Yes we know this will essentially be a WoW "clone" in the same sense that FFXI was an EQ "clone", however unlike XI, XIV will be directly taking the base systems that WoW uses that everyone else decides to mimic.
We've seen this interview, this is old news and not what he meant.
I really deeply hope that this games doesnot become a wow clone
How many times must this be repeated? @.@
BRRAAWWWK!! POLLY WANNA CRACKER!
He was merely suggesting FFXIV should have done what FFXI did. They examined Everquest and expanded upon its concepts. Neither of the games systems is EXACTLY alike, but you can say FFXI is more advanced than EQ because it both used and upgraded what good it had going for it.
Had FFXIV done the same thing with the current major success during its development, it too could have used and expanded upon the current major success. And I think that is exactly what they are doing with ARR.
Doing that prevents you from making a MMO that is below the current MMO players standard.
oh no not WoW!111!one!1...Damn them and their success!!! Damn their user friendly and stream lined systems!! ARGH! I hate having a massive population to play with!...really grinds my gears...
ya me neither, I hope it isnt fun at all. I hope this is a unique snowflake experience just like that great 1.0 ver.....oh wait nvrm. Trolling aside, Just because some systems that have been proven successes in the genre are being utilized, it doesnt mean the game is going to be a "clone". Certain systems just make the game more enjoyable, and to give WoW credit, with current tech there arent many different ways to do what they did. They really pioneered a lot of user friendly systems that dont have any real need to expand upon today. Is the game perfect? hell no, I find FFXIV much more engaging, but at the same time I respect WoW and what it did for the genre as a whole. Hating it just because it is popular does not make you look cool, just ignorant.
Things that can stay in wow:
Cartoon graphics
Redicoulous mounts and pets(we have goobue' let's hope it doesn't get out of control)
Cash shop
Redicoulous art design.
I've never played it but as long as these things not come to arr then I'm fine with a lot of other stuff
Telling an MMO designer to not play WoW is like telling a history writer to not read Michener
Of course, FFXIV could be at their level:
Dungeons, Raid sizes, and reward systems
Ease of getting into party content with cross-server content finder
Ease of control
Player made addons
Vanity system
Insert more things here
And exceed their level:
Far better and non-cartoony graphics
Better dungeons, raids, and rewards systems
More things for the solo player to do besides friggin dailies
FATE system
Limit Breaks!!!!!
Perfect Play (name tentative)
Better crafting and gathering (well, was already better than WoW in 1.0)
Insert more things here
Sorry, there are plans for more mounts :D
Yeah, given the chocobo raising system is, obviously, exclusive to chocobos, I don't see non-standard mounts being anything more than rare vanity pieces, which is fine. Personally, I think this sort of borrowing from the big contenders like WoW is a dangerous game, but one you have to play if you want to be successful.
Standing on the shoulders of a great predecessor is common sense, but it's all together too easy to end up falling off and just looking like a fool. I have confidence that at the very least, Yoshi-P will make a game that I will want to play. I do sometimes worry about how many people will be joining me though.
Rokien seems to have rubbed off onto Elexia. How touching.
World of Warcraft has some incredible art design, it's just ruined by the in-game engine.

I dislike the graphics too, but not because they're "cartoony." I just don't like the super abstract look to everything. Cartoony graphics don't make a game bad, just look at The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.
What i wonder is why people say FFXI is a clone of WOW when
FF11:Release on PC
PlayStation 2
JP May 16, 2002
NA March 23, 2004
Windows (PC)
JP November 7, 2002
NA October 28, 2003
EU September 17, 2004
And the graphic was good
and now with FF14 is even better graphic
And WOW:release
AUS / NA November 23, 2004
And the graphic was crap and childish style and now its still crap
Why do we care if they use some engine of the same who care i dont see dwarfs, orc , and other.
final fantasy use their character they got for a long time
well as long as they realize that ffxi whether it was a game of final fantasy plus eq ..it became a mmo that stood the test of time. if eq makes a new mmo i bet it will fail like gw2 because it is thinking the same way yoshi is. that they need to be this wow clone with a twist.
ffxi is a successful mmo no matter what it took from what game. it is now and will always be considered a success on it's own and should be used as a template for other mmo's including ffxiv itself. when people look at mmo's and decide to take the good out of wow they should also be looking at ffxi and what it had and did to make it a success. wow had the numbers but that recipe was probably a concoction that no mmo will make again with the same ingredients.
but in the end i think this is what yoshi will do, i'm not worried about his thoughts on this (too much) as i think it will be wow with final fantasy twist but i think final fantasy is also ffxi.
this was my only hopes for a mmo that i can possibly love again like ffxi and i'm still holding onto that idea till yoshi forces me out of this mmo with the hate i have for all the other mmo's i've played that are just missing what i want from my mmo's. everything i see looks good, but i'm half and half from what i see content wise and direction wise. but in the end 24man events go a long way aka crystal towers so they have probably a good amount of time b4 i realize they are totally going in a crappy direction and people start leaving.
Honestly, I didn't get far in WoW but I wasn't a fan of the character design or universe. No problem there with FFXIV. Bring the rest including the PvP.
i ran back to ffxi after 2months. reality was it was empty zones by the time i joined it. i played solo all the way to rank 40's other then the dungeon in the city and though it was fun it wasn't impressive. how can you compete with full linkshell events with up to 64man groups. and 6man grinds for exp rather then solo. i'm all about the party play and progression in mmo's and though i didn't make it to endgame it wasn't half of what ffxi was.
Lol EQ next would like to have a word with you. Look it up. It's going to be a sandbox, as different from wow as you can get. FF mmo fans, more so than others, seem to be blind to the rest of the genre and put ffxi up on a pedestal. Ffxi was my first true love in the mmo space, however I'm not completely ignorant towards the rest of the genre.
People need to stop saying that ARR is going to be a WoW clone. What yoshida made his staff do is wonderful. If they truly want to create a successful MMO then they need to research what is successful NOW, and right now WoW is still the most successful MMO. The ARR team is taking what's worked in WoW, and making it better and fit the Final Fantasy franchise. I'm sick and tired of hearing ARR is gonna be a WoW clone. get real people. If you honestly believe that crap you know nothing about the video game industry.
thats what i tell them all time. I pissed one of my co-worker he love WOW and he try to be in the beta test but he didn't get any but me i received it when i don"t play and never did i only subscribed for diablo3 beta
So he was piss off cos he asked me for it and i said sorry i deleted the email cos its a crap game lol
i got from them : beta invite ,a email with a code that give free collection game and if i subscribe they send me it its still on my account of blizzard lol,
and i juste received this
An exclusive Obsidian Nightwing, shapeshifting you into a flying mount that can carry one passenger, when your friend pays for 60 days of subscription time*.
• 30 days of FREE World of Warcraft game time when your friend pays for 30 days of subscription time**.
lol
they are losing people alot lol hahahahahahahaha see it is getting crapy
i couldn't play it for week let alone a whole year. perhaps yoshi may want to look at other psychological forms of torture instead.
I glue to final fantasy game ..and will always be glue to them till they stop making game ..(hope they never stop :D)
You seem awfully sure of yourself.
Have you played the game? Do you actually *know* how they've approached it? Have you been in design meetings or somehow privy to what they're doing?
Or, are you just hoping out loud, expressing what you hope it will be, or wont' be?
Are you trying to convince yourself, or us?
The more I learn about ARR, the more remarks I see Yoshi make about its gameplay and the way they're integrating things, the more concerned I become that they actually are making more like a WoW clone than not like one. However, that remains a concern because unlike you, Nox, I don't have a crystal ball allowing me to declare exactly what ARR will and won't be, nor the arrogance to believe I can divine it either way.
As for the remark made in another post about "SE doing the best thing by copying the most successful MMORPG out there, WoW"... that line of thinking has gottne a number of other MMO devs into trouble because they tried to do the same thing. With very few exceptions, the response from players has been "yeah... no. If we wanted to play WoW, we'd just play WoW".
I could understand the first several MMOs to come out in 2 or 3 years following WoW's release to fall into that trap since they only had WoW's success to go on. But you'd think that after that first wave of "us too" MMOs came out and performed underwhelmingly, that developers (and even investors and bean counters) would begin to see that, while it sounds great on paper, "copying WoW" isn't necessarily the best approach.
The only P2P MMO I can think of that has been heavily influenced by WoW and has managed to hold its own with a healthy subscriber base is Rift. All the others have either been reduced to insignificance, have gone the "f2P to save our asses" route, or closed up altogether.
In the meantime, the industry is slowly but steadily beginning to realize that relying on the WoW model of "quick progression through content-centric gameplay" is not sustainable anymore. Not in this time when people expect to be level cap in a week no matter how many levels there are, or how much other content there is up to that point. Content that takes a developer months to create will be completed in days, sometimes hours by gamers upon its release.
It's being realized, now, that for a MMO to maintain a sustainable flow of gameplay for players in the long-term, it has to have more "game systems" where the players become part of the content... and not just "content created by the developers/designers". That could be PvP, it could be housing or any kind of player/community-driven activity. It can be a political territory control system, etc.
It doesn't have to be a sandbox, but it does need a meaningful impact on the game and its players (in the context of the game world, etc). Grinding raids and instances for points to buy gear with is not a "system"... it's content designed to keep people playing "just a bit longer". It's not a system designed to keep people entertained indefinitely.
The goal is to have people playing the game continuously out of enjoyment for the gameplay itself. It should never be based on "how many carrots can we dangle in front of players and how long can we keep stringing them along, before they get sick of it?"
So, while I hope - sincerely hope - that I'm wrong, I'm beginning to get a really bad feeling about ARR. I think Yoshi might be swinging too far in the other direction, based on what he's revealed, and various "one off" remarks he's made in interviews and articles.
Just my two gil's worth.
Sorry, never going to Kotaku.
yeah yoshi's remarks lately feel like they are purposely said in the direction of those players who hate casual play, that hate wow, that hate solo gameplay over party, that want ffxi type game play, that enjoy grinds or very long progressions. yoshi seems like he is hinted that no, we are selling out to the highest bidders and that "wow is the way to go"...he is wrong if this is what he is hinting to. i'm only 33 and though i'm getting tired of mmo's and how they suck ..even if i quit playing them i'll enjoy laughing as every mmo fails for another 20years if they don't get this mentality out there heads.
but yeah i still don't see from the footage so far that i'm seeing a wow clone. it still looks like a fun mmo. and i'm still excited to play this bad boy at launch for sure. i just hope i don't end up quitting in 6months with a stale taste in my mouth.
