Short answer: the void.
"dead" has always had a rather special meaning in the final fantasy franchise.
Okay, so everyone's clueless.
after the final save, anything beyond it is non cannon.
since you cant make progress, if you dont like it dont play

Just wish it happened a bit more often. Been on all evening and keep checking back to see nothing has happened. :(
Naels Aether appeared to be absorbed by Dalamud (you know, when he falls backwards after you defeat him and explodes into all that stuff that you watch float into Dalamud) - it merely appears to be a copy of him, rather than the original.
Whatever it is that is coming down with the moon, it is bringing forth all kinds of evil, and it is probably going to kill us all - notice that where ever Garleans have tread before since Dzemael Darkhold, everything they do seems to bring a trail of voidsent with them.
Whatever happened the last time they tried to pull Dalamud down destroyed an entire city in the Garlean Empire, around ten years back or so - who isn't to say that whatever powers causing it don't rip voidsent through into the world, clearly Dalamud didn't hit them last time round.
As to why they are attacking the cities, well if you haven't noticed they have been getting closer and closer patch after patch - and we still have an aetheryte crystal in each of our cities.
Also, this is 'canon', this is the reason that we are going to be sent to the future of "A Realm Reborn".
We kill a lot of things in Final Fantasy, the elemental archfiends in FF4, Evere (sp?) in ff10, Yunalesca, Seymour, and a lot others more than once after they are as per the story killed.
Anything goes! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJYs9QrUvOI
the storyline ended yesterday
now its fun time
You know those missiles in towns for foundation day... why don't they just use those???
who gives a hoot
Sadly it doesn't. If they spawned garlean troops it would tie a lot closer to the ending of the storyline that transitions into ARR much better, something you'd honestly expect. Garleans are constantly flying overhead the city, shocktroops invading is much more logical than 720 Darnus attacking.
It's the finale of the UE and we still get lore updates (and have) even after Rivenroad, so there is still some story left to be told, but so far we only get spawned monsters.
Since the servers aren't saving anymore does the reason really matter? I guess at this point we can just enjoy the game while it lasts since we're transitioning to 2.0 and everything will be different from story to everything else. Just enjoy the monsters.
It's all still Canon, Atomos is summoning all these creatures through time/space.
Just because he is dead in our world, doesn't mean he is dead in others. Atomos simply goes to a time he was still alive and copy and pastes him back to life. It explains all the monsters and Naels that attack the city.
Its just as possible Atomos has nothing to do with any of this and is simply interested in harvesting the aetherytes for his own reasons(or whatever it is that he is doing to them), the voidsent creeping through the cracks that process creates. After all theres nothing really giving him a motive to create Nael van darnus' to attack Uldah since he's been going about his business pretty much unfased this entire time he didnt set out to attack adventurer's only ones that are a threat to his continued feasting(or whatever).
Far more likely the entity causing the current attacks is related to Dalamud itself since not only voidscent and Nael van darnus' are attacking but also monsters of all kinds when by all accounts they should be fleeing. Either monsters are being possessed by some sinister evil or they are being attracted to Dalamud which Uldah happens to be in the path of. As was said earlier Nael's essence was seen entering Dalamud so its not so far fetched that Dalamud is related to the sudden appearance of Nael clones.
It's similar story to how Atomos was following Ex-Death.
FF5- Atomos
FF6- The World is going to be destroyed and remade.
FF7- They using Dalamud as Meteor
FF8- Time Compression, to us the player only.
Atomos confuses me, cause you figure at one point in time Aetheryte energy would be the most abundant, yet he comes to our time where it is the least. The unanswered question is why.
It is a mystery, but perhaps its not the aetheryte energy which he desires but the lack of it? if that makes any sense at all. Like maybe a byproduct of aetheryte energy having been spent. In which case it would be buffet time for him. Or for some reason Atomos is tampering with the aetherytes in preparation of Dalamud or the contents within. Landing lights maybe? =P
I personally think that Atomos isn't completely devouring the aether at each node, more-so temporarily taking it so that it can re-insert it after Dalamud hits (maybe trying to avoid the risk of it being destroyed?). It would sort of explain why the nodes we have now are gonna be completely different to the ones we have in 2.0. Iunno, that's just me theorising. Who knows what the truth is at the moment
My big hope in all of this is that we get attacked by an army of inanimate objects, like barrels or something. A legion of barrels slowly approach out of the horizon and storm Ul'dah, destroying all in their wake with high powered attacks like "Being A Barrel"
lol, would love to see mime / chest-trap type enemies.
On reply to previous posts;
Maybe Atomos and Dalamud is connected somehow, Atomos being able to produce / Copy a being of Dalamud's essence.
or maybe this is just like FFVII where Atomos is trying to drain all Aether energy because he sensed "Dalamud" awakening which triggered the end of an era, therefore Atomos trying to kill and absorb everything then dissapears to the void for awhile with everyone's aether with him, after the cataclysm he would then return and re-spread the Aether all around Eorzea ?
It all comes down to some questions which we do not know the answer to;
What is Dalamud ? What were the Allagan Empire ? What is the purpose of Atomos ? Who are the Twelve? and What is the 7th Umbral Era ? (the 6th was said to be the last) well, there might be more, but I might've forgot.
Then again, our world is small, this is only Eorzea, not even Hydaelyn, not even the 3-4 other continents, not even all the other islands around the planet and that's just the "known" area 0.0 What about the known unknowns and unknown unknowns, etc :p
This patch has ruined all the fun of this event. "Powerful but killable" was fun to deal with. "Ten minutes in and we've removed 5% of its health" is not. I think this vanguard we were killing just got bored and committed suicide because all 100 of us were killing it too slow. It just died at 90% HP. Square, you seem to have seriously overestimated the number of people who have stuck around. 4 level 90+ centuirons and a nael are not funny.
If you finished the final mission Living on a prayer we are suppose to fight off the Garleen's til that old elzen man finishes his
spell casting to send us to future.
Atomos is the devourer of realities. He doesn't much care about sending things from one world to another, though his coming seems to open rifts between realities which some creatures are capable of punching through. Atomos is probably just here for a meal.
That's my take on it, anyways.
When Nael died he was sort of absorbed by Dalamud, maybe now that Dalamud is so close Atomos can summon him from Dalamud? Just a shot in the dark.
