With the announcement of the FFXIV mobile app, the poor MSQ decisions and other bad decisions around class changes (there is also a lot of criticism about difficulty levels either being too easy or too difficult across encounters).. I started wondering if Square executives are forcing their decisions into the game while YoshiP is becoming more of a figurehead.
Maybe the game is getting too big for him to oversee things or is the company telling him what he has to put into the game.
If he is making all these decisions, I'd want to ask how and why.
Is YoshiP still in charge or is corporate taking over?

Well they put him in charge of FF 16 and that ended up eating a lot of time and attention from 14.
But if the corporate had taken over, we'd have FFXIV NFTs now. -

Aren’t CBU3 working on a new IP? I bet it’s an ff16 situation again where all their good developers have been moved to the new IP and they’ve just left a skeleton crew to keep up appearances that they’re still working on XIV.

YoshiP was de facto moved to the boss of whole CS3 (formerly CBU3). While it's certainly a good move for SE as a whole, the immediate downside is that he has no longer as much time to spend on FFXIV and instead must oversee a lot of corporate matters that have nothing to do with the game.
Therefore, he probably had to delegate a lot of stuff he did in FFXIV and in particular, he no longer has the time to play the game thoroughly (like he confessed doing with SHB). From that point on, mess is inevitable because it's now younger people doing it and... well, you know the rest. -

The terrible job changes really started to sink in in shadowbringers, with some as far back as SB, and it's only gone downwards from there for most, so it's nothing new. Soon it'll be a visual novel only. Of course there's always the corporate stuff, but it's very much yoship's decisions and/or say.

Yoshi-P himself said the main class changes will come later (7.2-8.0). So I don't know what you mean about the class changes. Come back again in 2 years to judge the decisions. For now they are obviously on "stand by"and he explained that they focus first on fight designs.
Mobile app is not announced at all. Just a rumor. And Yoshida said multiple times he would like everyone to be able to play the game without having to rely on a specific device. That's also why we got an Xbox version. Although who knows if that mobile app will see the light of day...
And everything about the MSQ and the difficulty is all subjective. If they don't try to change things up a bit they get equally criticized. -

I wouldn't be surprised, though I do believe if he left completely we'd be royally screwed because he's in a way shielding us from the shit that SE might have in store. I'm still puzzled by their decisions in EW and I've been watching from the sidelines wondering if they want to run it to the ground. I lost faith in the writing but I believed in the 'devs', but they really messed up this graphical update. I'd like to be able to play the game minus the eyestrain. Why am I getting microstutter in alliance raid despite passing the recommended specs....amogst other things.
Guess we'll wait and see how they handle this. I remain disappointed honestly... -

I think the lack of QoL improvements and most importantly: still being in the Heavensward launch formula (which was lackluster in 2013) is the problem more than anything else with Dawntrail. There's a real lack of passion from the director is on display when the game is screaming for reiteration. -

Yoshida is not as directly involved as he used to. He's in charge of the entirety of Creative Studio 3, who are working on 2 projects unrelated to Final Fantasy XIV.

I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even get to play much of Dawntrail at all before it released. He's not in the same position he was five years ago and doesn't have time to personally review games and give his feedback anymore.
Square execs see that CBU3 or CS3 or whatever it is now is the team that made their cash cow, but rather than invest back into it, they just pick off senior staff member to go work on other projects expecting another masterpiece, because they're business execs who have no idea how artistry works, and we're seeing the results now. -

For the MSQ I could see it's poor quality being due to FFXVI since they start writing the next expansion properly around the launch of the current expansion. I haven't played FFXVI yet due to no pc release however from what I've heard it seems very Heavensward-esque in tone so I wouldn't be surprised if the main writers for the HW-ShB era of XIV weren't available for EW and DT so we got less experienced writers with at most an outline from the main writers.
As for the job changes, yeah 90-100 is terrible but this is less of the fault of new blood and more of the fault of the old bloods fear of experimenting anymore. ARR and HW had the best most interesting job design and it was unbalanced and had a lot of people arguing. Stuff like Dark Arts on DRK was such an interesting system for a tank that it has had people still divided on it and talking about it 9 years later, cleric stance as well and the old job identies such as the WoW warlock Summoner and support melee DPS Ninja.
However these systems did divide the player base and had constant back and forth pull of people really hating jobs while others really loving them, people used to view FFXIV healers as some of the most engaging healers ever in an MMO because of how much of a balance between DPS and healing there was. But this led to healer being hard to approach, tanks all had stance dancing which made tanks hard to approach.
All these engaging systems were culled for homogenisation and simpler more approachable design and a more balanced game (though not completely.)
It started in SB was completely shoved into our face in ShB and has been reinforced in EW and DT. It attracted new conflict now, new players who prefer the homogenised style vs old guard who prefer old job design.
CBU3 is scared of displeasing the new players and are afraid of having ARR & HW balance. 90-100 all being traits confirm this, they want jobs to feel the same as SHB/EW because they're afraid of dividing people again by completely changing a job outside of a rework. -

YoshiP said it many many times. Their feature planning is all based on profitability. They won't redo Crystal Tower just because they can, they will do it when it's super necessary (they have to add trust because DF died or something like that) or when it will lead to sales (new expansion, new zone graphics, new music, savage/ultimate for the addicts). They added some new pretty animations for jobs and that's what is expected in the sale package of a new expansion. Wherever someone "likes" new Astro or other new buttons is irrelevant if the expansion has already been bought. Plot watchers are there for a month everyone else is addicted and will sub back and forth.
I wouldn't be surprised if the next expansion will be exactly the same as the last 3 - we go to 110, there are job group quests, there are DoH/DoL job group quests, more emphasis on more proactive MSQ, more emphasis on extra changes to job skill animations, healer strike addressed by changing glare animation with pianos dropping on top of mobs and screen shakes. Me and my mates are playing GW2 now. The game where you can participate in the other's MSQ, starting zones can potentially kill you, and you get to customise your class in terms of abilities.
XIV at this point is just a visual novel and the rest got deleted for ease of access or a better parse. -

But I don't know how a smaller and more financially limited studio like Anet, and especially under the wing of such a crap company like Nexon has managed to do more with the game than a big company like SE in a decade. This is further exacerbated when you take into consideration that Anet is infamous for being disorganized and having an almost chaotic approach to game design, where they have these big ideas integrated into the game without regards to future proofing and then get gutted or abandoned (Living Story, Dungeons, Raids, Hunts, Guilds, Competitive PvP, WvW... The list goes on), yet the core gameplay is solid enough that despite this, people still but the expansions.Quote:
