I'll like the sky to look amazing at night, but at the same time I think it is a good idea to make nighttime eerie as the other thread suggested. A nice bitter sweet relationship regarding nighttime would be perfect. Agreed?
I agree there are lots of stars out in 1.xx version. but to me it looked dull and boring until Dalamud started getting closer. That is when it impressed me, so I'll like to see more of that in 2.0
I'll share two pictures that I hope the development team can get an idea of what I'm proposing.

Funny I was thinking about linking skyrim photos when I read the title..
In 1.0 the night sky was made of moving pixel blocks XD.. I really think they loved the idea of pixel blocks - their flora was made of them too XD
I would really like to look at the sky both night and day and enjoy - so +1'd :P -

I liked watching the auroras after Dalamud started to get closer. Would love some semi-close galaxies, comets, and occasional meteor showers.

12-01-2012, 03:00 AMAndrienI agree, and the bold part would make a cool weather effect.Quote:

I think that's a pretty good idea. They have a lot to work with in terms of how the sky can look and what effects this due to the nature of the world the game takes place in. I'd imagine that abnormalities in the night sky that in turn look quite beautiful in terms of game scenery could be easily explained by Aether disruptions and/or Bahamut Mega/Giga/Teraflare having some sort of effect on the sky.
That or they could just make the night sky look pretty "for the fun of it", but I know the good people at SE tend to like having a purpose behind things like sky effects. I will admit the 1.x night Sky for most of the version's life (in other words, before Dalamud began to noticeably effect the sky in-game) was indeed bland and didn't give much reason to ever tilt your camera up. Even that in itself was a pain at times with the way camera controls worked. ^^;
I'd be all for something pretty to see when I (accidentally) tilt my camera up. xP -

I wonder if events occurring in game will be visible in the sky. Maybe events such as FATE, or some of those big mama jama primal fights that pop up once every two weeks they were talking about. Wouldn't that be cool if you're just walking along, and then notice off in the distance bright lights as if there's a battle going on?
-
12-01-2012, 06:43 AMsyntaxliesI was thnkng something like that, rift has events like fate were the whole sky and zone transform and everyone has to go there to close the riftQuote:

Yeah, I'd love to see something along the lines of the 'milky way trail' which can't be seen in real life anymore.

I would love to have the auroras come back periodically :D

I loved the aurora's and meteor showers from Dalamud. Also absolutely adore Skyrims night sky. I do hope they continue giving players reasons to look up and enjoy the night sky scenery as much as their designing the ground scenery to be enjoyed.

12-01-2012, 08:35 AMNaraku_DiabolosThere are places where you can see the Milky Way trail. I have an app on my iPhone for Nat Geo's National Parks, and you can see the Milky Way in Haleakala, Hawaii, and Joshua Tree National Parks.Quote:

Totally agree with this.
Would be awesome if they put also some actual constellations in the night sky, that represent primals and twelves. -

I'm an avid photographer IRL and this carries over into my video games. One of my favourite things is taking screenshots of scenery, so I definitely would love to see a breathtaking sky in ARR!

In response to the OP, I'd really like to see a blend, as you mentioned, between the beauty and eeriness of night, and much more.
Does anyone remember the old lore posts based on texts in the Arcanist's Guild or whatnot that mentioned monthly/annual elemental cycles relevant to crafting bonuses? Something like that, but based on lore that's not just found in one old tome and unchanging thereafter. There'd be hints at it throughout many worldly-connected side-stories and the like, building with relationships with NPCs with relevant knowledge. You've worked for an astrologist in Coerthas for a while... well, you might be drinking together on some rocks at the summit by his hamlet discussing when the next meteor shower might come down. Next week you set out with mining gear and materia to make use of the fallen rocks before whatever magic might be in them dissipates.
A botonist could tell you when during the moon cycle certain herbs will grow on the back of Goobues during the night, which you gather if sneaky enough. You can expect wights to roam certain areas at night, but there's still another factor somewhere to their movement and frequency, and its results learn-able, and the factor eventually understandable.
The examples could go on and on; my point here is that I'm hoping that I can look forward to something special during each less normal part of the day, hopefully in some way that won't feel like a schedule of places I need to be.
These events shouldn't be known to all, nor should they be consistently scheduled; I doubt anyone wants to have the immersion of learning, as a character, when something will occur only to find an online calender that says "meteor shower - March 21st".
Well, that's surprisingly ranty, so I'll stop there. I hope I've gotten some of my point across despite my tiredness. -
12-01-2012, 10:51 PMGagushoOMG, I'm going to have to go there. I really miss seeing all the stars when I went camping when I was little.Quote:

12-02-2012, 12:12 AMNahaaraDepends on where you live, if you live in a big city like New York or w/e then yeah, definitely. You can still get a good view of it though if you go into the country where there isn't any light pollution to speak of.Quote:

I would love this as well! ^^ I was abolutely captivated by the sky when they added the aurora's lol I kept running into rocks and trees because I couldnt stop gawking at it.
In my FFXIV tribute, I even made it a point to show this within the first 20 seconds XD -

sadly, the quality was ruined a bit due to the way I had to save my file T_T (long story) -
12-03-2012, 02:13 PMMuddIt would actually be cool if a flash of light, or maybe white or colored streak of light shot into the air as a Primal was defeated.Quote:

12-03-2012, 10:24 PMMatsumeNot to burst anyone's bubble but I actually live on the island of maui that Haleakala volcano constitutes and have spent many sleepless nights staring at that exact view. I would just like to point out that, although the milky way is visible to the naked eye at the summit, that image is not. In order to capture such a stunning photo you need one hell of a camera probably with a very long exposure. Although the summit site is a phenomenon to behold in all its might and glory, similar shots are only possible by manmade lens.Quote:
