Make Airship/Train feel more "alive"

First of all i apologize if this has been discussed before...

Personally i didn't like the way airships felt in 1.0. It seems that in 2.0 they will be implementing trains as well, and i would really like that instead of getting a cutscene every time you board the airship/train (which you only see once because most of the times you are going to skip it anyway), you get to travel all the way and get to see and enjoy the world around.

I think it would be great if airships and trains had optional things to do. Like make them the "gold saucer" of the game.

Of course, I also don't want to be held back if I need to instantly teleport to go do something.

As always, make it optional.

I think that Airship or Train as means of transportation are useless. Because we have Teleport and we need it to be fast in our movements. But Yoshi-P could introduce New Areas accessible only via Airship/Ship/Train.

One of the things I like in XIV vs other MMOs I've played (particularly XI) is the ease of transportation, so I'd prefer that there were not areas that can only be accessed via trains/airships/boats. I did still use Airships and chocobos sometimes amount to save on anima. Although I may be mistaken but I thought there was something about taking a boat to get the PvP zone in the live letter? So there seems to be plans to have exclusive transport to some areas.

Everyone has their prefrence, but I prefer short but existing travel times. I dislike the free teleport system. Though dont get me wrong I didnt like 40 min walk times either.

"oh ho ho But Shouga Yoshida is trying to make the mmo appeal to broader audience so dont get all hardcore rpgy crap on me" ok thats fine, WoW which has many fold the subscriptions of GW 1 and 2, uses short sweet travel times so.. yeah..

From an interview btw for peoples information anima is gone and you use gil instead, so you have limitless teleports but at the cost of gil (limited by your pocket).

Also it appears Yoshida has changed rented chocobos into a flight path (ground) system similar to WoW, if I read it right at least.

Warrior is useless, because Monk already hits stuff and Paladin tanks stuff! Impossible to have multiple things that serve the same purpose!

13 min boat ride from A to B
26 min to get from A to B if you miss boat by 1 step
I am starting to debate if i want the "more alive" thing here... It's fun the first few times, but then it grinds you to death.

depends entirely on the length of transit and how long you have to wait for it in the first place. if anything, just give players an option to choose the scenic route. but forcing every single person into an awful FFXI-style 20-30 minute affair every time they want transportation is a quick way to lose a huge chunk of player interest

You can mess with the times you know - without completely wiping the system. (Like comparing WoW to FFXI, both use very similar transportation methods - one is greatly faster then the other)

right. if they can actually make the transportation real-time and make the times reasonable (1-5 minutes combined total wait) it does add to immersion. anything beyond a few minutes, though, and it's a big fat nope

Very true. Waiting at boats in FFXI, or barely missing one was such a pain... I can see how people have nightmares about that. Missed the boat, 15 mins, on the boat, 15 mins, now you are in this town get on chocobo 15 mins.. wait for others who may have missed the boat 15 mins. 1 hour gone by waiting.

In WoW when you missed a boat it was like meh, another one is coming in 1-2 mins (I think a couple were longer but they were usually for obscure locations if I can remember) /turn on guild chat and start talking for a bit.

I like the "feeling" of knowing you've traveled somewhere by experiencing it rather than some popup title saying "You've arrived at [X]", but I understand there's a limit to how far you should have to travel. However, I feel that this limit is also dependent on what's actually taking place around you. For example, a 30 min ride on an/a [insert vehicle here] where your character is just standing there would most certainly at first be [maybe] entertaining, I'm sure the novelty will quickly wear off and simply become a "snooze" for a lot of players (although, some, like myself, might take it as an opportunity to grab another beer, take a short wc break or break in general, etc.). But if you add some more elements to it, while not increasing the total time to ultimately get from point A to point B, I'm sure the 30min would feel more like 5min or something significantly less. But until they add teleportation for everything IRL I prefer to have to traverse my fantasy universes myself (so to speak) to some degree.

Seeing the land from the airship would be wonderful, though perhaps like others said an option could be put to skip it.

It'd be more appealing to take the "scenic route" if there were content developed around it. Like if you talk to the person at the counter to get a ticket to the airship/train and you get some dialog stating that monsters have been harassing passengers, you know that would be a cue that you'd want to take the scenic route if you want to go on the ship and bash some stuff. If you're not in the mood, you can just pick the option to fast travel and be done with it.

I was thinking about the train and it'd be pretty cool if they could work it in somehow like on Doomtrain where you had to get past the zombies. Or on the airship, you could fight off Ahriman and other avians.

no, 30 minutes won't ever *feel* like 5 minutes. i only log on when i have sh*t to do. so if i have something to do and i have to wait 30 minutes to go somewhere, it's going to *feel* like 6 hours.

I always thought they could do things to their boats and such like if pirates attack the ship goes in alarm state and everyone is shouting and preparing for battle - you can go to the rafts and take one off and escape the pirate attack or you can stay on and fight them off.

If you leave on the raft you have a normal travel time, if you stay and fight the travel time will increase to include for the extra event going on. (I dont think 30 mins is a good default time, but like in my pirate example you could take the 3 minutes or something and turn it into +10 if you accepted the event)

So even then you can have content making these exciting without being a total nuisance (a la FFXI).

I know someone is probably going to shoot me for saying WoW so many times but I played it for a few years and I never heard anyone cry about the travel network they developed - and that game was very popular so it showed proof the concept works in a general audience.

Well I think there is a gold amount of time, where you feel the travel and you appreciate the scale it provides but at the same time you are not considering to go AFK for something.

"Well just got on the boat going to go pick up the kids and make dinner - brb in 30"

I suppose some people could honestly sit there the whole time doing nothing but... I couldnt :P

Definitely having content on the ships like pirates, card games, quests, fishing - that is all cool but people wont want to do that every time. So I think a good result is to mix them together - SE has instance technology so they have freedom when each person has to leave based on contents they are preforming and their choices.

That pirate example sounds kind of cool - it's almost comparable to making a decision to stop and spend the extra time to participate in a real-time event or to not spend the extra time and simply go about your route.

Yeah I thought that was interesting he did that. I'm curious if the cost to teleport is actually going to be something you consider. Like hmm well I dont want to spend 10K to teleport to the other side of the map, rather I'll ride this chocobo for 1K.

I think I'd be cool with the teleport system if it wasn't in every zone - I want airships to own all other transportation systems and I dont see it being so "O gasm face amazing" when teleport is already a clear winner in most regards.

Completely agreed. Thats why I thought the short but sweet travel times are such a great compromise between "immersive world that is networked" vs "very fast get things done dungeon hub". I felt FFXI was too long and sometimes I just didnt get something done because the group fell apart due to underestimated travel times. But in WoW (few years experience) that never happened maybe I waited 4 mins but w.e kill some nearby monsters and chat no problem. So at least for me, the under 30 minute to get to one side to the other rule of thumb worked well. Over 30 and I felt like something was wrong.

This would be kinda cool to have. But Optional for sure. for the most part I don't want to be stuck on an Airship when I just want to get from point A to point "Really far Away". But if there were events that took place like battles and such I would be all for that!

I would like random events while using public transportation. Maybe, while you are on the train, it get's attacked by imperials. You can either just stay in your current car and wait for the imperials to leave (good if you wanna AFK or break away from the computer), or you can go and fight them. Fighting would just be something to do while you are traveling to your destination, instead of just sitting down and waiting.

Maybe imperials can attack the inside and outside of the train. Some of the passengers can go from car to car fighting imperials until they get to the engineer's spot. Another group of passengers will climb to the roof of the cars and make their way to the engineer's car that way. Sorta like VIII.

Yeah, I'm on board with providing the option.

In FFXI, it was quite popular for people to work on their fishing while riding the ferry. Having that option would be great for those who want to use it in that way. Or, just to take in the scenery (assuming they provide good scenery along the trip like they did in XI).

Then, you can also offer the option of "instant travel" for those who just want to get to the destination sooner than later. I feel that way about a lot of things that are debated as a purely binary "yes for everyone" or "no for everyone" issue.

They could implement some kind of activity to pass the time on airships, or trains, or ferries. They can implement content that's specific to those particular transportation systems. Not interested? Okay, fine. Just skip that and go straight to your destination.

I see no reason why it has to be an "either/or", "all or nothing" solution.

I think for some it may be not as easy to see why but there is defintely a reason. If there exists an option more efficent then another that option will be chosen most often even if players dont really want that option.

You just have to use it because people expect you to (you see similar arguments when talking about gear and talent trees and what is wrong with X stats and how it needs to be balanced Y for more - true - choice). Adding teleports is a superior choice so it takes away. Of course Yoshida could have made teleporting really expensive.. lol then it wont be superior. I'm assuming teleports in ARR will be like GW2 where the price is insignificant.

If you remove the free teleport to every zone, and then place in a system with travel time (preferably a comprise of short but existent times) then you dont have to worry about people talking about efficiency. People will use the airship because its the good choice not because once every 200 teleports by themselves they feel like it.

The airship implementation was more or less temporary. they said in the past that they intended to offer both a more expensive fast travel button (what they implemented first0 and an actual ride on an airship which is cheaper/free and offers a more flavorful experience for those who want it.

If they did trains like the one from FFVII where you could move along cars the talk to ppl I would be all game for it

Airship, train and ship rides without cut-scenes and a random chance encounter on either one dealing with someone or something attacking the ride... Oh yeah I'm down for that :D

I didn't understand what you mean. Yoshi-P could introduce places accesible ONLY via Ships/Trains/Airships. Can't understand what Warrior/Paladin/Make have to do with this...

EXAMPLE:

• Special Mine Area - By Train
• Air Floating Island - By Airship
• Island Closest to Heaven/Hell - By Ship

Yoshi-p said he would be adding where mobs would attack the airship and boats :) so you have that to look forward to. I think he even said he want to add where a rare mob would mob and give you a nice reward.

lol, that reminds me of those boat trips in which people would just stay in the cabin scared as hell because of Sea Horror/Proteus in FFXI, haha.

It's good to have that kind of things. Adds a little spice to travel.
