Got in, had a 400+ queue, got booted, got back in and shortly thereafter got booted again. Queue was over 1100. Those in duty before we disbanded said all of NA got hit.
Can we try and mitigate this somehow?
yeah, and the server status always says they 're fine - made it to below 100 in que then 2002 and back to 1200 :/
The curse of DDOS attacks.
This has been way too common lately.
Not a whole lot you can do against DDOS when you run a service that is, by design, DDOS-vulnerable.
...throttle packets and everyone lags with 1k+ pings
...limit connections and you have a 100k queue
...turn up the aggressive of 'packet spam' block and everyone gets random DCs because their client hit the threshold while in a fight
Yep. In the middle of M3S and booted. 293 queue at first. Get back in, pop afk for a bio while we wait for 2 more and booted again. 931 queue that time. I'm back in again but just replenishing pots until I see if things are stable or not.
LMAO a DT S rank spawned on my world during the outage, and it took almost 20 minutes to kill with how few players were able to get to it.
Honestly unless SE somehow finds the sources used and starts following back to the source and either blocking or threatening legal action nothing is going to happen - problem is most these DDOS are botnets and generally not a simple or effective measure to track.
I really can't see it being too hard to separate connections requesting log-in from those already on worlds, they should only have to add a server handoff into that process and then have the firewall drop any direct connection attempts. That way at worst an attacker would be able to overwhelm the log-in side and people already playing the game would never know.
They go out of their way to do so. They are fighting it constantly and they contact ISPs to help them setup countermeasures, since the nearby nodes that don't even belong to SE are what usually get attacked (a dirty tactic by the attackers, because everyone blames SE for it when it's not even SE being attacked technically).
1mil gil says Blizzard with their expan around the corner.
Wuk Lamat has gained sentience and consumes all server resources now like sky net
I mean who is shocked. Everytime I have to go through the mogstation I remember that XIV has the worst technical aspects of any MMO.
The problem is keep alive is a thing and it ultimately all comes through the same pipe - your connection is optimized in real-time so its not so much that once your in that your just handed off to the infrastructure; so these DDOS work more like a stroke vs a heart attack. interrupting that flow causing you to drop because you also lose the keepalive connection. Otherwise you'd double up the servers so that once you are handed off the node would need a 2nd ingress for every player. Its a good thought but the problem is these DDOS are likely not direct connect attempts and are from the looks of things interrupting traffic upstream; quite likely at a node outside of SE's control.
Steam is also getting hammered by something atm.
The more I play it, the more it feels like this is the grandfather of all MMOs in everything but combat instances. I mean, it's a AAA MMO with arguably the worst questing and exploration in the market. Effing Tibia, RuneScape and EverQuest somehow have a more interesting world to explore than the SE "masterpiece". XIV's maps are just pretty backdrops empty of anything but enemies and aether currents that only exist to extend the already inhumanely long MSQ by making you walk to the edge of the map to interact with a shiny spot and make you go back.
It was just strange how my FC mate in savage had no issues during this attack and everyone around them seemed to be having issues. I asked if they got booted the first time I did and they did not. On the second boot, they remained in game as well.
The whole situation kind of just spoiled my night as I was afraid of being booted again in a duty. By time I was sure that it was over, it was getting late. Nothing I can do, but general plans went out the window. Weekends are the best time for me to do lots of stuff in game. C’est la vie I guess.
and what exactly do you expect them to do, this didnt effect eu or jp, theyre not going to refund you, and solving this issue takes a lot of time.
I'd argue against this considering there's multiple instances of open world NPC's with useful easter egg dialogue from a lore perspective, same goes with FATE's adding to lore descriptions for various monsters and their interactions with the world, some being more important/relevant in later expansions. Few examples:
- ARR zones especially has a lot of NSFW undertones inside of content as well as NPC dialogues that are not part of cutscenes, but dialogue stated under certain triggers or in open world. This includes Momodi having special dialogue about her nsfw interests happening only with female characters, lalafell nsfw relationships with other races such as Costa Del Sol open world, human trafficking lore such Satasha cave tunnels that aren't forced dialogue/pathways, Limsa NPC's with r*pe & mutilation concepts.
- Early lalafell discussion arguing whether or not they were children was actually decisively broken by a monster's description in a FATE stating that it ate lalafellen children.
- ARR side mission dungeon had a Blessed being inside of it that was referenced in Dawntrail.
- Dawntrail fate's include lore such as:
"For countless generations, Shaaloani grandmothers have told tales of a Namazu elemental─the Outjaw─who could sense the lies of wicked children with their whiskers, and would come in the night to swallow whole those who told the most untruths. As it would turn out, there was truth in those tales."
"Hearing the prayers of pilgrims, a deity has descended─albeit a false one from the Tower of Zot. This pretender to the name of Daivadipa must be consigned to the aether whence it came."
*various threats toward farmers, traders and their income, medical field practices* such as:
"If a moth flaps its wings in the forest, and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Possibly, but it does release a toxic cloud of countless tiny scales that can linger in the air for days killing both flora and fauna alike, so it's best not to let the moth flap its wings at all."
*various invading races*
"Although some might argue that tax collection is a greater affront than banditry, brigands impersonating tax collectors are undoubtedly the worst of both worlds. Ensure that no more fall prey to the roaming gang's guile, and force them to pay the ultimate price."
*various creatures that impact structure integrity or soil quality*
