Yes yes I know "Nightmare" and all that, but with people craving old school MMO's nowadays, would it be such a bad thing to release a new 1.23b server nowadays?

A streamlined re-release of 1.xx MSQ in the game would be pretty neat, because the story is still canon.
But if people are craving the old-school MMO experience, they're better off jumping into EQ1&2, FFXI, and WoW Classic.
why not
heard current day games are so unsavoury people would rather play +5yo games that what today has to offer
I would play that instead of what we currently have. We do need a modern MMO in that style.
I've seen the gameplay of 1.0 and I'm not really interested.
The fact people are eyeing it at all speaks volumes of how bad gameplay has gotten now.
All Ive heard of the gameplay and everything that its ass. People want GOOD oldschool mmos. Not shit ones
I would give a 1.23b rerun a chance. Probably not enough to get a relic or do rivenroad but it would be interesting to directly compare with xi and current xiv. Supposedly the code is preserved if not the servers so it might be possible if not practical.
Yes. FFXIV 1.0 isn't "old school," it's just bad. Its an awful, terrible game. That server would be good for about five minutes of "wow this is horrendous" before you log out and never touch it again, which is why they'll never do it. If you want to play an old school MMO then try FFXI, Classic WoW, EQ, etc.
Some ideas in it were alright but a lot of the implementation was poor so it wouldn't really work.
Nope. There's already FFXI if you want an oldschool final fantasy MMO experience.
WoW Classic and OSRS only work because there's nostalgia for those times in the game's life. I'm not sure how many people are nostalgic for 1.0 but it can't be that many, with people being hesitant to even want ARR/HW classic, let alone 1.0!
It's too outdated in interface and graphics terms. But heck if that got a remaster a lot of people would be all over that.
It's also not like SE doesn't know or believe in it either, after all they greenlit a mobile remake. They just need to do it inhouse or find a better team.
As someone who actually played 1.x. It was not the game you're imagining. It looks like the game you know, but it played terribly. Even moving your character felt bad. Sure characters animated better, because they had animations for starting to move and coming to stop, but that animation "momentum" made your character feel like they were constantly moving through syrup with baked in input lag
It would have to be rebuilt from the ground up with more than a few changes to make it baseline playable, and if they did that people would complain that it wasn't REALLY 1.x and surely that if they got the original exactly as it was then that the experience would be improved (it wouldn't)
I would maybe play it, but not sure I could last more than the 30 minutes I did when I tried it the first time.
It'd still be pretty terrible, yes. Its combat was auto-attacks until you can afford the beginning of Combo 1, doing Combo 1, auto-attacking until you could afford the beginning of Combo 2, doing Combo 2, rinse and repeat for so long as you could do each combo (since each skill had its own, increasing cooldown atop the required prior auto-attacks).
It'd be like Dragoon if 75% of your kit were just the two ST combos and they were only 2-3 skills long each. We had more gameplay by level 30 of ARR than by level 50 of 1.23.
...This is coming from someone who nonetheless thought 1.x worth leveling 4 classes in, so trust me when I say that combat will not remotely be an improvement. The zones were pretty neat to explore the first time through each, and the pre-Yoshida customization even had some promise even if only terrible execution, but it was overall a clunky slog that didn't really even feel any more "soulful" than XIV today, let alone ARR/HW.
I'd rather have a progression server that went through ARR-Stormblood.
There's a reason why FF11 is still around and FF14 nearly killed Square Enix.
While both feature slower style combat, FF14 1.0 had many issues that made it awful to play. The interface was laggy, bugs were numerous, it actively worked against you to limit your play. Also there was almost no story.
FF11 is a far more complete experience, and it being one of the earliest MMORPGs to come out in the west adds a lot to the nostalgia factor.
Nah, it doesn't really say anything. Heck, the calls for WoW "Classic" started during WotLK, which was its most successful expansion of all time. People have a natural tendency toward nostalgia. I'd even be curious how many people "asking" about it even played back then and have any clue what it was actually like...
I would probably try a 1.0 classic server to see what it was like since I never had a chance to play it. But from what I seen of it I think I would prefer sticking to ff11 and old school runescape for the classic mmo experience.
How would they fund it? A separate subscription? Some free-to-play experience inundated with microtransactions? They would have to find a way to make something like that financially feasible to maintain. The mobile version is free-to-play with what appear to be pretty widespread microtransactions.
I don't think they are missing the MMO in itself but something my ore simple.
challenge uniqueness and better story.
today healers are barely needed everything is around DPS check and body check. SE removed all unique skills of all job to make them more accessible but all fight became a puzzles remember and you will be fine.body check and DPS check are the only that technically kills run today it is rarely a tank lb or a heal check. the game lack real challenge lack unique jobs I count all content in this.
Like chaotic raid is a boss fight that will at one point add two other boss but! only cloud of darkness and is filled with body check being rather insane. Yet the crystal tower doesn't only have cloud of darkness it is also Xander Amon Cerberus like chaotic isn't a alliance raid in the slightest just a bigger savage it was also supposed to be a transition for people to go in and then go savage yet it did so poorly that only savage raider and ultimate player could really do it with how insane the body check are. I aren't casual but due to my play time this is impossible for me I did it in week one saw .3 once and never again! it was so intense that after the first few weeks the content was dead and when people run it. it was during the time I sleep so the armor the mount and everything is lock because I will have to sacrifice my sleep to enter it.
so people are craving really the old MMO but the old mechanic and feel of those
I would love to experience the story and world of 1.0, but I would not touch the gameplay with a 10km long stick. I don't understand why people would want something so horrible, it's not even "its just old" it looked clunky af even for its time and badly designed
