Nobody uses this crap, why it is still in the game?
excelent fillers for transmutation... so yes they got a use.
didn't we have some problems with everything losing their identity and everything feeling same?
Excuse you, I stock my healer full of piety to make sure I don't run out of MP while I'm spamming physick.
Piety and tenacity don't provide any noticeable or tangible effect, and no one wants them on any of their gear. The only substats that can be felt are skill and spell speed, and only on certain jobs at specific breakpoints. In their current form, substats could be removed entirely, the base crit/dhit/det could be raised by a static amount, and nothing would change.
some of that materia you can sell for 18-20k a piece and during the right seasons up to 5-7 times more that value.
Putting a worthless materia into the transmutation also prevents you from getting the yellow ones again.
Please understand and take it to the next step.
"Wish granted"
A finger on the monkey's paw curls
"All tanks now have a trait that gives them a free extra 25% damage reduction"
true lets remove materia completely. its annoying anyway and it allows for way too many mistakes.
also other people make more money with that than me, better we delete it.
I sell it to the domans for a premium price, they like garbage.
I'd rather they design the game such that those materia are useful.
At least they assign materia a color to indicate its usefulness. It's so easy to just keep red materia and throw everything else out without reading the names.
They should just combine Direct Hit, Tenacity, and Piety into a single yellow materia whose effects depend on what role you are so we don't have three different types. While we're at it, combine Spell Speed and Skill Speed.
It is unironically how the devs design systems in the game and have for a very long time. They attribute scales of power to everything, and a clear hierarchy of power between multiple options (just see how they do balance jobs for the most egregious example).
Then they do proceed to design catch up mechanics to ensure that those shitty options still get a use, here in the case of materia, it's the recycling bin.
It's pretty wild to design around things that are meant to be doomed from the start, when you think about it.
I mean if tanks use critical hit, determination and direct hit, then what's the point of tenacity and stuff? Just dragging you down because of how they developed this game.
But yes only use is what others said, for transmutation. Nothing else.
SE: “we want to make a simple, easy to understand game that can be picked up by anyone”
Also SE: *creates substats that are basically just noob traps, whose existence serves only to punish you for not melding crit or DHR* lol
…like, how the hell is having two (mostly) useless substats ‘easy’ and ‘streamlined’? Isn’t that the literal definition of ‘unnecessary (illusions of) complexity’? Ffs SE
Stats - especially melding customization - is in need of an overhaul, period.
Right now, materia feels like more an economical feature rather than a pve-gameplay one.
You meld materia only to achieve certain number goals. Ever wondered why it's always something like "crit>det>dh"? In the end, melding feels like an expensive chore.
And the stats themselves are boring.
- Direct Hit feels like the ugly Crit cousin.
- Piety is meaningless now with healers having so many MP-free answers to the encounter damage.
- Sks/SpS both feel bad due to how drifting negatively affects the dominance of the 2min meta - it's ironic how the stat that you can feel the most in your gameplay is the least favored one. IIRC only BLM can have a real choice with this stat, and I'm not even sure where it stands after the last rework.
- Tenacity is just a sprout trap.
They need to merge redundant stats, delete DH, and create new and mealdable utility stats to promote some choice. I don't think Speed will ever be a good choice with the 2min meta dominating the group play - unless they change more jobs to be less burst oriented like BLM.
I wish I could use any material with the only limits being slots. There has been many times I would have melded vit or defense stats on my WHM to survive early prog mechanics. This would allow for more creative mechanics.
So, it has "a use"... as a way to get something worse so that you can then bloat your inventory with those worse things to go somewhere specific to then have a chance to turn the worse / bloat items into a worthwhile item you'd otherwise have had automatically if the bloat items did not exist?
Granted we could say the same for all melding. With GCD tiers neutered through increasing removal of duration-based buffs and debuffs, there is virtually no meaningful customization available through it. It's almost purely a gil sink.
All they would have to do is to make enemies and bosses hit a ton more harder and fix tenacity's scaling that it would be a must have stat for damage reduction. While for piety they could just increase the MP costs of spells while putting little piety on gear to get players to use more piety materia.
The should nerf passive mp recovery so that piety is more useful.
Unless abilities begin to cost MP, then you just end up with either no effect or even GCD heals requiring identically scheduling even for PuGs...
I'm not sure that makes any more sense than slowing the GCD to 3 seconds so that the %global-recast-time-reduction of SkS/SpS is more potent or would be necessary to return to old syncable GCD tiers. The main Piety problem lies elsewhere.
Speed, Power, Break?
Speed = Skill Speed + Spell Speed
Power = Det, and Piety for healers and Tenacity for Tanks
Break = Crit
Tbh, though, an equally large waste just comes in the form of having multiple grades of materia, or materia as items at all instead of a granular currency you can insert whatever amount of up to the given gear's cap. Just grab and move the sliders for the three colors, drawing from your total of each materia currency collected.
How about they make materia actually interesting.
At least Tenacity does some good, but not enough to slot into gear...
Piety is so bad that Healers actively try to avoid it because it eats at other stats.
