Guardian's and Character Redesign

*GUARDIANS.
(God damn apostrophe.)

I completely understand that when we first log on after Launch we get the opportunity to redesign our character, including name and deity.

However in the last quest of 1.23 we obtained a ring when we /prayed at our deity's stone. (E.g., I chose Thaliak as my deity, and when I prayed at that stone I obtained Thaliak's Ring).

My question is, if we choose to change our deity in the redesign, will I still have Thaliak's Ring, or will it be changed to my new guardian?

I know they're pretty useless at higher levels, but I'd hate to have a ring that was no longer my chosen deity.

(And I know someone will ask, but the reason I want to change is just small. My char name will still be Aqua, so I would prefer a deity with water resistance... indulge me!)

That's a good question. I planned on staying with Llymlaen regardless (because fishing is awesome) but I realize some people plan on changing their character drastically and their current guardian may not fit their newly changed character.

Especially RPers and the like. I could never get into RPing but if I'm curious about this then I'd imagine some hard-core RPs might be too.

I think I'll be stuck with Thaliak nonetheless. I'd hate if they actually released guardian-related armour and I end up with a ring that's different to everything else I own ><

I might be wrong, but isnt Thaliak a Water Guardian anyway?! I havent really looked into it since Creating my character way back at launch so am probably wrong, but I picked Thaliak, and I coulda swore I went for a Water based guardian....

Regardless, it's still a question I'd like to know the answer to =) If Thaliak is Water+ then that's just a bonus!

Edit: Nope, you're right! Halone & Menphina are ice. Thanks for clearing that up, looks like I'll be staying Thaliak anyways! Arigatou Gozaimasu.

thaliak is also Astral :) while Nymeia is Umbral.

Ooh, as character generation was one of the things that the NDA has been lifted on; so far, as of Beta Phase 2, there isn't a difference in resistances for deities of the same element whether they're Astral or Umbral.

Ah yes, I forgot CC NDA had been lifted! I was trying to be so careful how I worded things, haha. I think come phase 3 the differences will be viewable in CC (or is that at launch?)

I followed up with this and as mentioned before, since FFXIV 1.0 characters transfer as they are, these items will remain unchanged and we won't be offering any ring exchanges.

I chose Menphina because it was the 2nd and I was going by my birthday. 2nd month, so I figured Menphina was the right choice.

That's... actually kind of a shame, really. The information you're given during character creation is only enough to pick which one leaves a good first impression, but you actually have to play the game to experience the lore required understand which one you really prefer.

I never even really thought about it until now, but that kinda sucks.

I know it's a relatively small deal, overall... but isn't the entire point of the ring to have that feeling of identity attached to it? Small deal or not, being pressured to choose between two uncomfortable positions in terms of player identity (giving up the attachment you have to the item itself from being there to summon The Twelve, or giving up ever begin associated with the Guardian you feel right aligned with) is... well, that kinda sucks.

To put it in a personal perspective, I've favored THM over my other classes since day one. SE says THM and Nald'thal go hand in hand - so I act accordingly. Then they add jobs, THM becomes BLM and now it's all about Rhalgr. Calamity hits, we summon the Twelve, I automatically have my ring chosen based on my antiquated choice. SE offers the chance to fix one but the other isn't worth the trouble?

I get it - small potatoes... but... (/scratches head) ...that kinda sucks.

I originally signed on as Azeymas (even though I am a Moon kitty) as she is fire element and I am a RL Aries (fire sign) and I thought Nald'thal's icon was wierd (looks like a football). Now that I know more about the lore I feel that Nald'thal would be my guardian, but I already have Azeymas ring and dunno if it would be wierd to swap my chars alignment :(

That's where I am, too. I wouldn't say anyone would think you were weird, but choosing either option feels wrong to me. My experiences in 1.X are very important to me. I honestly cannot decide whether I'm more averse to never being aligned with the god that fits literally every single thing about my character now, or never having the same meaning attached to my memento of Living on a Prayer, the very events that lead to the most emotional cutscene of the game at the End of an Era.

I can't think of any other way to express myself, so let's just say it again.

Why does it need to be so black and white?
Just cause whatever deity is connected to your birth date, doesn't mean you can't associate with others; after all...you did pray to ALL of them.
I don't see why your equipments would change, just cause you change what deity you associate with.
Maybe there will be new ways to obtain those rings though.

I thought of doing that, but then I figured who knows if I'm going to pick right and what if something later makes me facedesk o_o so I just chose the deity that resonated with me the most, regardless any other real life reasons or the class I would play. Birthday? Wat? My issue is that, knowing nothing about the lore aside from what the Character Creator told me in September 2010, I picked the one that was linked to Thaumaturge and called it a day. Since then, jobs have been released and the lore has changed. It no longer fits. I'd at least be able to reconcile the inconsistency if I had anything to do with Ul'dah, but I don't. There's no birthday involved, just in-game storyline consistency.

I'm grateful for the chance to align with the deity I've fallen in line with, I'm just going to feel like a goofball with the wrong ring representing the completion of the 1.X storyline. It's not like I can't learn to deal; it's just... why not?

Why not just throw a targetable "???" on a statue that, when you emote at it wearing the ring, checks for an inconsistency between the ring and your guardian and, PRAISE THE TWELVE, makes things right? Even one that's only there for a limited time? Too much effort for not much benefit to the company? I understand.

I'll say it again: I get it... it just kinda sucks

Youuuuu try that "equal footing of the gods" blasphemy on an Ishgardian and see if you don't end up setting the realm record for most spear holes in one ass. The Twelve are in the same belief system, but they aren't exactly allies. Often, some of them are at flat out war with others; the Moogles left their realm because of it. They're like the city-states themselves; they only stop going at it amongst each other when something threatens the collective.

I must be somewhat fortunate that I am happy with my decision a few years later.

I picked Menphina on the basis of ice alignment, preferring the serenity of the moon to a warrior's fury. Two years later and I'm intending to swap to a male keeper of the moon. It kinda just worked out.

I just had the 1 in 6 chance of being lucky and choosing a random deity which, a year later, had the elemental allignment that I wanted =b

Now I feel bad for not giving a rat's behind about elemental alignments and stuff like that >.>;;;

I don't even remember what the ring does. . .

Great question Fantasia... and although I'm unlikely to change mine, I'm kinda curious to see how this will be implemented.

By the way, I selected Halone because she's the patron for Ishgard, goddess of Ice, and I used to believe that her spears represented the Lancer job... may have actually represented the Three Great Spears of Japan Tonbogiri, Otegine, and Nihong (that was just extensive speculations we had on the forums a couple years ago)

I'm Halone at the moment, though i'm not sure i will stay with her. Thinking about switching to Azeyma or possibly Lymlaen. I agree it sucks but i won't be making my decision based on wether those crappy rings match with my deity, i will probably just incorporate it into my characters story. I don't think your deity should be a static thing that is unchangeable after character creation. Who people worship can change as they continue to move forward in their lives, so your deity ought to be changeable within the game. But it probbably should have some sort of restriction like having to pay tribute to the deity you wish to switch to.

Tributes and offerings would be an awesome system; I'd be down with that! But I'd always just pick Nophica XD haha
