Make it happen SE.
I don't understand why they would even have to consider whether to implement it or not. :/

It's all about market reaction, regardless how they feel about it they obviously want to alienate the smallest percentage of potential customers possible.
Personally most RPG players seem pretty open to the idea, but it could have implication with being able to release the game in certain areas of the world who ban Same sex mariage.
I support it. This is 2012, it's pretty much a basic right now lol. I think there will be a more negative impact if they decided not to do it.
lol nice pic, I laughed but don't see them doing that. Not like I care. Marry who you want people, just be happy and don't troll on the forums. :)

I'd be really good for publicity too (: Although I think Rift beat everyone to allowing same-sex marriage.
As a gay player I would like for it to be an option, even if I dont get the chance to use it
Typical western-world people thinking that they are the only culture on earth...
SE has to take all markets into account. To the proponents of the idea, it may be a nifty addition, but to the opponents, it could be a deal-breaker and jeopardize future sales of the entire franchise.
IMO, the safest thing to do is if they just didn't put a marriage system in at all (let's face it, MMO marriages are equal parts cute, creepy, and meaningless).
I am gay and I would appreciate the option.
Thats a great point, I mean we bicker and fight about races and classes in game and getting equal treatment, so they leave some things we might want to see OUT Of the game to cover this..
Since they cant give their playerbase equal treatment in this regard, leave it out until you make up your mind.
I do understand from a business standpoint why they would consider how people outside of the game would feel about it, but it is A GAME. They can allow non-human cat people to marry giant ogre people and thats ok, but toss in gender and it changes it up... gets too real... (sarcasm there) lol
Im all for it...its a fantasy world after all....Skyrim did it with hardly any fuss, so has other games.
It will be a chance for those who are perhaps challenged against the idea of same-sex marriage to find out that, hey, there may just be nothing wrong with it, it involves the love of two consenting human adults who just happen to be of the same gender.
Now only if the stupid draconian folks in the parliament and govt of my home country of Singapore will realise this, we're still one of the very few countries in the world where
"Section 377A of the Penal Code
Any male person who, in public or private, commits, or abets the commission of, or procures or attempts to procure the commission by any male person of, any act of gross indecency with another male person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 2 years."
FACEPALM
Having nothing to do with graphics, mechanics, playable content, music, sound effects, player statistics, game plot, itemization, game balance, release schedules, character customization, difficulty levels, animations, lore and other relevant game elements, I will take no position on this issue.
If people are so opposed to gay marriage that they won't subscribe to an mmo then I will happily not have them tainting the servers with their bigotry.
Well, those sure are some broad generalizations.
Honestly though, if people are that put off by something as minute and "meaningless" a feature as the option for same-sex marriage; so much so that it becomes a deal-breaker in buying the game, then that's pretty much as absurd as it can get.
I do hope they realize that out of all the "supported" countries, Japan has probably the least legal support for LGBT. So if they're fine with putting it in then everyone else would be better than fine...
The easy thing would have been to add it in, launch and no one would bloody notice for months. Then just take it out for the Chinese release.
Equal in game marriage or no in game marriage at all. Also, XIV has quite a big number of gay players.
If Se had just implemented marriage regardless of the sex of our chars no one wouldve noticed and no fuss wouldve been made. Now this whole same sex thing will just get blown out of all proportion.
I think its funny we are discussing it in the sense that we are worried about offending people, lets look at this from a logical standpoint since we want to take things to the point of how it will effect real people.
OFFENSIVE THINGS
1 -Violence (check)
2 - Sexism (check) boobs lets make them bouncy because thats important lol
3 - War (check)
4 - Murder/death (check)
5 - Inappropriate story dialogue (check)
6 - In game storyline racism (check)
7 - Power corruption (check)
8 - Animal abuse (check)
but hey, same sex marriage is what we should worry about when it comes to offending people
Yeah I'm not sure why people automatically think that if someone goes "yay gay marriage!" they're from North America. Considering it's uh....... everywhere.
I know quite a few people from countries that are heavily against homosexuality (the government, that is). How do they feel about it? They support it.
Just because a "country" doesn't support it doesn't mean the people don't.
How many other offensive in game violations do we see on videogames? But this issue is the hot topic? I am certain there are lots of questionable things in this game that may violate moral code in other countries but this one seems to be important enough for SE to single out.. I am assuming to start debates like this..
Because all of those other thing happen in Japan while this one not
It shouldn't be so much of a problem not allowing same-sex marriages now that there will be male and female versions of every race, unlike 1.0 and XI. At least not for me since I'll be changing to male cat.
Not that I mind same-sex marriage btw, I wanted it before, I don't mind it now. There will still be people that rather play a character gender that doesnt match ther RL one, or is actually gay and just wants to be able to marry the same sex.
Least legal support? Hmm, not aware of that, I sometimes think the Japanese are even more open-minded than some North Americans.
Good that they (SE) actually brought it up during the QA session because it is something we all can't run away from and just brush underneath the carpet. I'd say if SE did really introduce same-sex marriage in 2.0, you'd just have to live with it. Just like in real life, homosexuals cannot possibly destroy the world order just by their mere existence...
yes, please
in a game where you can play any gender, I don't see why any sex/race couldn't be married
I just want to add this is probably one issue that hits home for me specifically because I am gay. I never discuss my sexuality in game because quite frankly I am worried about the negative reactions. In my day to day life I live openly and I am very proud of who I am. I am 36 years old and I have fought and fought for equality since I was in High School. I know Square Enix and maybe some of the people playing this game dont understand how important this issue is to a gay player as you have never experienced it in your real life.
This thread is a reflection of the same struggles I avoid in game where I am very careful about revealing too much personal information. If the game is going to accept and appreciate its gay playerbase this issue shouldnt even be AN ISSUE. Its not like they ban signs of affection from gender to gender. You can use any emotive to any gender regardless of your gender, I didnt see that offending or causing any problems in the game. How many people stop to give a scolding to someone who is playing a male character give another male character a hug? Is it really that important? Furthermore the marriage ceremony and people invited would be up to the couple, other than that it wouldnt affect anyone else in the game.
To brush off my compassion about equality in and outside of the game is totally disrespectful. I find much more support for things like this than negative remarks but to see people support not allowing it based purely on outside speculation without any regard for the person playing the game paying their own monthly fee is nonsense and rubbish
I wouldn't have a problem with it but I think they would save themselves a lot of potential hassal by sticking with opposite sex only. FF XIV is a global MMO and everyone has different views on the matter. Personally I don't really see the point in in game marriage anyway. You could always just role play your own wedding if you are really that eager.
