I believe this would be counter productive, and SE would lose a valuable load test.
EDIT: it also gives bored people a week to hack the DAT files.
interesting point, I also have a limited connection
How does SE handle this in the previous beta?
Or they would lose a lot of valuable testing time waiting for people with slow connection speeds to download the game. If they release the client early, everyone will still download it all at once I'm very sure of this. It won't make much difference to do it now, or to do it then. What difference would it make to do it on Feb. 7th than on Feb.14th (guess Beta Launch). People will still Download it all at once.
I'm sure the client will be available beforehand, but I can also almost guarantee that on release the client will get an update anyways.
I agree with this, but 300 kB? Are you from 1996?
This is a good time to have a buddy or a relative with a good internet connection. I have slow DSL at my house, so I pack my computer and go to my parents house when I need to DL a lot. Well into my 20's, but no shame in my game :p
I agree with OP.
Being allowed to download a big chunk of the client early would be nice. SE could then release a patch once it's live for any changes.
WARNING: Dat mining ahead.

They will release beta the exact way alpha was.
Yeah and even when they have all that information, what good would it do them if there is an NDA in place? It doesn't take long to dat mine anyhow. Either way you put it they can't release zero info without SE consent. It won't do them any good to get themselves banned.Quote:

I live out in the country and we can only get dsl here. 300 kb/s is what I download at with my supposedly 3mb dsl. So I'm right there with ya buddy.
It's not a matter of letting people wait.
The massive load the servers will be hit with 10 seconds after the e-mails go out is.
That test is almost more important that the whole of phase 1.
I'm betting that less that an hour after the patcher goes live, it bogs down and even those with 100 meg connections get less than 100k.
Equality achieved!
considering its all p2p (its still p2p right??) we will all feel the brunt of the massive wave of people trying to download it
No need
Get it while your at work or overnight
I don't believe it's p2p now.
I agree. I mentioned this in another thread yesterday (and was promptly misunderstood, I think...by at least Elexia). Then I was torn between being selfish and wanting to be completely ready when Beta goes live, and what a valuable test it could provide if everyone was downloading at the same time. I disagree that everyone will DL at the same time if it's available a week in advance - people might try, but they will wait til later if there is congestion (knowing they can't play anyway). Different time zones will also play a part.
I recently upgraded to RR Lightning, but for you Starlord, and others with limited connection speeds, I do hope they get it out early. :) Doesn't matter tho, they're gunna do what they're gunna do! I don't know how Alpha was handled in the first wave. Was the Alpha client available to DL prior to going live?
why do people have to be nosey and dat mine ? who cares what sin the files that you are not supposed to see.
Well there's sorta of a way of knowing!
- Now Delivering Alpha Tester Acceptance Mails! (11/26/2012) *First wave*
and Didn't Beta start the 30th?
If so that's a 4 day grace period to Download the Client, which is a good amount of time for even slow speeds.
For a pre release client there is no NDA, and even if there was there an NDA in place it's gonna be released soon anyhow right?
Google search ARR. Image search ARR.
Also it would kind of go against their network to not have a lot downloading at once, since they use P2P...so you'd want more people downloading since you only download the downloader from SE's site, the rest is P2P exchange basically so the more who start downloading the better it is in the long run compared to clogging a website download since not everyone is invited at once or will catch that the client is up, since you know "NDA."
It's not being nosy. People did it ever since the XI days because it's how you get information for websites more easily. Also, you can't really dat mine ARR atm until there's a few...things...completed.
NDA means you can't say you're in Alpha/Beta, so you can't go around screaming "CLIENT IS OUT!" etc.
first email wave for the world wide alpha test was sent on the 26th.. test started on the 28th.. so folks had about 2 days to download the client.
Honestly, I hope they just let use the Beta Client for retail, and release a big patch launch day.
Assuming they will send it ahead of time so everyone can have it downloaded and ready. If not it will be chaos. They don't need any more headaches.
3Mbps = 3 Megabits per second =/= 3MBps = 3 MegaBytes per second..
Big difference. 3Mbps is about ~350-400KBps.. That is why you are only getting 300KBps max when you download stuff.
On the other topic - I daresay the client download is a nice opportunity for SE to stress test their servers. Why would they miss that opportunity? It is a test afterall.
Just start it before you go to work / when you go to bed and wake up to it..
Technically that's not true. Software falls under a bizzare and not fully formed subsection of licencing law where you can own your computer, but technically not own the things on your computer. Strictly speaking, it is against the usability agreement to datamine and therefore you could be taken to court and fined for failing to conform to a legally binding contract. That being said, it will never happen. For one thing, it would be very difficult to prove (though not impossible), that someone has been mining game files. For another, it's not really worth their time to do so.
As for the act of datamining itself? It depends on the person. I don't datamine myself, but as a computer scientist, I can definately see the appeal of disecting a file and seeing how it works. For some it's a challange, for others, curisoity. Just like how there are plenty of hackers (though in this case I suppose I should use the correct term and say crackers) out there who are not malicious, they just do it to see if they can (though groups like annonymous give them a bad name in the press). For myself, I'm far too lazy to go to all that work.
I think that OP idea is a great one ... Also, I think it would be awesome to see the Beta go live on 2/14 ... 2.0 Beta on the 14th for FF14 2.0!!
