Why didn't they wait until 2.0 was ready to shut down 1.0?

I was just wondering this lately. It looks like the shutting down of 1.0 was on schedule with the timeline of patches and end of the world changes presented in the road map earlier this year. But if the testing and development of 2.0 was pushed back a few months from the projected release date, why didn't they leave 1.0 up and wait for the world to end with that setback in mind? Or at least wait until Beta testing was complete or nearing completion to announce the end the world?

I am thinking they should have left the final save date as tentative as the release date planned for 2.0 in order to have a smooth transition. Does anyone know of the reason? I'm not trying to be petty or complain, I'm just wondering if there is anyone else wondering this, and what the reason might be?:confused:

Also there is the issue of converting the data over - it may have been too costly to create a system that converts data on the fly (converting up to a point and then maintaining a convert after each log off or w.e) and as ARR is priority they redirect resources as efficiently as possible (and this what you have now).

With what they have they are doing the best they can.

While I can also understand the comments saying that it's fine not to make more updates and they wish we had waited until the last minute to save, as someone who operates MMOs, I felt that continuing to leave a world that is not updated wasn't even an option.

It's coming back online next week if you want to keep playing it.

There are plenty of reasons why a Final Save was conducted. They had to do it at some point or it would delay the release of the game, because exporting the data to the new version is going to take a long time (according to them). The recently posted Yoshi P translations explain this further.

Good I rather the Dev team just focus on 2.0 than waste anymore time on 1.0

I love Yoshi-P.

They shut it down "early" because they need the actual physical servers to test 2.0 and host the alpha / beta tests.
It's not exactly "cheap" to host, administer, and maintain an MMORPG.

Given they said some weeks ago they'll be re-opening the V1 servers on a 'absolutely no support' basis for as long as enough people (Yoshi mention 30%) want to play, then your suggested reason clearly doesn't come into it.

Months ago, I envisioned this topic. I've watched the days crawl by until you Uriah, rose to your destiny and typed out your post. It was like watching gravity slowly pull a piece of space debris down to the Earth in a fiery crash. Carry on.

I think they also didn't want EVERY old player having all maxed out and running around in 7/7 relics with only triple melded / darklight gear, because that's what would have happened if the servers kept online for 4+ months with no updates.

Ummm, FFXI usually goes MONTHS and MONTHS without content update and it doesnt seem to be an issue over there, so why would that be an issue over here? That answer seems like a politician answer, he just made a bad call and doesnt want to admit it.

Because FFXi has 10 years worth of content.....

I had the same thought and the answer that came to my mind was that Yoshi-P simply has a different standard for how to run an MMO. Since day one he's been a very different kind of director from Tanaka. Makes sense to me that some things the old XI team under Tanaka felt was "Acceptable" Yoshi-P refuses to even consider.

Different teams, obviously. Also XI has a lot more to do.

I have a feeling that if Yoshi-p somehow did leave the servers until the end people would be bitching all the same about lack of content lack of updates etc. It's a damned-if-he-does damned-if-he-doesn't situation :p

And of course porting character data takes time, so either way, we'd be off the game for awhile.

Well anyway, my main beef with this was that I was under the assumption that the transition into 2.0 had a goal of very little down time for us players between 1.0 ending and the distribution of 2.0 software. I was sort of expecting the final save date on the 29th and the end of the world on the 11th would have been their time needed to transfer over character information, which was why character data wasn't being saved.

I understand Murphy's law with everything taking longer than expected and how things go wrong. I'm not upset that 2.0 is taking longer and I appreciate all the hard work that the developers are putting into the game and how much they still have yet to get ready. But that being said, if they projected the release date being two months behind schedule, the end of the world should have been pushed back to meet that transition.

In the meantime I know the game would probably have been in limbo for those two months with no updates planned for the game, but I personally still had a lot I could have been doing in-game to unlock some achievements or save up some money for 2.0. I know the decision won't change, and the die has been cast, but it is still something I will look back on and wonder about. I think the decision on September 29th to end billing kind of set the end of the world date in stone though. And that's getting back into the territory of not knowing what setbacks would be coming in the future. I hope alpha testing is going well. I can't wait to see more on it.

I'd rather they end it when they could so they could focus on ARR (which they stated is what happened), so that they could catch up on their 2 month backlog. Had they not cut off the save when they did, I'm sure they'd fall further behind and we'd have a 2015 release (jk but yeah..)

A lot of us would have liked more time, but it is what it is.

You really think they would use the same server structure/hardware to host a game where 2/3 of the original playerbase won't even bother logging in for a considerable period?
