PS3 marketing

I must say i chuckle when I read Yoshi's posts or hear him comment that the marketing team will be unhappy that he has shown us some new art or screen grabs without them knowing. From the outside the marketing team dont seem to be doing too much right now to promote this game.
I was talking to my partner on the way to work and we thought that Square should consider starting to market ARR for PS3 players.
Square could easily release the End of an Era/New Beginning trailers on the Playstation store, perhaps create a couple of free static XMB XIV themes, maybe even charge for some moogle or chocobo dynamic XMB themes.
When phase 4 open beta starts, Square and Sony could perhaps open up PS3 beta access to Playstation Plus users (currently being offered by CCP for Dust 514) to try out the game and spread the word.
Regular posts on Sony's playstation blogs to keep the PS community informed of ARR's development progress would also be helpful to stir up some interest.
Just a thought anyway, as i know there are many people who are playing other online RPG's on playstation 3 such as White Knight Chronicles 2 and DCUO that are looking forward to a final fantasy MMO on playstation.

I doubt phase 4 beta would be only for playstation plus users, because it is the open beta. Everyone would be able to download the beta client to play it.

Ozz brings up some pretty good points. That would help give some good publicity for the game and head into the right direction.

I find it sad that they releasing it for ps3 i know they said they going to and they have to keep there word. But now hearing story of ps4 and the new xbox being release this year for 400$ it seem like they should start working on a ps4 version soon so once ps4 get big they ready to release for it also.

I would love a Dalamud theme for my XMB, if it was a dynamic theme that would be even better.

I wouldn't be surprised if MS announces "720" in the next few months, but I expect launch to be "next year". Most sensible rumors for PS4 have always been "2014", too.

FF14 ARR will already be on it's 1st expansion by then. ;)

Here's the thing though, they spend months of manpower and thousands on a PS4 version, then the PS4 is an absolute flop, they need to make that money back, on top of the losses from 1.0. A PS4 version will only start when it's worth making the game for it.

The PS4 could be a complete flop as well with what Sony has been rumoured to be wanting to do, two of these are not making it backwards compatible, if you can sell your 360, get a little cash out of it and still play your 360 games it makes the 720 a better buy than the PS4. Another reason is Sony have patenented methods to prevent preowned games being played on a console, this can be the absolute killer for the PS4, especially when you look at some price differences between preowned and new, when you are getting the same game.

I really want to see the PS3 game in action, by not showing it I feel like Square lacks confidence in it, and I start to worry it's going to be a horrible port.

SE is notorious for its lack of marketing, esp on the non-jp side. Its like that for most FF games. They get big spreads in magazine, commercials (1.0 even had a live action one), events, etc etc but outside Japan there are only trickles and maybe something here or there. Even the forums are like this, for every 20 jp dev posts there are 3 english and 1 german.

While it would be wonderful to see more advertising for ARR in general, much less the ps3 version. Unless SE marketing dept and execs take the plunge and decide it would be wise to do more international marketing its highly doubtful we will see much.

And with 1.0 being so negatively recieved Im surprised they havent done more promotion for 2.0 with beta just on the horizon. At least getting some information, adverts or teasers into gaming mags and sites would be good I would think. Help combat that 1.0 hate

I agree with this, let's take FFXI, I had no idea the game existed until WotG was out and a friend mentioned it (yes I did wonder what the gap was between FFX and FFXII but thought nothing of it.)

We need more ARR, advertisement for people who don't take the time to read everything about Final Fantasy.

I doubt either system would flop because they both have huge fanbases. I also think neither would have backwards compatibility because MS is going from PPC to AMD and Sony is going from Cell to AMD, totally different architecture so they would need to write a emulator for each game they want BC for which is too much work and they don't want people focused on playing their old games anyway.

I can't stress enough about word of mouth. I'd consider it a more valuable asset than commercial marketing.

I have to also agree that word of mouth is just as important as tv, Internet, magazine, etc etc advertisement. Personally I would say its more of the backbone to having a good strong sizeable player base, then with the new modern influx of advertisement. Which that type of advertisement just draws in the huge crowd then disappears when the hype and wow factor dies down. I see it as how much better does it get when your friends/ family etc etc can physically tell you in person or by other means that you need to play this game. Personally I can see someone read a bunch of reviews, see crap load of commercials & videos but the word of mouth is what most likely will draw someone in and keep them their.

Word of mouth is a good marketing technique, but relying on that alone is a very poor way to market a game. There are exceptions like Demon's Souls where word of mouth makes it into a million seller, but this game has failed. They really need to go above and beyond with interviews, ads, commercials, word of mouth, and more. They need to show people just how much the game has changed, and why it is better. I can't speak for you guys but their marketing thus far has been pretty lackluster (none) where I live.

I do agree with you that internet, tv, videos etc etc are good but what I was trying to bring out about word of mouth was that its was keeps playing for the long haul. Also I was trying to say that word of mouth is further enhanced when backed or coming from ff fanboys/girls.

I personally would like a smooth transition into 2.0 that being said I mean having a steady influx of new players which stay & play due to the hardcore ff fans word of mouth/ experience with the franchise. I rather not have a huge influx of players coming from the mass media advertisement then soon leave since the word of mouth to continue to play isn't their and they leave once the hype/ wow factor is dead.

Final Fantasy XIV's E3 unveiling will remain the most damning piece of media for the series, in my opinion.

I'm interested to see how they'll target the Playstation 3 audience when they begin their media blitz.

I heard alot about xi when it came out from friends but the only thing I saw otherwise was a small blurb in a gaming mag and a (poor) review on G4 or whatever that channel was called at the time. I didnt know anything about it until I sought it out on my own and I most likely wouldnt have done so if I wasnt a fan of the series.

I would have started loving xi much sooner and so would have many ppl who never played the game at all

Word of mouth is only part of knowing someone who plays. It's also a constant reminder to try the game, and very importantly, motivate you to get through a difficult learning curve. (FFXI certainly. ARR needs to be friendly to the novice gamer and ones who are used to faction-based, single-class MMOs.) And once you start, if you can meet and "sing many songs" of your exploits in-game, it could lead to years of subs.

Advertising has its place too, but I wonder if SE would market ARR just like any other game. TV ads generate huge launch spikes which can really hurt MMOs, and the gamers they attract may not stay long, when the next game ad blitz catches their eye. Plus the monthly fee is unusual and a hard sell.

SE has changed a lot since 1.0 launched. I look forward to seeing how SE advertises this.

I think they should make limited edition PS3 bundles with a cool ARR skin or casing. I'll pre-order that since I need a second PS3 for the bedroom :)

the word is xbox and ps4 being release this year which is crazy i think it's going to fail bad for both console being release so early and quick

i understand all the issue of both ps4 and the new xbox the preowned game would only happen if new Xbox also does it if they don't sony wont do it because they lose people for the new xbox because it make more sense for people. both company dislike preowned game and they lose big money out of it so i see it happening at some point in time,. let's hope ps4 does not fail because i see ffxiv not working so great by the time we have a 2# pack for ffxiv at least by now ps4 would be good enough and enough people have it for SE to release a ps4 version/

Did Final Fantasy XI already come installed on the FFXI PS2 bundle?

That would be a nice touch if this sort of deal were possible.

If I remember correctly, it was pre-installed, as the game and hdd were a bundle. but it came with the software discs as well. Also there was a good bit of marketing around my area for XI back when it released, even TV commercials. So maybe it was a regional thing, where they did more marketing where it seemed more likely to be purchased.

@firon will if it was not becuase of us telling SE how to do there jobs they wont be a forums to start with. Or did you forget how bad SE was before FFXIV fail so bad due to them trying to do it all by themself with the same mindset of 10years ago of play my game dislike it i don't care deal with it. Not saying the OP is right just saying sometime SE need to be told what to do for the best doing marketing on the ps3 right now does not seem best to me tho seem pretty dumb to do any marketing so far from release.
