Alpha First Look: Video 8 – Instanced Dungeons

Join our heroes as they take on the Tam-Tara Deepcroft in the eighth and final installment of our Alpha First Look video series. In this instanced dungeon, adventurers will meet with myriad opponents and obstacles to overcome before they may proceed further. The most spectacular spoils are granted only to those who venture into the deepest depths and emerge victorious.

* The instanced dungeon in this video is designed for low level players. Targeting and actions are demonstrated with the mouse instead of keyboard for greater clarity.

* The battle system is currently undergoing significant revision, including changes to all damage algorithms and the claim system.

Not for me huh? Clearly from a few posts, you some random guy on the internet has a total grasp on what I like and dislike. You like it, that's fine. There are people who dislike the core of this system based on what has been shown. Hoping for revisions (and there will be) isn't a bad thing. Telling, or advising people to go play something else is a sure way to make this game fall on yet another sword and die.

Also read my above post again. I said "We ALL" will be playing another game IF XIV fails.

They will add the limit break system we know that. If you are wanting an action combat system... probably should just give up hope and go somewhere else. Chances of them changing the battle system besides adding the missing elements is very slim.

Knowing the missing elements WE KNOW they are adding and the fact that the game is missing most its classes I see nothing wrong with the combat system atm.

On a positive note I am loving the design. I just hope the difficulty is being rebalanced once tank classes and such are being added. Sorta seems really easy on that sub-boss. For now I will assume it is nerfed with the lack of tanks in the game.

Yet another assumption. Boy you sure are good at that. I would love a FFXI-2 actually, but i'm not asking for it anymore as that dream has been dead for a few years. I want something different from the norm, and this generic garbage they have been showing is nothing that hasn't been done before. Final Fantasy in the title isn't going to sell this game to people anymore. Quality will. One thing Final Fantasy XI and XIV (in time) did well was having different and creative battle systems.

Now time for me to make an assumption since that seems to be the game we're playing. Are you a mindless Yes Man willing to lick Square-Enixs boots and defend them to death? There mere thought of someone disliking an aspect of their game sure pisses you off doesn't it?

Get over it. Your subscription isn't worth more then mine, nor is mine yours. I'll be here so get used to seeing me.

I love ffxi i went and play it again few months back and i have to say no thanks. I would love if they use more stuff from FFXI and make it new there noting wrong from using what you have and rebuild it.

lol we all know that blizzard new MMO going to be a better WoW-clone and why should it not if it really 100% diff people would not play it. I'll enjoy ffxiv more if they add more and more from all games not just ffxi and wow and that what they doing which is good

Different for the sake of being different doesn't make something "fun" or "good." What specifically do you think should be added to combat that feasibly won't be there? Seriously, do you really think they are going to turn this into an action combat system? We still have multiple jobs/classes, Limit Break system, and combo system to add. What exactly else would actually add to the system? Please say you don't think adding action crap is what is needed.

That said neither was particularly amazing when fighting level 15 monsters at level 20. You had barely enough skills to warrant more than AA them to death.

Dungeon looks well put together. Can't wait to try it out. I wonder if there will be background music along with the battle theme. I understand it is alpha and may not be in there for now. If so, I wonder if dungeons will get their own theme, or will have one set theme like the old FFXIV.

Also, is a timer really necessary now? Not many other MMO's practice this in instanced dungeons. Some people like to take time to figure things out instead of being bound by a timer. Speed run can be calculated without it and since speed runs don't determine reward anymore, I don't see the need for the timer at all. Again, this may be there for alpha purposes only, but that is simply my take on the timer.

So you enjoy playing things you don't like? i'm just using common sense when saying that if you don't like it the solution is quite easy...go play something closer to what you want in your perfect game...because FFXIV:ARR ain't going to be it ...I'm not a "Yes Man" SE just happened to come up with a concept i really really liked...if it was different from this then i would be the one complaining ...all the issues FFXI and 1.0 had are fixed in ARR ..can't ask for more

Well I wouldn't go so far as to say "best" because he hasn't placed a truly acceptable product on the market: yet. I do however respect him for the fine tuning he did on the original game based on that feedback (that's right, the evil feedback).

He definitely has the potential to be a great producer. I certainly like his open nature. One thing I definitely will compliment about the video was fantastic graphics, and awesome sound. Two things Square hardly ever fail at.

Wow people are just so incredibly disrespectful anymore and this is just getting ridiculous on this forum. I don't understand the reason of getting all upset "because someone was wrong on the internet". Why can't we all just get along, and remember that everyone has an opinion and it should be respected as feedback, whether or not you agree. Any ideas, suggestions, complaints are just feedback and not "SE you need to do this!" (as if they ever would).

I ask for everyone to drop their pitchforks because this community is taking a turn for the worst in many respects. When the game failed because of launch, and had low subscribers, why in gods name are you attacking someone on the forums who disagreed with you and encouraging to stop playing/visiting the forums/caring about FFXIV? It's just counter productive. Accept that everyone has different opinions and don't flame them for it. I'm seriously getting tired of reading all this attacking one another every thread I see.

That said, as a person who played 1.0 everyday since dec 2010, I don't like the pace of ARR's battle speed, nor do I think the animations are long enough to really enjoy the eye candy of the detail the devs put into ws animations/spells . BUT I have faith that this could/may change with beta or could be fixed completely upon final release.

Yea, well, the forums have been shit since they launched. You think these forums are bad? You should see the......"other" one.

All I will say is the A LOT of people are not happy with the combat system in its current, ALPHA, form. Beta will add missing elements so I would just recommend people waiting for BETA. If you are unhappy about something in Beta be vocal about it. Constructive criticism is going to be what makes this game amazing. What will NOT help make ARR amazing is letting every small upgrade from 1.0 blind you from really fixing problems or even making something that works so much better.

Oh and here is some loving advice to all the lovely testers for Beta. If you are unhappy about something and wish to make it better please avoid this kinda post.....

Oh and before I go to wait for some forum hate that is ABSOLUTELY necessary because I hurt someones feelings with my gentle post.........I will just say remember when you see someone just tearing into things about Alpha/Beta about everything they hate or think is bad. It is because they are afraid 1.0 will happen again. Like most of us they prob did Alpha/Beta before and assumed shit would get fixed just to find out how wrong they were. They wouldnt post unless deep down inside they really cared about ARR success, to us and for SE. They are just angry over something that should not have happened and they know the new team is trying to make it all better for us. So try and cut them a break, give em a cuddle :D

What don't you like about the pace? From the videos, it seems perfectly acceptable. If anything, 1.0 was a bit too slow in terms of combat.

Maybe I'm just used to 1.0's pace? /shrug

At the same time, it's one thing to watch it and another to play it. I have faith it'll be awesome in the end and I'm sure I'll play regardless :P

It seems faster because so far the weaponskills only have the Global Cooldown of 3 seconds so combat would seem faster instead of WS having specific CDs to stop spamming them.

Again, its Alpha right now and is missing some combat elements that will be introduced in Beta. So as of right now there isnt too much reason to not spam the same WS but I am sure with more abilities and combos playing more importance that will change.

I guess to sum it up ARR is a wow clone in a lot of categories such as ui layout, combat speed and such. You dont even need to play Alpha to see the resemblances in the videos. So combat is obviously VERY diff from how it was end of 1.0 but again Beta will have more of the combat revisions in place plus 15 more lvls of abilities. Having one combo and 3-4 attacks doesnt give much to go on, obviously :D

Again, WoW mechanics is the rough draft of what ARR is being built upon but that doesn't need to be negative. Take whats good, what really screams WoW universe can stay in WoW and we flood ARR with all kinds of FF story, settings, classes, jobs, summons, etc.

I can promise you I will be there in Beta complaining on Simian Thrash crappy graphic if its still the same! :D Dragon Kick forever!

Can someone please explain to me why FFXIV 1.0's slow battle system with long cooldowns on almost every ability was so appealing to you people who hate the new faster paced battle system?

Honestly I hated the battle system in 1.0 it was too slow and it felt like a lot of sitting around waiting for auto attack to fill TP.

I see nothing wrong with the pace... I always thought the battle system would be better with an slight increase in pace.

But, the dungeon. I like how it's designed, can't wait to try it out. I hope there will be some catchy song in the background though. Really liked that one song that plays in 1.0.

You guys are so busy arguing about the battle system that nobody noticed Cthulu is the boss of that dungeon.
