Ty SE for BLM changes!

Hello fellow wizards! I just wanted to chime in as a new Black Mage player (as of 7.2), I am very happy with the changes. I tried black mage a few times this expansion and I just COULD NOT keep up my enochian timer or manage these procs. I'm so glad that SE has finally listened to the players and made the job more accessible and EVEN MAKING IT STRONGER (Take that artist mains). I know they nerfed leylines to 20s, but honestly it doesn't seem too bad because you never really got the full duration of it anyway (damn aoe mechanics)

I always used to default to spamming the Ice combos because I kept running out of mana using the fire combos for some reason, so I still have a ways to go before I master all the elements, but I'm super excited to see one of my favorite jobs getting the love it deserves. How do you all feel about these changes? :)

While I'm not personally thrilled with the changes, specifically to remove the timers, I am glad that you're happy with them. Happy playing, and I wish you the best of luck on your black mage adventure!

Maybe just play one of the other 3 mage jobs so that people who want something a tiny bit more complex could play black mage... wild Idea I know.

I play BLM since SB and I love the job. But being chased by the timer became more and more exhausting. I know it's mostly psychological, but now playing BLM will be much more relaxed without the timer.
Also doing Deep Dungeons, grinding crafting mats in the overworld, running content unsynched, doing Fates... everything other than an instanced boss fight feels like a chore on BLM.

I was playing BLM the last week (like some others were that I met while doing it), and the movement challenge was sometimes fun, and sometimes annoying (but really, that's just learning the fight as a BLM). But sometimes I'd get ARR content (including Shiva Extreme) and the ARR rotation already allows lots of movement. So in a way, these changes are bringing BLM back to its ARR roots of being able to move.

But ARR was a long time ago and its whole identity has long been that it has to work around this conundrum. I think that rather than a lot of people maining BLM, it was just something people played sometimes to challenge themselves and that's fine really because there are a lot of jobs in the game now. But it makes all those of us who only played it occasionally feel bad for those who did main it.

Whilst my view here is liable to be unpopular, I'm going to say it anyway.

This change has made me curious about playing BLM. I tried Thaumaturge, briefly, back when I started playing the game. I hated it. I won't go into why as it doesn't really matter, but the fact is I haven't looked at it since that time - but I may take another look at it with these changes implemented.

BLM was far from immobile, its mobility just required a bit of pre-planning and saving up tools in preparation. Like, I thought it was possible to do 14 GCDs in a row of mobility (25ish seconds), but I then got corrected by someone who knows BLM more than me, who says it was possible in 7.1 to bank up to about 55s of pure movement.

If anything, it's RDM that is the 'immobile' caster, and has been for a while

This is my hypothesis: "new and improved encounter design" just means "Faster", BLM too slow for new design, therefore BLM need fix. This is fix. Yay.

Is it just not possible for people to accept and admit to themselves that something just might not be for them? That is not unexpected.

Most likely, all the existing BLMs will either switch job or quit the game (if they didn't already do one of these things).

But they will likely be replaced by a lot of people trying out the casual version of BLM. And the rates of people playing BLM will likely get higher than they have ever been (it's always been one of the least used jobs statistically as far as I can see).

Obviously, SE knows that. And Yoshi-P knows the meaning of these changes to people because he mains the job. The only reason it probably took this long was because he had to come to terms with reworking his own job.

So, he's willing to literally throw away one paying customer to make another one, who is already paying by the way, try out a different job. Not even make it their new main... just TRY it. And they'll inevitably just go back to whatever it was they were using as their main when they realize it's still too much trouble for them, over braindead SMN or PCT.

By my math, that's a net loss of one player. Good thinking, I see now why he's the God of Videogames.

Nah, most people will stick with it, it's just the squeaky wheels here that might quit playing it.

And I don't think any of these changes will draw people in, only minmaxers are going to feel any difference in play. Us goobers that don't like playing BLM already aren't going to notice a difference.

But, by the same token, does the fact that I'm considering trying a job that I was, four years ago, not interested in change anything or are we all supposed to boycott this change in the hopes that YoshiP will rewind it? I mean, that hasn't worked in the case of SAM's Kaiten so far.

Which brings me back to the question I keep asking myself: For whom are these changes being made?

Is it for the people who have no interest in playing it, the "goobers who don't like playing BLM"? If so, will that actually draw an appreciable increase in the population of BLM players? Has designing jobs around the people who don't care about them actually drawn them in in the past?

Is it for the min/maxers who have obtained mastery of - and love for - BLM as it already existed? If so, how many will stay on BLM as opposed to those who will switch to something else or - in some cases - outright quit the game over these changes?

Is it for the people in between those extremes like myself, who mostly leveled BLM because I'm a completionist who wants to get all my jobs leveled? Because from my perspective, I grew to love BLM and derived joy from gaining a strong degree of mastery over the job.

Is it for the people who will play savage? If so, how will that affect how non-savage content feels to play?

Or is it for some new purpose? Are they preparing for the 8.0 rework, and is the plan to, instead of "restore" job identity, rather give jobs new identities? Is the new identity no longer "turret mage" but "explody boom boom mage?"

I don't know, and I don't pretend to know the answers to all these questions. I'm just confused.

When people were complaining about Pictomancer. I still remember the discussions because my reaction at the time was.

Just Buff all the other Jobs, or Reduce Pictomancers potency and increase everyone elses

I was told at the time. It wasn't just about the potency but the fact Pictomancer could do so much more damage while on the move and the buff.

Player participation in Ultimates the 'ultimate' form of skill expression had the lowest participation of Black Mage ever.

I saw threads where people were saying they were not being invited to groups as a caster if they were NOT picto - A First of its kind

Up till now the consensus for the game was it's so balanced you could bring whatever you wanted. But Picto was so objectively better, not just because of damage but because of it's free movement... Why would you bring anything else and the numbers reflected that.
People TALKED about that.
People were upset they weren't invited.
People talked about more than a potency change was necessary.

So isn't this the proper change? Isn't this a huge buff for Black Mages so they can play the game?

I know nothing about Black Mages and I admit it. BUT the past threads about pictomancer don't lie. The past threads about Black Mage participation being low doesn't lie.
So they nerfed Pictomancer a bit and greatly buffed Black Mage.

Like I even empathize with 'job fantasy' but your job fantasy was ostracizing you from playing your favorite job in the highest end content. If the design for fights gets even harder as they no doubt will...

Picto was brought on raids because of their damage. That's it. Not their movement.

BLM was not greatly buffed. It's roughly a 1% buff, but -100% fun for most BLM players. The job has no identity now. If people wanted to play a caster with nearly no cast times, they'd play Summoner.

BLM was my “to go” cast since ARR until RDM came out (purely because I love rapier)

Always have a mix feeling about Enochian. I like it when I know about the fight and push to the last second, and I dislike it sudden lag spike or just other players less then ideal positioning end up punishing myself. Since the release of Picto I will never going to main BLM for my “choice of Caster” anyway. However, with the change I am likely to try it on different content more.

some veteran blm main will be unhappy and move onto different job or quit, and some players will try playing blm as of the change. Either way it is what it is now.

It's not the squeaky wheels here. Literally I met lots of people in the game itself the last week that are sad at the changes. I met them in dungeons, PUGs I was in, chat spaces in the game, and any Black Mage mains I've known in the past valued the way it was because planning their movement was the whole point for them.

The reason I believe it will draw people in, is because of what I see in ARR. I see lots of new players pick up Thaumaturge and become a Black Mage. But I do not continue to see them using Black Mage when they reach level 60, and the reason is obvious.

Now that it's changed, those new players will likely continue using it, and that's why I think we will see more of them now.

so... there are three relatively easy casters. one very easy, one one the support side and one heavily on the dmg side.... but there cant be that one difficult caster?

i dont get it xD

Well no they played Pictomancer.

You still need to stay put but a lot of the cast times were reduced by 1 second... they're just making it less punishing because when it came to high-skill expression... people were rather to exclude a black mage than invite them.

That's not fair to the black mage players. You say if people wanted to play a caster... but people weren't playing Black Mage. There was a whole huge thread about it.

This is the part I don't understand. Like... is it reeeeaaally a big deal to make it a bit easier? I mean - it's not like what they did to Summoner now that you bring up Summoner.

Summoner had the most complex rotation in the game with three dots to keep up. Now it's a fischer price toy... it's like that scene from Hannibal where Lector made the FBI agent eat his own brain.
In comparison... this feels more like they were helping black mage players out. (A bit - just a bit)

Like the meme was always Black Mages don't move... I guess I never realized Black Mages REALLY don't want to move. It's like trying to get a cat to move off a thing you're working on and they start doing aggressive meows and hissing. D:

I won't hate your opinions on this, but I do feel they took feedback from the people who play blm on occasion not actual blm players. The core audience of blm is not happy with these changes. I personally won't be playing it until 8.0 to see how they address the major changes, but maybe a new audience will come in and main blm to keep it alive.

Fights don't need to be designed around blm, they already have 12 instant casts, 13 if you count scathe. You just need more planning and fight understanding to play blm efficiently.

Picto was brought because it offers raid wide buff and has way more damage than black mage. There was just no justification for having a black mage when Pictomancer did everything just better. Every FRU party locked the caster slot to picto. It was just how it is.

I remember in Stormblood BLM and SAM was not welcomed in PFs or groups as the META of buff jobs was just too good to outweigh BLM/SAMs raw damage. It actually almost made me quit the game as BLM was so unwelcomed until they changed their damage. But this is something they cannot fix. They could make BLM several times more OP in damage to PCT but when a Job is hollow and unrewarding to play, then theres no point in playing it at all

Completely butchering a job is never a right call.

At the time, the reason why PCT was almost always picked over BLM was because PCT was objectively better in every aspects compared to BLM. It plays better too; it has the flexibility that pre-DT BLM has.
If they wanted to help current BLM players, what they could do is simply nerf PCT appropriately. Makes it so that BLM still have reasons to be played in high end contents. But they refused to do that, probably because they didn't have enough data to justify pissing the PCT player base.

So what happened in 7.2? They finally admits that PCT was simply too overpowered and they nerfed it a lot. But in the process, they also changed BLM significantly that it's essentially a different job altogether. It's marginally buffed at best, and there's nothing in the new BLM that resembles the old BLM aside from visuals. The challenge of the job is now gone. I don't think any of the old BLM players will enjoy this. Not sure who they're 'helping' with this changes to be honest.

Obviously, SE knows that. And Yoshi-P knows the meaning of these changes to people because he mains the job. The only reason it probably took this long was because he had to come to terms with reworking his own job.

These aren't "new" players, they are existing players that just didn't like the job before. And sure, they may try it out but do they actually continue to play it? And that's what you killed it's old playerbase for?
A potential net loss of a subscription just to shuffle some people from Summoner or Picto into Black Mage, most likely not even permanently.

Again my ignorance on Black Mage is what has me confused as an outsider looking in.

I think they were trying to do the changes people were asking for because it seems to be liberating limitations that otherwise held the Job back. I think 2 seconds is still a long cast time. . .
But maybe it have been better just to reduce all cast times by .2 seconds instead... Does that sound better?

Anyways as I know I don't know much about Black Mages this will be all I'll say about it.
I'll Leave you guys to it I'm out of my depth and I just don't understand since I didn't live the black mage life.

They've officially ruined the magic archetype for me. Healers are boring arse trash, SMN is braindead, PCT's motifs are boring, and RDM being half melee isn't my thing. The only "true" caster left was BLM and now that has been lobotomized.

Personally I think they should have kept the playstyle and just gave them really high potentcy on a few skills. The BLM who takes forever to cast but then does 9999 damage (or the XIV equivalent) was my favorite part of the fantasy.

Same with summoner that also doesn't really cast anymore.
