would also become a very important asset, which would possibly start wars over the resources, making gathering and crafting the center of political struggles. (This factor could be further encouraged by lowering drop rates and creating a shortage of resources.)

Linkshells would become something akin to small nations or brigades, where leadership truly matters for everyone's wellbeing and prestige. Wouldn't that sort of world be instantly both exciting and alive, even with the game as it is right now?

2) Free PvP

Much less dramatically it could be interesting to implement free PvP, where single players or parties are allowed to spar between each other as simple exercise, practice or competition whenever both parties agree to do so.
I think this feature could possibly improve roleplay and solve the hardcore linkshells' bickering among each other, at the same time allowing us to create our own level-capped competitions and tournaments (as we wait for more content, perhaps.)

Finally, implementing this feature would only require coding on the part of the dev. team, without the need to make new SFX, 3d models, textures or complex combinations of content like quests, new cities etc...

There are plenty of models for this sort of feature out there, so it wouldn't even be something so unusual in the gaming world, yet it would immediately attract attention towards the game.

Two problems with PvP:

1. level 50s griefing level 5s
2. A pve build that most people will be running around with, will generally lose to a pvp build. Plus the PKer should be smart enough to wait until after a fight with a mob is over and attack you while you aren't at max HP/MP.

So that server would see a low population at least for right now.

Maybe later on more people would be interested in something like this.

they said they wont add open PK or servers only for PVP enough with the ideas about pvp this is FFXIV not wow or rift. I'm happy they said no to open PK i don't want to walk around with someone spam dual -.- no thanks. PVP would be same like ffxi fun games but noting really big.

1. Indeed. That's why i propose implementing a single server for this and various methods to improve balance. As a lv 5 you would need to actually struggle to survive, finding friends or a linkshell to protect you.
2. The equipment in FFXIV isn't varied enough to allow "builds" yet. Most equipment raises the specific stats of the classes it favors and there are only 6 stats to increase.

Indeed a PK server would be for later. However the free PvP option could improve things right now.

The current servers would stay as they are now. Only people who want to do so would join a PK server.
In the second option you wouldn't have to fight if you don't want to.

Imagine the window that comes up when you trade with someone. The same would happen with PvP. "This person wants to fight with you. Yes/No"
So even if you dislike the first option, adding this sort of "soft" PvP would already add a lot of depth to the game.

Like i said SE wont make a PK world it just not going to happen the game is made around with the idea of PVE. Unlike every other MMO out there that run off PVP this game is only for PVE. Sure they would add pvp but it be noting like the one in WoW more like the one we had in FFXI. So ya ffxiv would never have only JP world or only pk worlds or only RP worlds that up too us to make it that way.

They said many times that they would never add open PK it just how SE work.

Whether it will be added or not doesn't matter and isn't the point of this thread, as i state in the second sentence, i am simply asking whether you'd like it or not and whether you think it could actually make this game more enjoyable.~

Personally, i think that deciding from the start to not implement it is a wrong business choice on their part and is potentially due to some sort of server/engine limitation.

It's not a bad business choice because there not selling a PVP game. Yes they would add PVP but not open PVP or PVP worlds that just wont happen. We would have PVP type system like FFXI in ffxiv some mission you have to fight a npc 1 vs one maybe that the type of system that be open later. Maybe we also get ship battle like mission 15 in LL which would be pretty cool. It seem that craft would later make gun for ships so this could be PVP system for sure i would not mind Ship vs Ship combat.

maybe we get airship battle PVP system all of this is find by me but open PVP or PVP only worlds are not and wont happen. Having PVP world would just cut down the players base we are fine not having PVP worlds it just make linkshell that only one to do them. FFXIV would never have 6+mil players to even think about making only PVP worlds or only NA,JP worlds like some ppl are asking for.

so-so. I like pvp, but I don't understand how in this world, a Miqo'te can be pked by a lalafell. anyway, let's move out the pure appearance. If you want remove a gap, the exp must be faster, not slower, if not the first start, become 50 and pk the slower players.
Ofc the actual system needs more than a line of code for pvp, but who know, in a distant future...

The game is nowhere near being able to incorporate pvp. It is not built nor balanced with pvp in mind and putting any effort in this branch would only cripple all the resources needed to bring the base game to an acceptable, marketable state.

PvP pleases a small crowd of harcore players while driving off masses of casual players due to abuse of pvp. This game desperatly needs more players. Not less. Seeing how SE implemented pvp in FFXI, i'd rather not have them reproduce it in FFXIV.

I'd bet a pvp server would end up empty, without the critical mass of people required to support the basic leveling up needs.

I would not want Open PvP in this game. And if there would be open PvP (some ppl would want that, I wouldnt play anymore). No point to stay in game where 40 archer can surprise my 20 miner and shot him down. :P Thats reason why "No open PvP".

That gives me an answer. PvP server itself would not be played by many and it would be waste of energy - with maintance included. We have not enough players on normal servers, PvP server is pointless.

Anyway in anyother form - pvp - would be nice. And it would add more content.
1) Challenge PvP - for confirm by other player/party
2) Arena with "some rules" ? Some point "Honor Pts" or something - system and maybe a "tiny reward" - just symbolic with that I mean 100 gil :P
3) Card game - But this is system itself, also nice option of PvP
4) another kind of Pvp - Chocobos included, other quests inclued, etc.

Yes please to servers with different rule-sets.

If SE wants to attract various players, freaking cater to them for godssake.

If you dont want open PvP, dont play on that kind of server maybe?

I think that having one PVP/PK server would be actually good to call out for other fan bases or try new things. Some ppl like it, most of ff fans don't still, having a specific server with those rules would be good to appeal other gamers.

Rules would have to be strict, pvp would be duel style (yes/no option) and force combat resulting in PK would come with punishment until some sort of karma points were cleared out by grinding mobs or dieing resulting in some 10% xp (physical and class) loss and a 15% chance to drop an item on death after 3 pk points. These would prevent ppl ganking low lvls all the time and still allow some one to do it.

I play on a PvP server on Rift and have on WoW... that was my choice and I somewhat enjoy what goes on in world PvP. Well.. minus last weekend when my guild was doing a Raid Rift and a guild from the other faction (doubling us), decided they wanted to ATTEMPT murdering the 20 of us. When the quest is on a time limit, that kind of hinders your gaming experience when others are interfering with it.

What I'm getting at is FFXI and FFXIV are different MMOs, entirely. There are no factions nor ANY reason given as to why any characters should be fighting to kill. No racial tension. No tension between the city-states. No tension between class guilds. World PvP would be a nice feature to have if that's something you like.. but the game should have some kind of backstory as to why it's even happening besides, "other MMORPGs have it."

Factoring in my little story about my little experience in Rift, when your progression is on a cycled time limit and someone's keeping you from doing so, would you honestly be happy that they implemented this feature?

That not the point FF is not a PVP game and never going to be. The only type of PVP we would have it be the same as FFXI but better. So they wont be any open PVP tanaka and yoshio both have said no so there you go. for that matter they wont be any worlds that would be PVP,PVE,RP,F2P at all :)

Honestly, I wouldn't be adverse to certain forms of PvP, but what invariably happens is that PvPers start screaming over class balances, which developers then cater too, which then leads to an endless series of 'buffs' and 'nerfs' which basically ruin certain classes in the PvE environment in which they were built for and lowers everyone's enjoyment.

I wouldn't mind having an area that you could duel in just for the hell of it, though, as long as it didn't lead to the aforementioned 'buffs' and 'nerfs.' I mean, they have a coliseum already, might as well put it to use. As an RPer, I think it would be fun to be able to throw down the gauntlet and take something to the arena to settle.

A ranked colosseum for controlled PvP will be nice. Open PvP and PK, no thank you.
Anyway, you're not their target audience.

Been through vanilla UO, can't say I truly enjoyed being PKed constantly when starting out.
