I would like to add to that question. How long before FF looks like that, and still plays like a FF game. I would hate to run down some more tunnels :p
2x GTX 770 SLI
6x i9 4,9 Ghz CPU
64 GB Ram
All information is here:

For the majority of us who can't speak Japanese though, that is:
GTX 680 graphics card, i7-3770K core processor, 3.5GHz, and 32 GB of RAM
Basically, a LOT of money, but apparently those specs aren't necessary to run it. If you want to go for such an expensive system though, it'll probably cost you around £1000! I wonder how high A Realm Reborn's specs can go.. if I have a system that powerful, it'd be nice to see how gorgeous you could make XIV look!
As far as I know the demo was running on a GTX 680.
Here's a nice hair demo.

As for when we can see games like this, well.. for consoles like Orbis [PS4], I think it's easily doable, but it's more a matter of how long it'll take for Square Enix to develop a game for a system like that, rather than whether they're capable of it. I don't know much about console specs to be honest, so the Orbis information has me baffled. Perhaps someone can make sense of it all?

How does this fare compared to the specs I posted above?

This is fascinating! I love how things like this evolve. I was just looking at how they are trying to make light reflecting off skin look more realistic (translucency etc.). The only thing that irks me is that a while ago someone pointed out how the withered old man in the desert had perfectly manicured nails.. now I can't unsee it!
Short answer is a very long time. Agni's Philosophy is a tech demo, which means they spent thousands if not tens of thousands of man hours perfecting every aspect of that demo. It's just not practical to spend that much effort on a game designed for release. That being said, as technology gets better, and techniques streamline the process, we will eventually see something of this quality. My Magic Moore's Ball says, 8-10 years, 6 if we are very lucky.
We will probably get something of a similar quality next generation, but obviously not so polished and fluid in presentation. It's wonderful having a visual representation of what to expect from the future, although it's painful knowing how long we must have to wait!
I saw this news last week:

Let me see how many I have...

lol :p
I mean, the rumored specs are using PC hardware. X86 AMD CPU and AMD Radeon GPU. Games are probably built on PCs anyways, so porting to PC isn't a problem. The biggest issue with PCs is still piracy to many publishers.
I hope FFXV is ported to PC so I don't have to buy another console.
To clarify my last post, it will take that long to make something of that quality in every aspect. If you want to know how long until we see games with graphics that good... probably 2-4 years, though I lean closer to the 4 years than the 2.
I am a computer scientist so I get what you mean. :)
Actually from what I have read this is the new engine for making games for the PS4. Apparently this is gonna be a scalable engine and is supposed to be the close cousin to ARRs engine. Also this kind of graphics can be achieved with off the shelf components now.
I wonder when the PS4 is gonna be coming out...and if Final Fantasy XIV: ARR will be playable on said console.
Best bet says Orbis and Durango will both be announced to varying degree at E3 this year. Given the usual production cycle, release will probably be somewhere between a year to two years after that. This cycle seems to have a quicker release phase than last cycle (WiiU was released the same year it was announced), so Orbis and Durango by the end of the year seems plausible.
Could be, Sony and Microsoft could pull the carpet out from under us and do a stealth launch and release close to the same time as the official announcement. I wouldn't hold your breath though. Companies like their hype. They'll want to advertise for at least a few months after the announcement, which hasn't happened yet, and probably wont until E3 in June.
Scalable graphics are basically different for any machines even FFXIV 1.xx was lagging on my MacBook Pro with the lowest settings, however, tried alpha and it was much much smooth (various settings) but not as good as my high-end desktop computer. The PS4 is going to have a different CPU/GPU than the PS3's cell processor. Due to the PS4's different CPU programmers have to rewrite the code to make it working proper. I think porting from PC version to the PS4 is more easier than porting from the PS3.
I think E3 is gonna start at June like every year.
